Among all the restaurant touts, the dinner street hustlers, and the over-the-top high-pressure sales tactics of other nearby restaurants, here is a real diamond in the rough. no pressure, nothing like all the other nearby mediocre restaurants. at this restaurant, the food itself does the selling!
Lola is both a wonderful chef and a food artist, although she personally told me her background is art history and architecture (not sure how she became such a chef, but i will save that for another visit). She is totally down-to-earth and completely unpretentious. She is a woman who is just there to serve up a fantastic meal!
i ordered the fish taco meal, and i have to say this was the best fish taco plate i ever had, but it does NOT look anything like fish tacos since again, she turned it into a work of art. honestly, one almost feels guilty eating such a beautiful creation!
my wife ordered the red snapper dinner with coconut rice, black beans, and salsa with a mango chutney sauce, and she was just as amazed as i was.
interesting enough, she told me she used to own the mango cafe further south, another highly rated TA restaurant. however, when we tried to visit this place, it was closed, even though the sign said it was open.
so next time you are in Isla Mujeres and cant tell the difference between a restaurant hawker and a time-share salesman, visit Lola ! she is located at the north end of the pedestrian street, so you can easily avoid the mayhem just a few steps further south.
