My husband and I visited Cozumel in late April. It's our second time in Cozumel. Our favorite hotel remains the Grand Occidental (and El Presidente, but expensive). However, we liked the location of the Melia a little better. It was only a $5 cab ride into town. We found a really cheap deal for the Melia so we didn't feel guilty spending money in town for food. Lobster House, Aquaria and Guidos are great restaurants in town. The hotel was clean and rooms decent size. The food was not awful, but not great. The buffet was fair (breakfast was the best meal). The beach side grill is the best place to eat for lunch. The dressier restaurant was not good. The beach and pool areas were pleasant and the drinks plenty (didn't have a problem with watered down drinks as other reviews stated). The beach had lots of seaweed, but was cleaned up every morning. The El Cozumeleno has better water and beach and is right down from the Melia. I would recommend staying here should you want an all inclusive but do not want to feel guilty about venturing into town to eat. It was a good value for the money.

Just returned from Cozumel and loved the Melia. Charming and serene. Enjoyed the food and the service at this all inclusive resort. The menu changed every day for breakfast lunch and dinner. Freshest seafood and great desserts. Very family oriented with two pools. One is the adult only pool with a swim up bar while the other is filled with kids activities. There is a nightly show that's definitely worth checking out, daily beach volleyball, and the free tour of the nearby golfcourse is a good little getaway. Free rental of kyaks and snorkel gear. The beach is very close but a little bit dirty and neighbor hotel (El Cozumeleno) has a better beach and clearer water for snorkeling. You can always just walk over. The rooms are clean but the humidity is very high and we felt it in the room. The trip into town is about 5 bucks if you want to shop. The airport is very close but we never heard any planes. We never had all inclusive before and really enjoyed not having to carry money around or filling out receipts with our room number. Overall a great experience.

Wow! Amazing.. My husband and I stayed for a week at the Melia to celebrate our honeymoon/1 year anniversary! We recieved a free upgrade to a junior suite because it was our honeymoon! We were on the eighth floor overlooking the water. The view was spectacular. Our food at the melia was very good! No complaints here. The beach was beautiful, however the seagrass rumors were true....so we trotted down to the other beach and it was beautiful. It was not a big deal.Between the service, the food ,the room and the scenery,we'll say our only complaint to be seagrass (which wasn't a big deal!) We had lots of fun. We didn't go on any excursions because another couple we met went on every excursion and came back dissapointed from every one! We kept waiting for them to come back with some good news...they never did-we told them they saved us alot of money. Honestly there was enough entertainment, feasting, drinking and relaxing that the only place my husband and I went was to town one morning early for souveniers and a horse ride.(Horse ride was nice along the beach, but in the woods it was very dirty, alot of garbage. Would I do that again, yes because it was relaxing and nice to ride a horse since I never do that) We had plenty to do at our resort! The people were very friendly and helpful. We tipped our maids 2 dollars everyday and they took very good care of us-with towels & filling our fridge for us with pop and beer. Mary who was on the resort daily-took our pic 3x and made 8 x 10's for us to take back home with us for 10 dollars. She did awesome on them and she was a real sweetheart . The bartenders were great....no holding back on the liquor! Also 2 of our favorite bartenders were Julio and Philipe !!!Philipe never made us wait and Julio was doing two for one! Thats 2 drinks for one kiss on the cheek! Another bartender over by the hammocks caught us nappin one night for 1 1/2 hours....the next day we came by and he noticed us and said hey! Somebodys in your hammock!!!All in all..we had the most awesome vacation in our lives...we wouldn't trade the memories for anything!

Fabulous! And nothing less!
When my father passed away at Christmas he said, "I wish I could give my family one more vacation." In his memory I brought my family of eight to the Melia, hoping it would be good. It wasn't good - it was outstanding! We loved the wind surfing, kayaking, and sail boating. My son and daughter-in-law who were training for a triatholon, swam laps in the ocean, raced up and down the isolated beach, and biked into town. We all enjoyed playing tennis and relaxing in the spa. By far the favorite activity was the snorkeling. What a color feast for our eyes. Seeing an eagle sting ray and the parrot fish were especially exciting! Speaking of feasts, we couldn't wait for the buffets each day. The variety was endless, the presentation delightful, and the flavors sumptuous. In the evenings we enjoyed the professional dance performances. The Mexican night was our favorite. Was my father's wish granted? I'd say, "A fabuous five star YES"!

This place was everything I wanted from my vacation. On the positive side was the location, service, and the hospitality. On the negative side, not too much to report although there is always room for improvement.
We stayed in the Junior suites, the tall building, overlooking the waters toward Playa Del Carmen. The view was excellent. The rooms were made spotless daily with many flower arrangements left as a little surprise for when we got back to the room. The only thing I can say that could be improved were the mattresses as they were a little too hard for my liking.
As far as the location, the hotel is the last resort north of town. To me this keeps tourist traffic and local vendors away and adds to the peacefulness of the place. The cab rides were about $7-8 US to downtown shops and restaraunts. I did have a rental car as I like to be able to come and go as I please and I like to explore. The rental car also afforded me the ability to drive to the southern part of the island to dive without taking a long boat trip to Palancar, (less crowded boats).
Back to the resort: The hospitality was great. Not just from the people at the resort, but all over the island. The Mexicans of Cozumel made us feel welcome. The servers in the restaraunts catered to all of our requests. When we asked for a specific after dinner liquer, they went and found it for us. When I asked for espresso, they made it for me. They took the time to talk to us about the history and customs of the island and always smiled. This was just great.
One of the best parts of the day was the late afternoon gatherings at the pool bar. Please note that the main pool is for adults only as there was a second pool for kids and family. My kind of place. Noisy adults are somehow not as annoying to me as noisy kids. LOL The bartenders were hard working and did a good job keeping up with drink request as there were many at times.
I can't complain about the beach. No it was not perfect but was more than adequate. I read some reviews that complained of seaweed and jellyfish. Well, we had both for several days. A resort can do nothing about this! This is mother natures doing and nothing else. As seeweed washed ashore, the resort did their best to clean it up. That is all I could ask. Halfway through our stay, the winds changed and the weeds and jellies were gone.
Trying not to ramble, in summary I would say that I would definitely stay here again. The price was right. I think I paid $1350 for 2 for 7 nights and this was a good value. Yes, there is room for improvement and I think Melia knows that and cares and this place should only get better.
A little side note, you will get tired of the buffet food as it does get somewhat repetitive, goes with the territory of an all inclusive. Go downtown and try Pancho's Backyard. This restaraunt was fantastic. A 9 out of 10. Hope this helps. Bob
