We just returned yesterday from 5 days at the Aura Wyndham in Cozumel. We have traveled to the Yucatan before, so we had skepticism of the resort quality. Our final two choices were the Aura Wyndham or the Occidental. We chose the Wyndham because of the all-inclusive pricing, adults only policy, and the Trip Advisor reviews. We couldn't have had a better experience at this hotel.
From the moment we arrived, the first class quality of the hotel was evident. We were greeted with champagne and a fresh washcloth while we checked in. We were shown to the room by a most pleasant steward, and given the quick tour. All of the staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and in tune with any requests.
The food is unbelievable. Way above our expectations. We live in Dallas, where we dine at fine restaurants, and know what to expect in good service. They did not miss a beat on any of our requests. The Isola restaurant is amazing - especially the seafood dishes. Our first night, we had a 5 course meal. The servers even properly switch out silverware to match what is ordered, and during the meal to match up with appetizers, salads, main courses, etc. My only slight disappointment was the Filet Minion, but we are spoiled by top steakhouses in Dallas. The filet was good, but not a big filet like the size of your fist like they serve at Del Frisco's or Bob's.
The beach is very nice, the pool was cleaned daily, they are quick to provide fresh beach towels and drinks poolside, and everything is manicured and maintained. The staff really takes pride in their work, and it shows. The beds are amazingly comfortable, and the rainforest showerhead was perfect. We had an ocean view room on the second floor, and would do the same. Don't pay for the upgrade to the junior suite on the 3rd level with a small private pool on the roof - the people we met who had that say that they didn't use it. That's probably a better option during the busy season.
Other reviews mention the mosquitoes. They are there (as well as every other part of Cozumel in October), but because of the rains they have had over the last 3 weeks. Don't bother to take your own mosquito repellant - spring for the $10 can that the resort sells. It REALLY works! It must have something in the formula that is banned in the US - the aerosol propellant is strong smelling for about 2 seconds, then you never smell it again.
The diving was amazing, and Juan can arrange a dive, even for first timers, right from the activity hut on the beach. He will also work to arrange fishing, snorkeling, or other activities with other couples looking to share expenses on larger boats.
We went to Aura because it was our 10 year anniversary. If we had just found this place 10 years earlier, I'd say once you consider the food, overall cost, scuba diving quality, and ease of travel from the states, it beats our Hawaii honeymoon in my book.
If you know you're going to Cozumel, and want an excellent hotel sans children, my recommendation is to stop looking at the other hotels in Cozumel, and go stay at Aura. You won't be disappointed.
