When we were looking for hotel accommodations for Cozumel, we looked thorough all the reviews on Tripadvisor. We definitely did not want to stay at an AI, and chose this place because we were looking for a place to really relax. During our stay we spent time here and at Villas Las Anclas.
Casa Viento is roughly 3 miles North of the main city and consequently it affords a very quiet and secluded feel. There is a beautiful beach only a minute’s walk away. The beach is nice, because when we stayed in downtown, there is water access, but no real beaches. There is golf, horseback riding and a full service beach with wave runners, and parasailing within a 10 minute walk. The downside to this location is that, if you want to go shopping or dine-out, you have to walk 5 minutes to catch a taxi back to town (5 dollars each way).
There are two buildings that make up Casa Viento. The first is a 6 unit apartment and the other is the “main house.” The pool is sandwiched between the two buildings, has some beautiful flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and is perfect for lying out and getting some sun.
The apartment building has private suites and we stayed in room 1. The website shows two twin beds, but they were pushed together to make one bed for our stay. All the bedding was appropriate for a king sized bed. The air conditioning worked well and there was a small kitchenette area with a stocked fridge, sink and microwave. It was a very cute and well decorated room.
While we were there, we also spent time hanging out in the main house, which all guests are welcome to enjoy. There is a TV, comfy couches and a full kitchen that you can use. Four dogs are also commonly running around, or lying on the couches too. The main house also has rooms for rent, and I assume that the bathroom facilities are shared. Smoking is allowed and occurs in the main house, so if you are bothered by that, or are allergic to dogs, you would want to stay in a private suite. There is also a PS2 rather then the XBOX on the website, if that is going to make or break your decision.
Lisa and Ed were our hosts for our stay, and they were incredibly friendly. The atmosphere at Casa Viento is like staying at a friend’s house. If you have any questions, they are happy to help with accurate knowledge, but for the most part, you are really left alone. The unobtrusiveness of the hosts seemed, at first, a little uncaring since we did not really know the boundaries of what we were allowed to do. It turns out that you can pretty much do anything or use anything in the house, and once we figured that out, the situation was much more comfortable. They are also great conversation, dinner guests and Mexican karaoke tour guides.
While we were guests, we were the only non-kiteboarders there. Because of the location and talented staff, this place is a Mecca for kite boarders. As a non-kiteboarder this didn’t really turn out to be a problem. For the most part kiteboarders are really down to earth, laid back individuals so meeting and talking with them was a pleasure. We didn’t feel out of place at all.
We made our reservation through Hotels.com, but I regret that and wish I had made the reservations directly through Lisa via email. When you book online, you only have access to the private apartment rooms. By emailing Lisa, you can request to stay in the guest house or honeymoon suite. They also have a website (casaviento.net) that I recommend looking at.
