We stayed at Cabanas Maria Del Mar from Dec 8th to the 15th in the Castle section and it met our expectations. We were originally in room # 1 but the air conditioning didn’t work so we were moved to room #9. The front desk wasn’t very helpful with the move which is probably our only complaint. We reported the AC not working on our way out to dinner figuring it would give them time to take a look at it. When we got back, nothing had been done about it and the girl just came up with us, hit the button and agreed it was broken. They did move us to another room but could have had that sorted out before we got back and turned on the AC to have the room cool. Other than that the room was kept clean and had everything that we needed for the week. The bed was very comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was pretty good. It was also nice to have a fridge to keep drinks and snacks cold. There’s a power switch on the wall for the fridge so make sure you don’t turn it off when you hit the light switches. The hotel was right on North beach and it was a 30 second walk from our room to the beach. The beach chairs were 50 pesos each for the day which we found reasonable. It was nice to not have to deal with the towel game that people play at an all-inclusive. Once you pay your 50 pesos they put a tag on the chair and give you a receipt so the chair is yours for the day. You can come and go as many times as you want and still know your chair will be there. It was definitely worth it and I would pay again over dealing with the towel game that people play at resorts. There was plenty of shade from the palm trees so we never bothered renting an umbrella. The sunset on North Beach is gorgeous so we’d end our days with a drink watching the sun go down.
The breakfast consists of toast and coffee and the restaurant setting is beautiful. It doesn’t get much better than drinking your morning coffee with your feet in the sand. We rented the golf carts from the hotel, the price was reasonable and it was a great way to see the island.
It was our first visit to Isla Mujeres and we really enjoyed it. The only thing I would do is completely avoid Hidalgo street in the future. It is impossible to walk down the street without having store and restaurant owners hound you every step of the way. It is so difficult to read someone’s menu that we started going to the waterfront instead and avoided Hidalgo restaurants all together after the first couple of days. The waterfront restaurants still try to draw you into their restaurant but it wasn’t as aggressive as Hidalgo.
I’ve posted some reviews on some of the restaurants that we ate at as well as the dive shop, Squalo Adventures that we did 6 dives with. All in all we had a great vacation and will visit again one day.
