My wife and I just returned from a trip to Isla Mujeres. We stayed in a very nice secluded apartment at Playa Gaviota. Elsewhere on this site is a rather disparaging review of Gaviota, but we found everything to be fine. Under new ownership, the staff was focused on insuring that our stay was enjoyable. We were met upon arrival, the room was clean, and maid service was provided daily. The public bus stop is about a quarter mile from the apartments making negotiation of Isla quite simple. Although not really a swimming beach, the beach is secluded, clean, and thoroughly enjoyable after a day of snorkeling at the Hotel Castilla Garrafon Beach Club or a day at Isla’s main beach, Playa Norte. Casa O’s restaurant is a short walk up the hill. We would not hesitate to return as the location is an excellent escape from the more crowded north end of the island. It is secluded but a place from where you can easily access the entire island with no difficulty.
