We went to The Melia Cozumel just after hurricane Emily hit Cozumel and the Yucatan in 2005. We went July 24 and stayed a week. We were booked to arrive the day the hurricane hit, however the staff was excellent with allowing us to rebook for later. Unfortunately, Priceline and US air were very difficult in rebooking, they actually never cancelled the flight which was ordered to turn around 30 minutes prior to landing because of the hurricane watch finally turning into a warning. my advice---use a travel agent like Carlson Wagonlit, its free and they take care of all the nonsense for you. We rebooked and flew from milwaukee to philly and on to cozumel directly to skip the ferry from cancun.
We arrived expecting the worst. Although the veggitation hadn't grown back completely, the island was in decent condition and people were working very hard to clean up. The hotel was in decent shape, some uprooted trees were the most obvious, but even broken windows had been replaced. The saddest part was that the structure over the adult pool bar had collapsed into the pool causeing them to have to rebuild and retile a large area. They finally reopened it the last day we were there. The Ocean water was murkey but we assumed that was hurricane related.
Upon our arrival we checked into our room which was accidently rebooked as 2 double beds and it was overlooking the garden, or the la iguanna grill. We decided to upgrade to the oceanview in the tower. For an extra 150 dollars, it was worth it a thousand times over, because even though we were only in the room a little bit, it was nice to have in the evening and late at night as you could see the lights from cancun.
This place is couples friendly. The first night we were there right before dinner at the Iguana My boyfriend took me out on the balcony overlooking the ocean at sunset and joked about it being to perfect place to propose to me. I laughed until he got down on one knee and proposed to me. LAter that night the entire lobby bar toasted to us and we finished it off with a candlelight dinner at the iguana next to the fishtank. It was everything I could have hoped for.
As far as the room it always seemed damp but very cool. The bathroom was a beautiful brown marble with a nice sized shower and portable shower head. The room was very spacious and our housekeeper left us little towel and flower animals on the bed every morning. She kept our room very clean and always stocked with fresh towels.
As far as food The buffet was alright, the Grill was pretty good for "all inclusive" dining, and the snack bar was convenient for after swiming snacks although most of the food was 500+ in calories. The activities are mostly for kids, we never went to a show but we did participate in casino night and at the end one of the "dealers" gave me and entire case of chips which got us a free dinner at Carlos and Charlies which we didn;t use but gave to another nice couple that we met there.
ADVICE
---It is a long trip up stairs if u forget something in the room so keep a tote bag with the essentials and an extra room key in it.
---if u want a decent seat at the pool reserve it with a towl early and noone will touch it, or it will be slim pickins later.
---MAke reservations for the Grille every morning, dont forget because they do book up pretty quickly.
---bring mosquito repellent, especially for walking to the grill at night or being by the beach or you will be eaten alive.
----TIP YOUR BARTENDER!!! bring some singles with you. who cares that the booze is included with your package, those people live on pennies and a very friendly regardless of whether or not you tip them, and believe me, if you tip them they will ensure you have an unforgettable experience.
---Phillipe (both of them) is a wonderful bartender and we enjoyed spending the week with his service. remember "una tequilla mas!" and try a "dirty monkey" it tastes like a chocolate covered banana
---use strong sunblock if u camp at the pool bar, we got pretty drunk and forgot to put more on and ended up frying the last day of our trip.
---Don't count on the "free snorkeling" stuff because the guys that run the stand are pretty nasty (I think they are subcontracted) and they will scam u into paying them for it, and it is hardly ever available. Buy stuff before the trip, you will get your moneys worth if you go to the other side of the pier or on excursions. We waited until we got there and spent 150 in the shops on goggles, fins, and snorkle tubes for 2 people and we even got the low end stuff. Also, underwater cameras are like $9 in the states as opposed to $25 in the shops, so stock up prior to coming.
---GO INTO TOWN. its 5 dollars for a cab, which is nothing. We ate at a restraunt that was top notch and paid 18 dollars for a 10 oz fillet and lobster tail- surf and turf, well worth the trip.
---Don't expect to swim on the hotel grounds in the ocean. The pier creates a pocket for sea weed to live in. they sweep the beach every day but that is too keep the sand clean. it doesnt help the water. Next door they dont mind at all if you swim out, so go for it. its crystal clear there and u can see lots of fish the farther down you go..
---We had little expectation going in and it exceeded everything I could have hoped for for what we paid. If you are expecting a 5* hotel then this isn't for you, however we only paid 2k for both of us and it was money well spent. Like I said if you go in expecting a culinary delight for food you will be sorely dissapointed.
---Do the snorkeling excursions, we had to pay but they picked us up at the hotel and gave us tequilla shots on the way back and played music, it was a good time. I"m not sure that the snuba is really worth it, but we didnt try it.
In closing, we had so much fun and the people were amazing and we had a blast. The price was VERY reasonable and the property was very nice. We will definately return in the future.
