Just returned from Cozumel. Our first time back since the hurricane. The Melia hotel was very nice. We had no Moldy room problelms. I took Lysol spray but never needed it. We were supposed to get a King sized bed but none were available. The hotel did offer to change us the next day if one became available. We decided to stick with the two full beds. No complaints at all about the room, lots of hot water. Quiet Gardenview....slept very soundly.
BEACH: A little rocky, I reccommend surf shoes. It can be cloudy with seaweed if the winds are blowing in. One day the water was very brown with seaweed, but the winds shifted and it was crystal clear the rest of the week. We were stopped from going into the hotel next door. Their guard reminded us it was private property and we could not proceed further. We did swim in front of the houses next door. You can walk north up the beach, however be careful. I am stunned by the amount of trash that is all over the beaches and shorelines of Cozumel. All around the island the beaches are incredibly littered.
FOOD: Ate once at the Pariaso (reservation needed) restaurant.
Then promptly went back to the buffet. The food in the Pariaso was bland, tasteless, a poor attempt at gourmet. The buffet was always different, Breakfast was great...servers were excellent. The bar drinks were good, but steer clear of the daquiri's...made with a way too sweet mix and were undrinkable.
STAFF: the staff of the hotel was friendly and always looking for anyway to help you. We were not bothered by Time share people simply because We made it clear on the first day we were not interested. The guide gave us a tour of the hotel, got us drinks and never mentioned the time share issue. The maids did a great job of keeping us supplied with water and would hand us extra bottles if we asked as we left the room.
THE ISLAND: Steer clear of downtown while the cruise ships are in. Go into town after 4PM. Be aware of the parking areas and do not park in no parking zones (red painted curbs) We came about 30 seconds from being towed by the policia's new tow truck. Your best deals are off the main drag and in the shops away from the Cruise ship compensated stores. Head back a block into the square and meet the real shop keepers of Cozumel. Better prices and different stuff.
TOURS: We rented a car for the week and We reccommend you do the same for a least a day or two. A MUST DO..especially on Sunday when the ships aren't in is PUNTA SUR national park. It is the best snorkling on the island.....you'll pay $10.00 to get into the park but it is worth it. Bring your own gear. Kick out to the last platform and just float down from buoy to buoy to the platform and then kick back to shore. AMAZING REEF. Included for you 10 bucks is a boat tour of the Mangroves and a visit to the museum. This by far was our best day.. Remember on Sunday the crazy cruisers aren't around so that's the day to go. Check out the two gigantic hogs who live at the Jamaiccan bar near the entrance to the park. They make for great pictures.
We booked our trip thru BOOKIT.com and will not use them again. If you have a problem it takes too long to resolve it over the phone( 45 minutes on hold) and they don't email or communicate well over the net.
I reccommend the melia for a nice quiet vacation. The kids pool is seperate from the adults so it's good for everyone. We were not bothered at all with children. Always plenty of chairs on the beach. No early morning chair saving needed here. Happy, fast bartenders. Take a large thermal mug for your drinks for less trips to the bar.
I wish were back there in Cozumel at the Melia napping in the hammocks.
