For the second half of our March break trip we decided to experience the downtown scene. The first half was out at Villa Blanca (see review under this name). Anyhow, it was great to experience the downtown scene for 3 nights and four days. This hotel is in an excellent location to everything. If you have teenagers and you can send them off to McDonald's which is pretty much next store. The only draw back is the pool. We spend most of our days snorkelling out at Corona Beach and doing other things out of the downtown area.

Early morning is very relaxing you can watch the cruise ships come in and dump out the "boat people" day after day. It is quite amazing to see. I would recommend an ocean view for two reasons. At night the airconditioning is very quiet and excellent and there really isn't a lot of noise at night. The cruise boats leave either at 6:00 pm or at the latest there was a cruise ship going back to Tampa with college students at 10:00 pm. Big deal. Everything is within walking distance.

My husband would get up early before the heat and walk around town seeing the "real Cozumel" dogs and roosters crowing and barking and kids going off to school. Cabs are everywhere. You can take a cab out to any of the snorkelling beaches from downtown - stop back at Papa Hog's Restaurant for happy hour and watch the sun set.

For those people who think the downtown is noisy it is during the day but if you are a people watcher it is a real experience. You get the opportunity to see how a village/town wakes up and goes to bed. Entire Mexican famlies on scooters, pelguins diving for fish, local kids swimming in the cleanest port water I have seen, the local Volkswagen dealer leading a procession of 5 new car models and handing out flyers to interested consumers - what a marketing idea! College students in huge packs roaming up and down the main street and the best event is the downtown square where they have entertainment in the evenings (check with your hotel) you can listen to beautiful guitars, watch well behaved Mexican children with their grandparents in their fancy clothes and shiny shoes.

Hotel Amenities and Service
Hotel has a cool entrance right off the plaza with a guard there at all times. We barely saw any other guests - it was very quiet. Beautiful tasteful decor. Our oceanview room was very nice - my son like the satellite tv for late night movie watching. Air conditioning was awesome after a long day at the beach the room was ice cold. Good fridge for snacks, beer and water. Cool hanging chair on balcony that our son enjoyed immensely. Staff were wonderful - continental breakfast delivered when you want it (just let them know). We bought yougurt and cheese for our protein breakfast to go with the buns, juice and coffee. Wished the beds were queen size or one queen and one double or single. Bathroom was nice - shower was good - again not the water pressure of a Marriott because it isn't a Marriott.

We would recommend this hotel to others - however I wouldn't spend the entire week of a one week vacation. Perhaps 2-3 nights.

I stayed at Vista del Mar for a week in November.

Oscar, the manager was great and I really liked the property. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished with the necessities and I don't think you can expect more for the price. I don't think the room was noisy, but I asked for one on one of the top floors in order to avoid noise. The bathroom was a bit small and I wish there'd been some more space to dry off my scuba equipment, but the shower was great!! (Very important for a diver.)

I dove with Aldora divers, which are expensive but make up for it by having excellent service. The diving is good, but not fantastic in my view. I also dove on Cozumel's "wild side" since there was a storm closing the port on the normal side.

I can't say I liked Cozumel very much. It's too touristy and too developed with cruise ship tourists ruining the poor island. If you are a diver I can understand going there, but I've had better dives other places in the Caribbean and don't think I'll be coming back soon.

(A tip if there's a storm preventing you from diving on Cozumel. Take the ferry over to the mainland and go diving in the freshwater caves there. The visibility is easily 300 feet, it's spectacular!)

  • Liked — Nice rooms for the price
  • Disliked — The steps up to the room carrying tons of luggage

We just returned from a stay for 3 nights at Vista del Mar. The location was convenient (right in town), the room was clean and AC worked and the staff was very friendly. The only things that bothered us were:
a) we couldn't control the AC temp on our own, the employees had to come in and change it and as soon as the maids came in and cleaned, they would turn it back up (probably to save money), so when we returned from a long (hot) day the room was pretty stuffy.
b) we think there may have been a touch of mold, as my fiance's allergies kicked in the minute we stepped in. For allergy sufferers, it could cause some discomfort.
c) the "breakfast" was just some cold rolls, juice and coffee. I think its misleading (on Travelocity at least) to say they serve breakfast, when in fact it is continental and nothing more. I am accustomed in Mexico when they say "breakfast" they mean at least fresh fruit, yogurt, toast and coffee.
d) The "Ocean View" rooms are noisy and not worth the extra money, in contrast with some traveler's reviews. While the view is ok, (if you like watching enormous cruise ships pull in and dock), the road is REALLY noisy. I would most definitely get the regular room next time.
e) their pool is cold.
All in all, I'd stay there again as long as our room wasn't moldy because the location is good, the price is good and the staff is great.

The rooms at Vista del Mar are very comfortable, including the beds, bathroom, and especially the chair inside with some sort of nylon netting. For the money, it's a really nice hotel. Fridge, TV, liter of bottled water left in room everyday, very clean, and good, quiet A/C. Spend the extra $10/night for an ocean view and a lovely ocean breeze.

The biggest problem is the location. It's near the cruise ship docks, so every morning thousands of people stream off the boats, crowding shops on the riverfront. The good news is that they are all gone by 6 pm, so the town quiets down significantly. On Sundays there are fewer or NO ships, so try to go then and plan in-town activities for that day.

I would recommend this hotel for a shorter stay. If you want a more relaxing place, look outside town.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. I thought the accomodations were fine but nothing to rave about. They have a pool but it is very small and not in a relaxing environment. They try to go the extra mile with the welcome cocktail and the morning coffee and juice brought to your room. It is a fine hotel for the budget traveler looking for a decent place to stay in town. But, when I was there, I didn't want to spend time at the hotel, it wasn't comfortable to me.
