“Februrary 2010 Review Right On”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2010

Having made our reservations last fall, we had not read the February 2010 review, because if we had, we probably wouldn't have stayed at this property.

The street construction is finished, the pool clean. However, everything else they said holds true. We traveled with another couple, so occupied both levels. Upper level: Vinyl toilet seat still cracked in an uncomfortable place; bathroom sink pipe still held together with February traveler's duct tape (we assume it is still their duct tape); sink still falls off wall with slightest provocation; amoire drawers falling apart; shower curtain rusty and moldy, sheets pilly and thin; lamp beside bed has no light bulb; Lower Unit: microwave does not seem to heat food; push pump for water jug unusable; no working clocks (a couple of broken ones); armoire drawers a wreck; sheets so thin you can see through them.

Door locks are also an issue. A dead bolt would make them more secure; the upper level key is almost impossible to remove from the lock.

On a positive note, the view from the upper level is spectacular, the refrigerator nice and new on upper levelb, beds are comforable; pool refreshing; privacy garden appreciated; upper unit very clean; property manager helpful.

None of the issues mentioned are insolvable, and with some refurbishing, this would be a stellar property!

Please note property manager is being replaced. I did note you mentioned property manager was good. Confusing to me as she was responsible for keeping units in great condition. We had not been down for 1 1/2 years due to my disabilities.. We were shocked at the lack of care. She did your booking so you would think more care would of been given to you so you would use her services again. Oct/Nov guests gave great reviews, I don't know what happened but we were shocked ourselves when we came.Mar/April. I also commented to Jan guest. I am sorry you did not have a grand experience. Our new property manager owns his own units and knows property management and preventive care. Anyone needing property management I would highly recommend Miquels Island Escape. Again very sorry.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2010

We just spent a month on Isla and secured accommodations for the duration of our stay at the Vista Alegre (28 nights). We are well seasoned travelers and in because we are, we never travel without duct tape, zip pulls or climbing gear.
Yes, the value was okay. Yes, the location is lovely, Yes its quite, Yes its away from the busy tourist areas and Yes its close to grocery stores. The sunrises that greeted us each morning were the highlight of each day...beautiful. However, its only fair that the following review be expressed.

When we checked in, there was no water in the water holder...no biggy but we were thirsty...we made due. The night of our arrival, the Mrs. went outside to sit on the deck furniture (she's 105 lbs). and the loungers being sun beaten...broke. She fell through to the pavement and cut her arm. No biggy..we had band-aids. Bit a shock though...they got around to replacing the loungers about 3 days later.

Bottom Unit:
One of the wall pictures has (had) a broken glass frame. Not sure why it was still hanging on the wall...bit of a hazard.
We had to use duct tape to repair the armoire dresser drawers. Without duct tape we would have not been able to use the drawers.
Floor fan broken. Was replaced three days later.
If you stay longer than 7 days, you'll have to defrost the fridge freezer.
No reading lights. If you want to read a book in bed at night, be sure to pack either a flashlight or mountain climbing headlamp. Thankfully we had packed our climbing headlamps.
We advised the management company l that we had no bed side lights, we never did get one/any.
You have to call the management company to get fresh linens. We had to wash ours in the kitchen sink and dry them on the line out back. We adapted when we had to.
Dish strainer: completely rusted out. When housekeeping did arrive (once in 20 days) she threw out the strainer and never replaced it.

We had the opportunity of introducing ourselves to nice folks from Europe who checked in upstairs on January 01. When we chatted again on January 5th that they informed us that since their arrival (from Europe) they had been without running water and subsequently had not been able to shower. They told us they had informed the management company...alas when day 5 appeared and they had yet been able to shower. We immediately invited them to use the shower in our unit. They finally got running water on January 8th (yikes).

When the folks upstairs flew back to Europe (Jan 17), we had the opportunity of moving up to the top floor unit (yes the view is wonderful). Glad we were able to do so because Isla construction workers were tearing up the road with tractors to install new sewer lines. With tractors tearing up the street each morning creating 5 foot piles of dirt, it made for an interesting walk to get around the corner were we parked our golf cart.
No biggy..in that we were now on the top floor we didn't have to stare out at the piles of dirt that lined the entire street. The top unit offers a beautiful view of the Caribbean.

Construction is not something that anyone could do anything about, because it happens all over the world...all the time. Just want fellow travelers to know that as of last week the road was still ripped up. The good side was...no traffic.

Upper Unit:
The upstairs dresser was in worse shape then the one downstairs, so we swapped the two dresser drawers upstairs for the two we duct taped from downstairs. Microwave broken, A/C unit broken, blender needed pliers to turn on, bathroom sink ready to fall of the wall. We had to use duct tape to keep the bathroom sink pipe together so water wouldn't flow onto the floor. Unit requires a new toilet seat. Also requires a new floor fan (don't turn this fan off ..its hard to get going again). Nice fridge.

Wading pool pump is broken so the there's no circulation of water. I spoke with the pool guys late December and they agreed that indeed the pool pump was (is) broken. Turn the pump on and the pool drains. I informed the management company about this, but they informed me it worked fine. Not sure what the pool boys are telling the management company. Hopefully it will be repaired for your arrival.
You will have to call the management company to get the pool cleaners out there to skim the top and vacuum the bottom ...they only showed up when we called. Be sure to rinse off as there is/was way to much chlorine in the water.

King size beds in both units were very comfortable...but the sheets were very pilly.

We were told there wasn't a BBQ on site and offered to pay for one (prior to our arrival) had the property manager been able to get to Cancun to purchase one...this didn't happen...so we packed our "own" little hibachi and left it there in the hopes other guests could get some use from it. Depending on how much its used, it may last another couple of months if its taken care of. You can purchase charcoal and lighter fluid at the grocery store in town. This property really should have a proper BBQ.

Overall we wouldn't suggest staying at this property for any longer than 5 nights or so, then move on. We had prepaid our entire stay...so we opted to hang in. For another $20.00 a night we could have stayed around the corner at Casa Exchel (spelling may not be correct) - a great place for dining, lovely property.

Casa Vista Alegre has a lot of potential, (the location is wonderful) the owners should charge a little more so they can keep these accommodations in better shape. It's called TLC and these units are in need of a solid dose.

All in all, this property barely makes it to a rating of POOR. We've seen worse and experienced better.
Would we stay at Casa Vista Alegre again? Nope. However, if you're an adventurer and opt to stay here for a lengthy period of time, pack duct tape and consider flashlights and/or climbing headlamps to read your book by.

Property manager is being changed. Sorry for your experience at our property. We love the location and view. We usually get down each year before the busy season starts. Unfortunately we had not been down for 1 1/2 years due to my health. We hired an American property manager to know the expections of USA and Canadian travelers. I know I responded to many of your questions promptly other than I could not receive a response from property manager on grill. I emailed 5 or more times with no response, It was high season along with a personal matter which I thought was the problem. We had guests Oct and Nov which loved it. Being a resort property manager/owner in Canada yes I knew you would have expectations. I was not bought my acknowledgement of road for sewer was being done. No one advised of any problems or issues before main season started. A guest email photos which I forwarded to property manager stating in subject "VISTA ALEGRE NEEDS CLEANING".I did not do the booking for Europeans or Feb guests. These were booked by manager so you would of expected they would be attended to. We went in Mar/April and was quite shocked. Front door screen duct taped on at bottom plus many other thiings to fix. All I can say is we are very embarassed. The screen was cut out in kitchen and property manager stuck head through to talk, not even a mention we need to get this fixed. Again sorry for conditions you had to experience. A freind advised me to read this report. I was more than shocked.

I paid a third of what it cost me on the island last year for a better room, with a kitchen, and a balcony with an incredible view of the ocean. There were also several great restaurants within walking distance. A great place to escape the cruise ship tourists:)
