As in any vacation, there are pros and cons. What the potential vacationer should discern is which features and positives/negatives are most important to them. My daughter (20) and I traveled together to Cozumel to stay at the Melia and the below list is seperated into what we considered to be the pros and cons of our stay:

PROS: Very, very friendly staff. I can't say enough about how well we were treated. I felt like a queen. Whatever we needed was provided to us. One evening my daughter wanted to listen and dance to rap music. The hotel staff opened the Fantasia Club stage, bar and music. They provided a DJ and bartender and there were only about 8 of us who moved from the main lounge to enjoy a little bit different atmoshphere. The Casino Night was a lot of fun. Again, the staff was incredible and fun while we played roulette and blackjack. It was free to play and if you won enough chips, you could buy something. We enjoyed the entertainment. The dancers who were part of the hotel staff were very talented in our view. We really enjoyed the shows. I didn't expect a Vegas show but the costumes and dancing were very entertaining.

Faustino was our Funjet rep. He made sure we knew everything we needed to know so the stress was off. We booked our Parasailing through Faustino. It didn't cost anymore but we had much better equipment (something I felt was important as I watched my daughter fly up over the ocean!) than some of the other boats we had seen. We also booked our Tulume Ruins trip through Faustino. He made a list for us of what we needed to take with us! Funjet reps were waiting for us at each place we needed to change transportation so there were no worries. Tulume Express was long enough in the heat. We would have died if we had done the all-day thing at Tulume.

Our rooms were always cleaned well. Our room was nicely decorated and updated. Very nice flooring and countertops. The buffet food was adequate. Breakfast was the best. The onion rings, hamburgers, and nachos were really tasty, also. The gourmet restaurant was nice but being the fast food junkies we are, we enjoyed the grill the best.

CONS: The beach was basically unswimmable in our view. I don't like to swim in seaweed so we had to go the the next door beach. While sitting on a lounge chair at the next door beach, I was asked (politely) to not use their chairs. While the other beach was close, by the time we got there in the heat, our frozen drinks were melted. If the water was cleaner, my review would go to above average.

Our room was always damp but from speaking to tourists at other hotels, all the hotel rooms were damp. There was mold on our ceiling. If you can't keep the mold off, you should at least paint the ceilings a dark color so I can't see it! Our room also had a dank, musty smell to it.

The buffet room was so hot that we had to look for a fan to keep us cooled off while we ate. Air conditioning would have been nice for those who wanted to get "away" from the elements and relax while we ate.

In our view, the pros far outweighed the cons and we had a blast at the Melia. We would like to see the beach get cleaned up or the pier get taken out for us to return to the Melia Cozumel. I would definitely try their hotels in other cities because of the excellent staff.

My Husband and I stayed at the Melia June 20-27th 2005. It was our honeymoon and we stayed in a paradise suite with a jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was outside on a deck. The tub itself was not clean and we barely used it. The rooms were clean but there was nothing special about them. The food was terrible. There are three restaurants two of them require reservations and one of them has a dress code. Guys have to wear pants and a button up shirt. My Husband did not bring pants since we were going to Mexico and therefore, we never ate at that restaurant. The other sit down restaurant is outside and we got attacked by mosquitos. Not enjoyable. The third restaurant is a buffett and it is indoors without any AC. It was hot. Eating was not an enjoyable thing to do. The staff was friendly and the people were nice. But the resort is small and to leave the resort it costs money. No one swam in the water because it was brown and dirty looking. Grass was growing from the bottom of the ocean. It reminded me of a swamp. However the resort next door had water that was crystal blue and you could see the bottom of the ocean. I believe it was called the Cozumelian. We will never go back to the resort and would not recommend it to anyone. The swim up bar was the best thing about the resort but you get sick of that after a while.

We just arrived yesterday from Melia. I just have to say you get what you pay for. We were looking for a a quick not to expensive not to cheap getaway for 4th of July weekend. We were planning to book at the Cozumeleno (next door hotel), since that is where we stayed last time and we loved it, but they were all booked. We decided on Melia. This was a big mistake, I should have paid more and stayed at a better hotel. The money I would have paid extra I wouldn't of had to spend on the food eating out everyday. The food was mediocre, extremely greesy. Breakfast was always the same, lunch would very but it lacked taste. I usually would go to the snack bar and eat a burger, which was also not so good since flies were all over the place and they cooked outside. The restaurant was hot, not AC and no fans. We ate dinner once (or semi ate) and it was awful. We didn't even bother eating at the reservations restaurant. As for the room, it was extremely humid and it spelled like sewage by our bathrooms. Our shower water didn't work on morning and when we called all they said was they were working on it. It turned on 2 hours later, but they didn't bother to let us know. The beach was filled wth seaweed, but I don't think that was their fault, there was pier that was built next door that prevent all the seaweed to travel with the current. YOu can always go swim next door, beach is awsome, looks like a pool. (like I said tried to book that hotel, but it was full). I can't complain about the friendliness of the staff, they were really nice, except at check in. The receptionist tried to get us to fill out this card (I think it was for hotel points) and he would try to get our room before 3 when we said, no, he said well then you may I have to wait until 4 because that's when check in is. So we ended having to fill it out because it was so humid in the restaurants to eat.
Another problem (MISQUITOS) and the refridgerator was never restocked.
There were plenty of chairs on the beach but that was because not many people would get into the beach.
Overall, I would not go back to this hotel and would recommend it only if your there to drink and not care what the food tastes like.

We stayed here in July 2002. We endured this place for two nights before we called the travel agency that booked our stay and insisted on another hotel.

Ever leave your clothes in the washer (post-washing) by accident for two weeks? Okay, I haven't either, but imagine an entire room smelling like this--the sheets reeked of mold. The furniture was falling apart.

Mosquitoes were everywhere. Management wouldn't turn on the fans in the restaurants to help alleviate this.

If you eat the food in the restaurant, expect to know the decor--or lack thereof--in the bathroom very, very well.

I had to take a taxi to a neighboring hotel in order to get phone cards with which to change hotels--Management at this hotel informed me that a phone call to the US would cost $10 per minute!!!

My fondest memory of this place is seeing it in the taxi's rear-view mirror as we were on our way to a much better hotel.

We stayed at the Melia June 22-25 and had a great time. We would book another trip there no problem.

The entire staff was very friendly, we were upgraded to a partial ocean view (See PIC) and the room was great, yes we were on the 4th floor and had to take the stairs but it was well worth it. The room was very clean and well maintained, NO smells.

The pools are great, and the bars even better. the drinks were made to order, strong or weaker if you liked. No tipping was needed however I did some since I wanted to show my appreciation.

We never ate at any of the resturants, we did the buffet. Breakfast and lunch were the best and it was AVERAGE to ABOVE Average, some really good items and some I stayed away from but I do the same thing at ANY buffet I go to. this one was like any other full buffet. Air Conditioning would have been nice. We did the Jeep tour and it was great..
