Went to the Melia March 20 thru 28th, 2003. Booked this hotel after much research online and reading many reviews from various sources. There were many to choose from in the price range we were looking for. We went with reasonable expectations and were very happy with our choice. The resort is an AI, midsize on the North end of the island about 4 miles from Downtown. Like most of the resorts the check in time is about 3 or 4, we arrived about 12:00 noon and were told by the conceirge that it would be a couple of hours before any rooms would be ready but were welcome to use the courtesy room to change into some cooler clothes and go have lunch. He said to check back with him in an hour or two to see if he had a room available. That's what we did and after lunch we checked at the desk and had a room right then. We were on the 8th floor of the tower, junior suite, oceanview. The room was large with King-sized bed, sitting area with a sleeper sofa, coffee table and dining table with two chairs. Armoir w/T.V., alarm clock, small closet for hanging clothes and shelves with a mini safe for locking up valuables. The bath was pretty large, all marble, vanity, tub and a great shower big enough for two with plenty of hot water and pressure. We had a balcony with a small table and 2 chairs and a glass wall to make it possible to enjoy the beautiful view. The bed was rock hard as you read about all, but otherwise it was a very nice room. The service at the hotel is very good overall but I want to mention a few special things. One is the maid service, we were listed as honeymooners even though our travel agent failed after asking three times to book us that way. We asked at the beginning to have the room made up every day at about 2 pm., as we wanted to sleep in and have breakfast in bed and generally take our sweet time getting around. They only came early twice (around 10:00 am) during our 8 days there. But when we would return to our room each day it was spotlessly clean, we had extra bottleeft for us. Fresh flower petals on the bed or towels designed into kissing swans or linen fans with tissue made roses on the pillows. We were so impressed and pleased that we gave a few dollars tip to them when we ran into them a few times. The ladies at the front desk were always pleasant and very helpful. Like all AI's you have to book seating in the specialty restaurants during certain times of the day but on both occasions that we checked after booking was supposedly closed they checked for availability and booked us anyway. One restaurant is gourmet and very good, the other is an outside grille (the snack-bar during the day) and is o.k. The main restaurant is the usual buffet type and the food is o.k., the made to order omelet grill at breakfast was very good. Desserts are apparantly not a big part of the mexican cuisine because they are HORRIBLE! They had several beautiful looking cakes, tarts and custards with every meal but they had little flavor and seemed to have had a glass of water poured over each. When you would cut into them they were completely soggy. We gave up after trying a couple of days. The best part of the buffet besides breakfast was the service! Very quick, helpful and friendly. The waiter that we really enjoyed was ESTOBAN, he always went out of his way to remember our names, get anything we wanted and has a genuine smile. We had no problems with flies or mesquito's like alot of the resorts on the south end. The beach was very nice, the location was great for the view, we could watch the cruise ships go out at night when they are lighted and the taxi ride to town was only $4.50 american. We rented a car from LESS PAY (very friendly service) on the south end of downtown for $45.00 per day including insurance and drove to the EAST SIDE of the Island for the best beach and dinner (at Coconuts) that we had during the trip. We had a great time and would recommend this resort to anyone.
