After a disappointing experience at the Occidental Grand Papagayo in Costa Rica during Christmas week, the manager offered our family a complimentary week at another of their resorts. We were not permitted to rebook Christmas week even though we stayed during Christmas in Costa Rica.
We chose the Occidental Grand Cozumel during Thanksgiving since this was the only other time we could get away with our children.
We were upgraded to the Royal Club and it is certainly better than the regular accomodations, it is still below the level of comfort found at any Holiday inn in the U.S. The beds are extremely hard, the room airconditioner is loud and blows cold damp air. An airconditioner should dehumidify for comfort. The rooms smell musty, but you get used to it.
The best part of the Royal Club is the private restaurant for breakfast and lunch, it was pretty good. The worst part of the Occidental Grand Cozumel is the food choices for dinner. Even the specialty restaurants were inedible. The buffet restaurant has a very poor selection, I could not even find enough lettuce to make a salad. You would think they would always offer a generic pasta and pizza to fall back on.
The Occidental Grand Papagayo in Costa Rica had much better food and the specialty restaurants were acceptable.
We plan on eating the rest of our dinners in Cozumel since there does not seem to be much to eat here for dinner.
It is unfortunate that a resort as visually appealing as this is does not go the extra mile to offer food that is acceptable to US travelers. If they allowed their staff to simply cook authentic Mexican food, I think we would all be much happier.
My one recommendation would be to always offer pasta with marinara sauce and fesh fruit and salad to offer us guests with functioning palates something to eat without going to town.
