stayed one night at this hotel. Initially it didn't start well as the room we were given was dark and damp smelling and a bit like a dungeon. After a quick chat to the front desk we were moved to a bigger upstairs room .
Beds are ok. Room had a tv but no fridge. Breakfast was good.
I would recomend this hotel.

Located just two blocks from the main square in Merida, this hotel is a real oasis right in the heart of the city. Once you step in the front gate, you'll be welcomed with the lovely courtyard and friendly staff. Although it wasn't of luxury (can't argue with the reasonable price), the room had plenty of space and nice antique decor. Rooms on upper floor might be a better choice, as the ones on lower floors seemed a little dark. Breakfast on the terrace of the restaurant was a refreshing way to start the day, and the food was good too. We booked at the hotel a half-day tour to Uxmal that included dinner and the sound&light show, which was very much enjoyable. The good thing about booking tours at the hotel is, you don't have to worry when the pick-up is late (which they tend to very often, as it's the transportation is shared with other tourists) and no misunderstanding of the address, even if you don't speak well the local language!

A charming hotel 2 blocks away from the main square yet quiet, clean, cool, tranquil and quaint, an oasis of calm in a buzzing little Mexican town. Within easy walking distance to all main attractions. Perhaps not for those who like shiny new and plastic

The staff were very helpful and it was a pleasure to eat in the little restaurant in the night as the quaint features of the hotel are enhanced by tasteful illuminations. Great for a weekend in a town which provides free open air entertainment on Saturdays and Sundays.

I stayed at Fray Diego while on a short business trip. Since we were only in Merida one night, and I love Mexican culture and history, this charming little hotel fit perfectly. It's close to the historic old town square and offers wonderful public courtyard space where we were able to relax after a long day of work. If it weren't for the traffic sounds outside the courtyard, I would have thought that I had escaped the city entirely. The Mision de Fray Diego is a great find and reasonably price too.

Just back from Merida, 5 days away w/ husband. In all honesty, La Luz was my first choice-they were full. Meant to check it out-never did. After some research, chose La Mision-fine choice! We stayed in Jr Suite-San Francisco. For $130- per night, room was quite spacious, pull out couch , comfy chair, coffee table, desk & comfy bed.2 sets of French doors opened onto the courtyard-lovely. No real balcony, but great breeze & view. One day, I noticed doors open to several of the "standard" rooms, so I had to peek-also lovely & would be very comfie. Staff were very kind & helpful. Location was AMAZING, easy walk to town square & many of the "can't miss" sites. We didn't spend any time in the restaurant, heard it was ok, menu looked fine, just wanted to get out & experience as much as possible of Merida itself. Pool area/courtyard isn't huge, but was extremely clean & quaint. Chose this place partially because we wanted a hotel with more than 5-8 rooms, seems there are many tiny accomodations. We also wanted to avoid the big chains, which thankfully aren't located in the middle of the beautiful & quaint town. No real downsides, but I suppose if I was pressed to find some, I'd say that shower heads were not amazing & that it would have been nice to have a small refrig in room. It might have been nice to meet & chat with a few other guests, perhaps we missed everybody as we slept in a bit. Dinner & the town don't really get going until later, we were out & about much later than normal. I read previous reviews re:some rooms being pretty loud, we certainly didn't experience anything like that. If you are looking for workout room, business center & large lobby w/ vending machines-don't stay here. If you want a comfortable, quaint, classy hotel in a wonderful location-book now!
Other notes on Merida=
Sundays are amazing! Spent the day in Centro/town square. Costumed folk dancing, bands, amazing food, markets. Rent a car & go to Chitzen Itza-roads are fine & its an easy drive.Restaurants=Pancho's for great atmosphere & killer Mojito's, Chaya for authentic meals, Frida's for mole, Piqua for seafood-lunch is apparently best time to go. Merida is not a huge tourist mecca, a very good thing in our book, brush up on your Spanish-will come in handy.

I stayed at Fray Diego three nights over the New Year's holiday. I was very pleased overall.

Location: The hotel is very well located to the center of the city on a side street. You will only walk about five minutes to get to the cathedral, palace, square, shops and restaurants. The street the hotel is on is busy with narrow sidewalks and not much to look at, but it's centrally located and has two or three internet places on it if you don't use the hotel's wi-fi. I especially recommend Casa Frida for dinner a block or two down the street. Fantastic food.

Rooms: The rooms surround a pretty courtyard with a small pool, lawn chairs and a fountain. The rooms are basic but clean. Not the nicest or most comforting rooms I've seen in Mexico, but adequate.

Staff: Very good. Answered all questions, helped with directions, helped with questions about trips to Chichen Itza and Tulum.

Negatives: Wi-fi didn't really work. Room could have been better decorated, made more comfy. Street outside isn't nice to look at. However, I wouldn't let these small issues discourage you from staying there. Great hotel.
