We spent Aug. 14-21st, 2004 at the Melia. We enjoyed a gorgeous view 7th floor in the tower (Junior Suite was spacious and clean) of the ocean and adult pool. Snorkeling was a cinch next door beyond the pier not a far walk because water was not clear in front of the Melia. Saw an alligator there one night!
Drinks were not watered down and top-shelf liquor if you choose. Service was friendly and ever-present (they expect a tip ). My major complaints are as follows: food is unappetizingly prepared ( a turn-off after day 2); of the three restaurants only 1 was air-conditioned(the humidity and heat and mosquitoes were thick-if going in summer repellant is mandatory!); food in "Gourmet" restaurant, El PARAISO, was pitiful-- it hovers above a pond which is a breeding pit for mosquitoes; nothing was cold enough- you could POUR the Yoplait yogurt over the tasteless "fresh" fruit. In addition, I suspect that many of the meats prepared for the buffet were recycled from the day before and flies were everywhere in this UNairconditioned buffet room. The Melia needs to hire a food consultant for an over-haul.
It's a shame because the hotel accomodations were great, service wonderful, snorkling and scuba spectacular (my first off shore snorkeling showed me an octopus!), the water-windex blue and turquoise.
We road the horses (across the street) through a jungle and along the beach for $20.00; rented a 1973 yellow VW convertible to explore the other side of island (great body surfing and very undeveloped) and had a great massage at the Melia (1 hr.-$60.00). I would go back to Cozumel but not stay at the Melia until I can be assured that the quality of the food has improved dramatically and at least one other restaurant has been air-conditioned.
