As in any vacation, there are pros and cons. What the potential vacationer should discern is which features and positives/negatives are most important to them. My daughter (20) and I traveled together to Cozumel to stay at the Melia and the below list is seperated into what we considered to be the pros and cons of our stay:
PROS: Very, very friendly staff. I can't say enough about how well we were treated. I felt like a queen. Whatever we needed was provided to us. One evening my daughter wanted to listen and dance to rap music. The hotel staff opened the Fantasia Club stage, bar and music. They provided a DJ and bartender and there were only about 8 of us who moved from the main lounge to enjoy a little bit different atmoshphere. The Casino Night was a lot of fun. Again, the staff was incredible and fun while we played roulette and blackjack. It was free to play and if you won enough chips, you could buy something. We enjoyed the entertainment. The dancers who were part of the hotel staff were very talented in our view. We really enjoyed the shows. I didn't expect a Vegas show but the costumes and dancing were very entertaining.
Faustino was our Funjet rep. He made sure we knew everything we needed to know so the stress was off. We booked our Parasailing through Faustino. It didn't cost anymore but we had much better equipment (something I felt was important as I watched my daughter fly up over the ocean!) than some of the other boats we had seen. We also booked our Tulume Ruins trip through Faustino. He made a list for us of what we needed to take with us! Funjet reps were waiting for us at each place we needed to change transportation so there were no worries. Tulume Express was long enough in the heat. We would have died if we had done the all-day thing at Tulume.
Our rooms were always cleaned well. Our room was nicely decorated and updated. Very nice flooring and countertops. The buffet food was adequate. Breakfast was the best. The onion rings, hamburgers, and nachos were really tasty, also. The gourmet restaurant was nice but being the fast food junkies we are, we enjoyed the grill the best.
CONS: The beach was basically unswimmable in our view. I don't like to swim in seaweed so we had to go the the next door beach. While sitting on a lounge chair at the next door beach, I was asked (politely) to not use their chairs. While the other beach was close, by the time we got there in the heat, our frozen drinks were melted. If the water was cleaner, my review would go to above average.
Our room was always damp but from speaking to tourists at other hotels, all the hotel rooms were damp. There was mold on our ceiling. If you can't keep the mold off, you should at least paint the ceilings a dark color so I can't see it! Our room also had a dank, musty smell to it.
The buffet room was so hot that we had to look for a fan to keep us cooled off while we ate. Air conditioning would have been nice for those who wanted to get "away" from the elements and relax while we ate.
In our view, the pros far outweighed the cons and we had a blast at the Melia. We would like to see the beach get cleaned up or the pier get taken out for us to return to the Melia Cozumel. I would definitely try their hotels in other cities because of the excellent staff.
