A great location right on Playa Norte. We stayed in condo #18 that we found on VBRO and rented through the management company "Isla Property Rental". While we enjoyed our stay for the most part, it wasn’t without a few disappointments.
The good things . . .
You are literally right on the beach! The complex is very well maintained and always fresh and cleans to start the day. Condo #18 is located towards the west end of the complex with a partial view of the beach and pool area but really looks out at the parking area and another hotel. The property staff was all wonderful and always eager to provide whatever service we needed. Property access is controlled by a gate and 24 hour security so we always felt safe coming and going no matter what time it was. Victor the night security guard was oh so nice and always greeted us with a smile. Access to the beach is also monitored so only guests of the complex can use it. The beach attendants were great also and will set up lounge chairs, an umbrella and a table for you. We always gave them a tip for their efforts and received a smile in return. Depending on where you land on the beach there are two options for service. To the left is Chi-Chi’s that delivers great 2 for 1 frozen drinks and food. To the right there is the Sunset Grill that offers a variety of drinks and a great selection of food. Sunset Grill is independently operated but is located within the property. They offer protected open air seating and a large deck area, have live music in the evenings and a small palapa bar on the beach. We ate there a few times and enjoyed every meal.
The ocean is spectacular in every way and the beautiful pictures you see don’t do it justice! The water is clear and calm for over thirty feet from the shore with very little break. The salt content is high so you can float effortlessly on the water. We spent hours at a time just soaking in the sun and floating on the water. This area of the beach is popular with day trippers that come by boat. From catamarans to yachts they all moor offshore to hang out and enjoy the beautiful coast. This has to be one of the most picturesque beaches in all of Mexico. A true gem!
The condo is modest in size but offered all the essentials. It has a small, but fully equipped kitchenette with a large fridge, several small appliances and a dining table (don’t leave food out overnight or it will be covered in ants in the morning!). There’s main seating area with a TV and left behind books, CDs and magazines that looks out through a glass door onto the balcony. The tiny bathroom had a separate vanity with zero counter space, a decent hair dryer and a bathtub/shower with only the shower operational. The bedrooms are average in size with sufficient storage and a safe. The queen-size bed was firm but comfortable with four fluffy pillows. The AC worked well and kept the condo cool, but it made an awful noise when running that kept us awake at night. Bottled water is provided as well as maid service every other day. Our housekeeper Lupita was very thorough and personable.
Now the not so good things . . .
Access to our condo was from the backside of the building. Since the west side access was kept locked we were required to walk all the way to the east end to access the stairs. Not a big deal, but I’ll get to that later. We arrived on a Saturday and everything was fine until Monday morning. At nine o’clock we began to hear loud hammering outside our door. When we looked to see what was happening we found a small construction crew breaking up the floor tiles by hand in the hallway. The noise became louder when they began using a jackhammer to clear the tiles. This was no small project as each walkway is about 200 feet long and there are three floors. This all came as a complete surprise to us. We emailed Isla Property Rental asking why were not made aware of the remodeling, how long was it going to last and if it would prevent access to our condo. The response we received was less than apologetic. Actually there was no apology at all, only a brief statement that work would end each day at 5 o’clock, that it would be completed by Friday and that our access would not be restricted. That could not have been further from the truth. With the hammering and scrapping going on non-stop we had little choice but to leave the condo during the day. No more afternoon naps or relaxing on the balcony. The noise was constant and overwhelming, staring each day at 9 o’clock and not ending until 7 o’clock or later. To make matters worse by Tuesday the weather turned to rain. While the weather is out of everyone’s control it compounded the inconvenience by limiting our ability to leave the condo without getting drenched. We made the best of our time by driving our golf cart around the island. It was far better than staying in and listening to the constant hammering outside our condo door. But we could only stay away for so long and had no choice but to endure the noise whenever there. We were very disappointed with Isla Property Rental for their shear lack of concern for our comfort and for not offering even an apology much less any form of compensation (the representative from Isla Property Rental, Candelario Chim was seen multiple times on-site but never made any effort to speak to us).
We loved everything about Isla Mujeres, including Nautibeach. The location can’t be beat and the overall service we received from those on-site was phenomenal. We did learn some valuable lessons this trip. Vacationing during the off-season comes with risks and you have to ask questions about possible remodeling, business closures and any other type of inconvenience that might occur. We met so many wonderful people both local and travelers like us. We plan to come back again but will rent through the Nautibeach coop instead. By the way . . . the new tile walkways came out great!
The beach is the best on the island!
