We just returned from the Melia. July 18-23, 2004. I really liked the Mexican people. They are warm, friendly and mild mannered. Unlike what I'd heard about other islands where they hassle you.
The exterior of Melia was disappointing. It reminded me of Disney's All Star Resorts. The interior is nice, but for some reason our room was damp. Alot of reviewers mentioned flies, but I guess that's to be expected since 2 of the restaurants are open to the outside with beautiful views of the beach and palm trees. I would definitely recommend everyone bring bug repellent. Mosquitoes are a problem. The food was fair, but you always found somethings that you liked. I didn't expect to like the shows, but I did enjoy them a lot.
The taxis charged us $7 to go to town.
The water is murky green like in Florida in front of this hotel but the water is less rocky also. The sand gets turned up with each wave. Further down in front of the other hotels the water was a beautiful blue but it was rocky and had a lot of shells.
Overall an island paradise but I liked Cancun better for its beautiful rockless beaches and easy transportation. We got the most beautiful pictures. The best souvenir.

7 day stay end of July. At first I was a little concerned as I was unhappy with the A/C in my room. I got moved to a room that had better A/C. The Jr. Suite, when booked in advance, was a great choice.
The staff was pleasant. Every time I go to Mexico communication can be tough, this was however one of the better locations for communication.
The main restraunt- buffet- is in need of A/C and the Grill is outside, so if you went at dusk OFF was recommended. The Grill and the Gourmet restraunt was great food. Unforunately the Gourmet restraunt had A/C problems, but it has A/C....
The drinks were good because the liquor was good. International is sooo much better than domestic (unless you are familiar with the Mexico brands)! The bartenders were great too.
It was only $5 for taxi to the Aqua Safari Dive Shop. The hotels shop is the Aquaworld. It god mixed reviews but they do offer Discovery Scuba.
The beach was O.K., the water was unclear. Some others noted this but mistook the other hotel as improving there water due to pier. That pier is what hurts the Melia water! It blocks the flow of water....
Go and enjoy, it may not be perfect but it is GOOD!

Well before I went on this vacation I read every single review. I prepared myself for the worst but I was still hoping for the best. I think my experience falls somewhere in the middle. First I'll start with some of the positive qualities of the hotel. The room was very large and clean. There was kind of a funky smell. It got better as the week went on and we got used to it. The nightly shows were awesome. A couple of times I laughed so hard I started to cry. Definetly go to the shows, they were great. The fine dining restaurant at the hotel had really great food. Our captian was extremely nice and the waiters went out of there way to make your experience superb. The alcoholic drinks were great too. Now here are some of the negatives. First, the food at the buffet and the grill was just plain gross. The breakfast buffet was tolerable but the afternoon and evening buffet was horrible. There were so many flies and they were landing in all of the food. I just couldn't bring myself to eat it. The grill was just as bad. One day I went to get a hamburger and there were so many flies. They were all over the food. I ate at Mc Donalds three times while I was there because the food was so bad. Believe it or not this is the first vaction that I actually lost weight on because I couldn't eat the food. The second problem was the ocean in front of the hotel. It seriously looked like Jersey water. If you want to go swimming walk the two minutes to the hotel next door. The water in front of the other hotel is beautiful. The other hotel actually built a long pier and this pier is what makes the difference in the water quality. In front of the other hotel the water is blue and calm, the water on the melia side is dark and rough. It's ok to walk down to the beach next door, it's a public beach you just can't use the other hotels chairs. I liked the island but I don't think I would ever go back to the Melia. For all the money you pay, you want your vacation to be close to perfect. The Melia could only offer me mediocrity.

We went to Cozumel as part of our honeymoon vacation. We decided to book the Melia because of the package price at the travel agency. Although we loved the island, we were disappointed with the restaurant's food quality and cleanlines. The food didn't taste very good, and some of the options in their buffet looked questionable. They have a "snack" restaurant where it's guaranteed you'll have flies around you throughout your whole meal. The silverware and plates were spotted with food. The beach is not very clean; a lot of weeds and rocks. However, the beach next door is beautiful. The pool for the adults is tiny, and their activities pool was dirty. We got there early one morning and there were dead bugs floating around; not sure they cleaned it the night before. The only nice thing was our room. It was very spacious, clean, and had a great view. But we would definitely not go back.

Just took our vacation on the 1st thru the 7th of July, Had a fantastic time and wanted to share the good and the bad with everyone. Having read this web site from begining to end I wanted to add the things I was looking for BEFORE my vacation began.
Lets start by saying that if you fly into cancun you are going to save alot of flight dollars, but expect to spend your day flying and traveling by bus, taxi and water taxi. We left phoenix at 9 am and got to our motel at 10 pm. we did however have a 3 hour wait at the airport for customs and I was told this is very rare. the bus from the airport is 7 dollars and a taxi is about 65 dollars. We took the bus and it was air conditioned and a nice ride. it is found WAY to the right end of the airport and you will be approached by many a person between getting off the plane and getting to the bus. All I can say is learn to say "no thank you" and keep walking!
Once we got off the bus we asked which direction to get to the ferry to cozumel , it is easy walking distance and there are booths set up everywhere to buy a ticket for the trip. We payed 18 dollarss per person for a round trip ticket. and I cant say one company was better than the next so choose either one. The ferrys come hourly until about 10 pm.
Once you are off the ferry you take a very short walk to town and there are abundance of taxi's waiting for you. It was 5 dollars from town to the MELIA Resort where we were staying. I did talkto some folks that were staying at the iberostar and it was 15 dollars each way for them. so when you book a resort be sure and see how far from town you are if taxi's will be used alot. we did confirm the price each time we entered a taxi.
We stayed at the melia all inclusive resort. asked for a complimentary upgrade to ocean view and got it. I have nothing but good to say about our resort. easy check in(even late at night). The restaurant was still open so got to finally eat something. and the food was good. I can only say that the only way to go is an all inclusive. trust me you drink alot of fluid in that heat and its all free. The one thing I would do different is bring LOTS of one dollar bills! you use them up for tipping maids, bartenders and taxi's but it makes your visit much nicer! The maid made us a nice "towel" design each morning on our bed. and when asked left us plenty of bottled water each morning. The bartender Louis never let our drinks go empty and was a very hard worker. tipping goes a long way in mexico please dont forget that! We did rent a charter boat for a day of fishing from the office in the hotel lobby but do check with more than one, the prices are different at each booth. be sure and ask if it includes everything for the trip. some charge additional for bait, etc and you are expected to tip them as well.
There are plenty of beaches to snorkel in and we had to walk down about 100 feet from the melia to snorkel in clear blue water. not a big issue though. I was told by other visitors at other resorts that they only got domestic drinks. where at the melia you asked for ANY drink and you got it.
Things are not as cheap as they used to be in mexico you can barter at some of the shops but alot of them have set prices and they are close to american price. All in all had a great time, want to go back in December and will stay at the Melia again. What would I do different? If I have enough money I will fly into cozuemel, I will bring 500.00 worth of $1 and $5 bills. o and bring your own snorkel gear! Have Fun and hope to see ya there!!!! Email me with any Questions, It sends me back to my Vacation each time !
