Los Fueguitos is the brainchild of Karen and Matthias, who used to co-own Manana (one of our favourite breakfast stops for Matthias' homemade bread.) They sold their interest and brought the same attention to detail and delicious bread to Los Fueguitos. The wine list is small and heavy on Argentine wines, befitting an Argentine steakhouse. We ordered a bottle (a cab-shiraz, I think it was called Mono) for a very reasonable 220 pesos and enjoyed every sip.
The meal began with Matthias' bread - small round rolls, still warm from the oven, chewy, not crumbly. Absolute perfection. They came with tasting portions of marinated eggplant and chickpeas.
The menu is small and straightforward: pick your steak; all come with a simple salad with balsamic dressing and roasted sweet and white potatoes. There are a few homemade pasta options and a burger.
My husband had the rib eye (350 pesos) and I had the tenderloin (280 pesos). They arrived perfectly done - as if Matthias had read our minds (this is even more impressive given that I have to describe how I like my steak in about three sentences.) The steaks came with three sauces: chimichurri, sweet pepper, and hot. I adore chimichurri sauce and it is a testament to these steaks that they were best plain. They needed nothing.
We finished by sharing a flan, which in Mexico is a custard (this one with a delicious dulce de leche sauce). Our server, Bianca, took great care of us.
It was the most expensive meal we've ever enjoyed on Isla - the bill came in at 980 pesos - and it was worth every penny. It was perfect down to the smallest detail.
We stopped to chat to Matthias in the kitchen and while I don't know him well at all, what struck me immediately was how happy he looked. He is exactly where he was born to be and everything that comes out of his kitchen shows it. A meal like that back home would cost close to $200.00. To enjoy it for less than $80 is an incredible bargain.
The front part of the restaurant (essentially a waiting area) is often empty... that's because most of the tables (and the gorgeous ocean view) are in the back. Los Fueguitos is a wonderful addition to Isla. Don't miss it.
