I like a lot of you have been glued to the reviews about Melia Cozumel, and I admit that having read the reports I did not know what to expect from the hotel.
We travelled with First Choice Holidays and on arriving at the Airport, there is a lenghty delay in going through passport control, not what you want after a ten and half hour flight.
When you finally go through to arrivals you are met by these friendly faces asking you where you are staying and offering advice. These were not the First Choice reps but time share people, the reps are not allowed inside the building and are kept out by security. Very strange for an island who's sole income is tourisum.
We were carted off in little mini buses for a 10 minute ride to the hotel.
The hotel looked great and the lobby clean and bright and the bus boys very friendly, check in was a breeze and the best thing you don't have to pay for the use of the room safe.
The bus boy carried our bags (the wifes being very heavy) to our room on the second floor of block B.
The room smelt funny but it looked clean and tidy and the view from the balcony window, well, blue sea, golden sand and palm trees. Yes we've arrived in paradise.
Together we stepped out onto the balcony to take in the view and 50 mosquitoes flew into the room.
We knew that they had just had the rainy season, but not being niave we had checked on the interweb and they claimed that the whether would be great and free of insects and mosquitoes.
Boy were they WRONG!!!!
After spending the next hour splatting the BLOODY things against the wall, we set out to explore.
Yes the water on the beach isn't very clean but the sand is lovely and looks like it does on the pictures.
The 2 pools were great and clean and pleanty of sunbeds.
We enjoyed a drink in the beach bar and were surprise when a seond drink arrived before we'd finished our first. I thought I'm going to like this place.
The main buffet Resturant was brilliant and the service the best I have ever encountered any where in the world. The second Resturant which you have to book, was very poor. My starter of mixed warm seafood was still frozen when it arrived at the table.
After the first nights sleep my wife discovered over ten mosquito bites all over her body and I made a joke of her tasting sweet as I only had one.
I'm told were not allowed to swear on these reviews but the following morning I had upwards of twenty bites, some in places you do not wish to be bitten in as they are very scratchy.
The Mosquitoes spoilt our holiday in truth as we attempted to cover ourselves in lotions and potions in an attempt to stop from being bitten. NOTHING worked, NOTHING!!!
The time share people were ok, I did the tour and recieved a free Jeep hire car for the day. You just have to stick to your guns and say no and the end of the presentation, but they do offer some good insentives.
Again another funny thing our rep was not allowed to use the front entrance our lobby area of the hotel and she was only allowed inside the lobby if there was a problem that needed sorting out. Very strange.
It is a great hotel, with great food, brilliant service, friendly staff and ok location.
But oh those MOSQUITOES.

I have been watching all of the forums and reading the reviews for the Melia Cozumel. I started getting a little anxiousbefore we left, but by the time the trip was over, I could not wait to get home and write my review. LOTS of the reviews said "musty smell when you arrive" - HINT....TURN ON THE AC....IT WILL BE GONE IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES. The hotel is at the farthest spot to the north of the island, so there are only personal homes and dirt road to the North. Very secluded feeling. We had the best time staying at that hotel with our son (12). He played all the beach volleyball he wanted, ate still he could pop, snorkeld, walked along the beach and found shells, watched the kite boarders, etc. The activity director, Rafael, was about as cute as they come and really went out of his way to get our son to participate. Nicky really enjoyed the shows (corny, somewhat, but they entertained him). The employees were GREAT! Very attentive, courteous and just happy to make our stay there a good one. Would I go back to the Melia? Yes!!! I can't imagine that there could be a bad hotel on the island.

ok, i would like to start this review by saying if u have complained about this hotel you are an idiot, you cannot fault it!!! i read a couple of bad reviews and i was really worried, but trust me these people are wrong! and the bad reviews i have read you people should stay at home because you obvisously do not appriciate paradise!!!
anyway my review,
the staff are fantastic, the most friendly, warm people i have ever met, they will do anything for you and were very helpful.
the hotel, lovely, clean very well kept, beach and gardens were lovely!
pool bar is definatly 'living the life' with the view of the sea it was perfect!
the beach was lovely and sea was crystal clear.
this for me was the best holiday i have ever been on.
i went with my partner (now fiance, after he proposed while in cozumel) we had the best time, food and drink was lovely, i would definatly recommend the a la carte resturant, the food is very good. we also went swimming with dolphins which was amazing ,only dissapointing thing was prices for photos and dvd, so i would recommend bringing a underwater camera. but other than that a good day out.
we went for 14 nights, it is classed as rainy season but for 13 days we had sunshine and in the 30's all the time, we had rain for 1 day which lasted only around a hour.
it was perfect, the best holiday i have ever had its definatly 4star,clean, and 5mins from the town and port,so perfect location. we will definatly be going back.

What a 7 night nightmare of a stay.

Lets start with the rooms.
We arrive and they gave our room away with a king bed that we reserved. The room with two beds had no weather stripping on the door so we were eaten alive by insects all night. Moved to another room the next day and it was on top of the water tank for the hotel which filled itself every 60 seconds all night long. So after another night of not sleeping we were told it is ok it is not that loud, which we did not agree with. After about 2 hours of arguing with the staff they finally moved us to another room.

Now the food.
When they say theme nights for the food they mean one night of Oriental food and then the rest is either Mexican traditional or Texmex. So basically Fajitas for the other 6 nights. All of which has no flavor at all, and both of us along with 10 other couples we talked with got sick after eating at the buffet the second night.

Could there be more, why yes the customer service.
We were alwasy told when we sat down if we need anything let them know. Twice my wife was yelled at by the wait staff asking her can you not see I am busy. Another time I was told they were busy and would be back. Well 10 minutes later I still wanted a glass of water so I got up and got it myself. No big deal. Well when the server finally returned he brought me a glass of water. He saw that I had gotten one myself and said "If you would have been patient I would have gotten you water for you".

This is just a few of the reasons why I would recommend against staying at the Melia Cozumel.

I have read many reviews on here some great, some not so great and others down right bad. So, Here is what I am going to do I am writing two reviews..This one(first Impression) and then one Right before I leave(final impression)...Upon arrival here at Melia there was a porter who instantly took my bags and lead me to the front desk..The check in was relatively smooth although there were some communication problems(languauge problems). After check in and on the way up to the room we were approached by a timeshare represenative who was pretty aggressive(watch out for that at the airport to there are some there who claim they are government tourism officals). We told her we were tired and just wanted to go to our rooms she seemed ok with that.We were then lead to our room by the porter who was very friendly..The Elevator up to the room was extremely hot since it is not airconditioned which is not good when you are staying on the 11th floor. The room itself was clean (although aq slight musty smell), nice sized and had a nice view of the ocean(although the water at the beach has to be the dirtiest I have ever seen). We then proceeded to go down for lunch and were once again bothered by the timeshare lady she followed us all the way to the restaurant(one of 4) La Isla a buffet style place. The food was surprisingly good for a buffet the staff was attentive and it had a generally nice atmosphere. On the way back to the room we were once again approched by another but more aggresive time share rep this time we agreed to attend a presentation just to get them off our backs(i'll let you know how that goes). We then went up to our room to shower and take a nap. The shower is ok a little small but plenty of hot water and water pressure. The bed was a little firm for my liking but it was large and clean. I then tried to get something to drink out of the mini bar but it was almost empty so I'll tell my maid about it and see what gets done. We then headed down for dinner and the nightly show. Since we arrived to late to make reservations for two of the restaurants we once again ate at the La Isla but this time it was a Menu option place and not a buffet. Once again the staff was friendly, the food was good but there were very limited options and the portions were small but since it is all inclusive you could always order seconds..We then proceededto the show. The show was called show business it was a lip syncing take off on old broadway performances. The production was amateurish at best and the female costumers a little risque if you have children but the performers are your staff from the Hotel so you can't expect to much so over all it had pretty good entertainment value. I then proceeded back to my room for the night and that is how my day ended. so over all I would say my first impression is favorable. BTW don't let anyone tell you there is no WiFi access because I am using while sitting out on my Balcony writing my review and watching the waves roll in
