We just returned from our 4th trip to the Occidental Grand, but first time staying in the Royal Club. The rooms are about the same as the deluxe room with extra bath amentities, a nice jacouzi tub. Free internet service was really nice. A small Royal Club private pool was a very nice touch when you want a little quiet time.
The Royal Club restaraunt had really good food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner is reservations only and they do have a dress code. Service and food here is always excellant!
You can make as many reservations as you want at the a-la-cart restaraunts. We made ours daily since we hate to be on a schedule.
The service at the Royal Club was excellant in all areas except one person Manuel who did our was checkout. (Check out is done the the Royal Club office. ) He tried to charge us for the Royal Club fee again, but changed his mind when I demanded to see a manager. (short version) The resort did apologize for Manuals behavior and said it was a computor glitch. He did however refuse to give me his name.
The resort outside of the Royal Club is very pretty also. My favorite part of this resort is the individual 3 story buildings;Giving it a more intimate feel with the sprawling gardens and landscape.
There are 2 pools - one quiet pool which was at times invaded by the parents with young children crying. The second main pool was also very busy with the children. Both are kept clean and are refreshing .
There have been a lot of improvements to the Beach Club restaraunt, which in the past for me has been a very low spot. They have added refridgerated cases for the desserts. More covered containers for food along with a freezer for the grilled meats. The service was much better also.
La Posada has a breakfast and dinner buffet. It was kept well stocked and I could always find something good to eat.
We did try Sonora Steak House. We personally did not care for it. The service was very slow and the food was not for us. We met up with 3 other couples in La Posada immediately after we all had dinner at Sonora.
We did not try the Meditaranian or the Pizza place.
The beach is my favorite. They have added more shade areas and more chairs. It makes it look smaller, but you can find a chair. They do clean the towels off the chairs if they are left for long periods of time. Also another nice addition are the new Beach Beds off to the right of the main pool.
The gift shop has a lot of everyday items. I have discovered I can skip the " baggie" and just buy it there. Also their T shirts are nice quality and good priced. Pretty jewery also.
Entertainment at night has increased. One night they had a fire show with dancers with a dance following after the show. Most nights they had some type of entertainment.

All in all the Grand and the Royal Club is our favorite place and we will be returning to the Grand, even with the problem at check out . I feel the Royal Club was worth the extra.

We stayed in the "Royal Club" area of this resort but were not informed upon arrival what all this included. We found out the next to last day that we had a special restaurant we could use and that we could get free movie rentals from the front desk. There was plenty of sun but the water in the pools was FREEZING cold! I had a pedicure from the spa that was not worth a dime.
My husband was told he had to wear closed toe shoes to dinner, so he changed into tennis shoes, but then every man in the restaurant had on flip flops.
They insist you have a reservation for several restaurants, but there were only 5-6 other people eating with at least 20 open tables.
All in all a fairly nice place...probably won't return though.

During our trip to the Yucatan, we decided to spend 3 days out on Cozumel. It wasn't enough... it was truly the highlight of our trip.

The Occidental Grand Cozumel was just a wonderful place to stay. When we arrived, we were told that we were being upgraded to the Royal Club because we had reserved a king room and none were available. We still didn't have a king bed, but it was so nice to have that upgrade, that we really didn't mind! The Royal Club is kind of elitist, but I would probably pay for the upgrade again now that I know what it's like. You're rooms are the closest to the beach and you get your own concierge, your own restaurant, room service plus probably some other extras that I am forgetting. Not that we spent all of our time there... I actually really enjoyed the open air restaurant/bar down on the beach (not to mention the beach itself), but we did try the buffet one night and definitely preferred the Royal Club for dinner. The one quirky thing about this place is that they don't use straws. I suppose they are trying to be environmentally friendly, but it was kind of strange not having them for some of the frozen drinks.

The resort itself is very charming and nothing is really too spread out (so you're not walking for miles like at some places). We rented a jeep to tour the island of Cozumel and that was definitely a good way to explore the island. We also booked a snorkeling tour from the dive shop at the resort and I suppose my only complaint about that trip was that it was too short and that we should have booked the longer tour. But that's our fault, not theirs.

This place (and Cozumel) definitely rocked. I can't wait to go back and when I do, I will probably stay here again.

  • Liked — Really enjoyed the beach
  • Disliked — Would have been nice to have a king bed, but they more than comped for it

How do you top your last stay here?..You stay at the Royal Club..Although unable to upgrade to a suite the room was great, with a balcony view of the ocean, jungle and RC pool(giant hot tub)..Room was always stocked with plenty of bottled water..We ate most meals at the RC restaurant..Especially enjoyed the private rest.,for breakfast and lunch,as opposed to a buffet..Service was outstanding!!..Arturo,Jose,and Fausto were excellent..Be sure and get the flaming coffee for a great show...Because of low occupancy, the only bar open after 6(besides disco),was the lobby bar..Not a problem since the best bartender,Manual worked there..Also ate steak and shrimp at the sonora which was very good..Rooftop pizza place being worked on,but moved to buffet rest..Beach was great, with plenty of chairs. If the beach is not big enough for you, walk in either direction for hundreds of yards of additional beach...The only negative, was not being able to snorkel from the onsite dive shop because of low occupancy..I felt they could have done more to get us a boat from the allegro or iberostar...I felt the RC was well worth the extra money and will do it again soon......

  • Liked — Private Restaurant

If you are looking for genuinely friendly staff, relaxing atmosphere yet plently to do - if you choose... well this is the place. This was our 3rd stay and we were not nor have we ever been disappointed. One recomendation would be to book the Royal Club, the service is incredible and the book the restaurants - especially the Royal Club restaurant. If you cannot afford the RC room accomodations that is fine, our previous stays were in regular rooms and just as nice except for the fect that we could not dine at the RC restaurant. The service, food quality and attention to your needs is surpassed by none. Again, try to dine at the restaurants, the buffet is fine but if you are loking for special then go for the restaurants.
The Grand Coz is our most favorite vacation place. You must try it and we highly recommend shopping in town but on Sunday - no ships come in on Sunday and while some people will say the shops will be closed, trust me, there will be more than enough open for business for you to get great deals on beautiful silver and Mexical artifacts. GO, you must go, it is truly heaven on earth, we will visit again shortly...

  • Liked — The Staff, they are absolutelly the most genuinely kind and helpful peole you will meet. Tip them!!
  • Disliked — Royal Club rooms could be a bit more lavish for the extra price but in all honesty - who cares about the room when all else is so wonderful.
