“Great location, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

We stayed at Cabanas Maria Del Mar from Dec 8th to the 15th in the Castle section and it met our expectations. We were originally in room # 1 but the air conditioning didn’t work so we were moved to room #9. The front desk wasn’t very helpful with the move which is probably our only complaint. We reported the AC not working on our way out to dinner figuring it would give them time to take a look at it. When we got back, nothing had been done about it and the girl just came up with us, hit the button and agreed it was broken. They did move us to another room but could have had that sorted out before we got back and turned on the AC to have the room cool. Other than that the room was kept clean and had everything that we needed for the week. The bed was very comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was pretty good. It was also nice to have a fridge to keep drinks and snacks cold. There’s a power switch on the wall for the fridge so make sure you don’t turn it off when you hit the light switches. The hotel was right on North beach and it was a 30 second walk from our room to the beach. The beach chairs were 50 pesos each for the day which we found reasonable. It was nice to not have to deal with the towel game that people play at an all-inclusive. Once you pay your 50 pesos they put a tag on the chair and give you a receipt so the chair is yours for the day. You can come and go as many times as you want and still know your chair will be there. It was definitely worth it and I would pay again over dealing with the towel game that people play at resorts. There was plenty of shade from the palm trees so we never bothered renting an umbrella. The sunset on North Beach is gorgeous so we’d end our days with a drink watching the sun go down.
The breakfast consists of toast and coffee and the restaurant setting is beautiful. It doesn’t get much better than drinking your morning coffee with your feet in the sand. We rented the golf carts from the hotel, the price was reasonable and it was a great way to see the island.
It was our first visit to Isla Mujeres and we really enjoyed it. The only thing I would do is completely avoid Hidalgo street in the future. It is impossible to walk down the street without having store and restaurant owners hound you every step of the way. It is so difficult to read someone’s menu that we started going to the waterfront instead and avoided Hidalgo restaurants all together after the first couple of days. The waterfront restaurants still try to draw you into their restaurant but it wasn’t as aggressive as Hidalgo.
I’ve posted some reviews on some of the restaurants that we ate at as well as the dive shop, Squalo Adventures that we did 6 dives with. All in all we had a great vacation and will visit again one day.

Though the place is priced right and on the best beach, we personally had a bad experience there. My husband woke up to a rat biting him on the thumb! It was midnight. I went down to the lobby, and was only able to find an older man working that knew very little English, who came to help my husband catch the large rat. My husband killed it by swinging it by the tail against the wall. Then the guy would not give us another room until morning, and would have even left the dead rat, had we not insisted he take it with him. The next morning I spoke with the lady at the desk, who said "so sorry, never happened before" but never offered anything except another room. I figured it probably had a rat in it too, so insisted they come and clean and spray our room, which they did with my husbands help pulling out the
refrigerator, turning over mattresses, etc. they refused to spray the mattresses (we c/o of feeling "crawly" they whole time, but never saw anything/suspect body lice). We did Rid when got home just to be sure. They never did anything to compensate our problems.

I booked a room here on a recommendation and was very pleased with the beach front location. And our partial ocean view in the castle rooms, which I believe are newer. The rooms are basic, clean, comfortable beds, hot water, safe, and on the best beach on this island. I would highly recommend a stay here for anyone looking for a great value, budget hotel.

Fair price VS facilities. This is an old hotel at the north beach area. It has a nice beach access but also the public beach area is great to the a sun bath and a great swim.

Personnel is friendly.
Rooms are simple but spacious. They have a safe deposit box, refrigerator, AC and ceiling fan. Also they have a clean pool and tables around the pool.

i brought my mother with me for my fourth trip here. this is the third time i have stayed here. when i return i will stay here again. the rooms have fridges, safety deposit boxes, and you are only a few steps away from the beach (playa norte), which was voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world :)
The manager is always friendly ,and very helpful if you need directions or help with anything. i rented a golf cart here for 45 U.S. dollars for 24 hrs. it is always quiet here, which is one of the reasons i like to stay here. i have booked all 4 of my trips to isla mujeras through bookit.com, which works with the hotel, and i have NEVER had any problems when i arrived.

This hotel is located right in the heart of things on beautiful North beach. My husband and I stayed in a castle room and loved it!! We had a corner room and our balcony looked out to the beach. The rooms were simple yet spacious and clean. Their beach tiki bar was nice and relaxing. The free breakfast at their outdoor beach restaurant is just toast and coffee so don't waste your time on that and instead walk a few blocks to the main street where there are tons of restaurants (and bars) to choose from. Only con about this hotel was you had to pay for the beach chairs and beds. My hubby and I just brought the hotel towels downstairs to the beach and laid on those instead and still had a great time!! I'd recommend this hotel to anyone and will definitely stay here again!!

We rented a room in the Tower as they call it. It's the newer building and steps from the beautiful beach. The room was very spacious and newly built-the AC was excellent and it faced a side yard, although not a real view we appreciated the quietness for a good nights sleep. Internet worked great in our room and was useful in searching out a restaurant. There was a loveseat and a table with two chairs plus a little balcony with two outside chairs. We felt it was a good value for the price of $58 and the bed was excellent-much better than the one at our expenxive all inclusive that we had went to the following days. Quiet, great ac, good internet, comfy bed! The continental breakfast wasn't much so we skipped it and went to Mango Cafe! We wake up early and wanted our coffee and Mango opens at 7am. There was a little fridge to keep a few beers cold, a coffee maker would have been a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again, the location is excellent. We also rented a golf cart from the hotel and it was a blast!!! It really made our visit more enjoyable to get in that cart and cool off with the breeze hitting you as youd poked around the island.
