“Unpleasant changes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

Arrived in Merida in early December and on a recommendation we went to Chaya Maya and really enjoyed our food and the way it was presented, that we went back three more times. Great traditional food at reasonable prices.
Early February we brought our friends here to experience this restaurant. We were so embarrassed because the presentation, quantity and prices were different than we experienced on our previous visits. Food was served very plainly, smaller portions, and at a higher price.
It's unfortunate that people going for the first time now will never experience the Chaya Maya as it was.

“Nice local restaurant with great food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013 via mobile

La Chaya is a local restaurant with great food. Try agua de Chaya ( chaya water).
We went for breakfast and for dinner, and in both cases we loved the food.
Service is average, it depends on the waiter, some of them are nice and some not.
I will go back when in Merida again.

“Fun local place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

On a side street near the main plaza. We had a fun lunch here. Strictly local Maya cuisine. A lady in local dress in the window making tortillas by hand, and another one inside; the fresh tortillas come with all the orders. Lots of local families eating there.

“Excellent yucatecan food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

One of the few restaurants that was always busy with a wide variety of people. They handmake tortillas on site. We went back for 3 different meals it was so good: papadzules, seafood pibil, chaya juice excellent.

“Victims of their own success?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

I've been to La Chaya a number of times and have always had good food and been well looked after......until the last time I went there on 31 January. I ordered a margarita and the cochinita (pork). The margarita was not very pleasant at all, so sweet that I couldn't really drink it, and the cochinita was not up to the usual standard either. Added to which the handmade tortillas, which are such a feature there, arrived some time before the pork so were getting cold. But the worst thing was the service, just too few waiters who didn't seem to know what they were doing looking after too many people. I had to ask for the bill 3 times and eventually had to get up and make my way to the door before I could get anyone to give me my bill! I'm afraid that they have become victims of their own success - the place is always packed - and standards have slipped. Maybe the opening of their second restaurant nearby has some to do with this?
