Arrived at 8:30 & after snorkel gear/life jacket fitting we were on the way. The agenda was to head directly to Isla Contoy to see the birds, followed by lunch and a reef snorkel trip.
We were led by Noah & Alberto, Tony's nephew & brother. They were both friendly and able. After a one hour bumpy ride through 2 ft waves, we made it to Contoy. We were the first boat there and as it turned out, the smallest boat. At least the boat had a canopy & padded seats.
The strategy was sound. Our group of 7 was able to thoroughly check out the sights before the large tour boats from Cancun arrived. Although, we were a little disappointed in the limited amount of trails on the island, we were able to get very close to nesting frigate birds near the small boat dock. It was a cool sight to see them up close in their natural habitat. Also, the views from the tower were great.
By the time the other boats arrived, Noah & Alberto had prepared a delicious lunch. There are a lot of hermit crabs running around and we had some beach/shore snorkel/siesta time. On the way back, we stopped at a beautiful reef for snorkeling. Saw schools of literally thousands of fish. We also saw some large turtles on the way back..
Great way to spend the day.
