“good market”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

good variety of stuff, you can get almost anything you need there from clothes, groceries, appliances, water, etc. We enjoyed the fresh baked pastries. Little lacking in the meat dept, but did buy steaks for 10 one night and was reasonably priced/aprox $5 for T-bone. we went there a lot, since large family staying in a house. Somewhat challenging to figure out what is in the packages if you don't know much Spanish!

“Typical retail area - expect variety and lots of sales pitches...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

I read with interest the negative reviews of this area: complaints of pushy vendors, over-pricing, etc. Well, do bear in mind that for a lot of these folk, what they sell today determines how well they eat tomorrow. Sure, they're pushy, but they've also heard the word "no" often enough...just smile, say "no" and keep walking.

There is the usual selection of tourist wares available: don't be afraid to haggle and/or to ask for a discount when buying multiple items. I usually start by offering 25% of their offer, and see where it goes from there...chances are they're not the only vendor selling the item in question, so walking away is no disaster. T-shirts, knickknacks etc are readily available. There are numerous jewelry stores as well, but I'd suggest checking with Tripadvisor before buying, as some have an iffy reputation. Also, if buying a "big-ticket" item, use a credit card, so if there's a problem, you will have some recourse.

All in all, it's a fun place to wander through: just remember to say "no, gracias," and keep walking!

“Loved it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

I loved everything about Isla Mujeres. Centro was a great little area full of shops and restaurants and bars.
The only downside, as with any street shopping in Mexico, is the constant "what are you looking for? it's free to look? how much do you want to spend? I give you a good price!"
But it was a beautiful island, beautiful town, and a beautiful market.

“Great little street, pushy sales people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

This main pedestrian street is great for shopping, however in the past the shop owners and sales people weren't as pushy. The local music and dancers are a great attraction at night time on this street. Be advised there can be a little bit of a communication gap with the locals if you don't speak Spanish. Bring your own calculator or be a math wise to make sure you aren't getting swindled in any conversions between U.S. Dollars and Mexicans Pesos unless your a good negotiator because you can talk them down on price sometimes.
