For the second half of our March break trip we decided to experience the downtown scene. The first half was out at Villa Blanca (see review under this name). Anyhow, it was great to experience the downtown scene for 3 nights and four days. This hotel is in an excellent location to everything. If you have teenagers and you can send them off to McDonald's which is pretty much next store. The only draw back is the pool. We spend most of our days snorkelling out at Corona Beach and doing other things out of the downtown area.
Early morning is very relaxing you can watch the cruise ships come in and dump out the "boat people" day after day. It is quite amazing to see. I would recommend an ocean view for two reasons. At night the airconditioning is very quiet and excellent and there really isn't a lot of noise at night. The cruise boats leave either at 6:00 pm or at the latest there was a cruise ship going back to Tampa with college students at 10:00 pm. Big deal. Everything is within walking distance.
My husband would get up early before the heat and walk around town seeing the "real Cozumel" dogs and roosters crowing and barking and kids going off to school. Cabs are everywhere. You can take a cab out to any of the snorkelling beaches from downtown - stop back at Papa Hog's Restaurant for happy hour and watch the sun set.
For those people who think the downtown is noisy it is during the day but if you are a people watcher it is a real experience. You get the opportunity to see how a village/town wakes up and goes to bed. Entire Mexican famlies on scooters, pelguins diving for fish, local kids swimming in the cleanest port water I have seen, the local Volkswagen dealer leading a procession of 5 new car models and handing out flyers to interested consumers - what a marketing idea! College students in huge packs roaming up and down the main street and the best event is the downtown square where they have entertainment in the evenings (check with your hotel) you can listen to beautiful guitars, watch well behaved Mexican children with their grandparents in their fancy clothes and shiny shoes.
Hotel Amenities and Service
Hotel has a cool entrance right off the plaza with a guard there at all times. We barely saw any other guests - it was very quiet. Beautiful tasteful decor. Our oceanview room was very nice - my son like the satellite tv for late night movie watching. Air conditioning was awesome after a long day at the beach the room was ice cold. Good fridge for snacks, beer and water. Cool hanging chair on balcony that our son enjoyed immensely. Staff were wonderful - continental breakfast delivered when you want it (just let them know). We bought yougurt and cheese for our protein breakfast to go with the buns, juice and coffee. Wished the beds were queen size or one queen and one double or single. Bathroom was nice - shower was good - again not the water pressure of a Marriott because it isn't a Marriott.
We would recommend this hotel to others - however I wouldn't spend the entire week of a one week vacation. Perhaps 2-3 nights.
