I have read many reviews on here some great, some not so great and others down right bad. So, Here is what I am going to do I am writing two reviews..This one(first Impression) and then one Right before I leave(final impression)...Upon arrival here at Melia there was a porter who instantly took my bags and lead me to the front desk..The check in was relatively smooth although there were some communication problems(languauge problems). After check in and on the way up to the room we were approached by a timeshare represenative who was pretty aggressive(watch out for that at the airport to there are some there who claim they are government tourism officals). We told her we were tired and just wanted to go to our rooms she seemed ok with that.We were then lead to our room by the porter who was very friendly..The Elevator up to the room was extremely hot since it is not airconditioned which is not good when you are staying on the 11th floor. The room itself was clean (although aq slight musty smell), nice sized and had a nice view of the ocean(although the water at the beach has to be the dirtiest I have ever seen). We then proceeded to go down for lunch and were once again bothered by the timeshare lady she followed us all the way to the restaurant(one of 4) La Isla a buffet style place. The food was surprisingly good for a buffet the staff was attentive and it had a generally nice atmosphere. On the way back to the room we were once again approched by another but more aggresive time share rep this time we agreed to attend a presentation just to get them off our backs(i'll let you know how that goes). We then went up to our room to shower and take a nap. The shower is ok a little small but plenty of hot water and water pressure. The bed was a little firm for my liking but it was large and clean. I then tried to get something to drink out of the mini bar but it was almost empty so I'll tell my maid about it and see what gets done. We then headed down for dinner and the nightly show. Since we arrived to late to make reservations for two of the restaurants we once again ate at the La Isla but this time it was a Menu option place and not a buffet. Once again the staff was friendly, the food was good but there were very limited options and the portions were small but since it is all inclusive you could always order seconds..We then proceededto the show. The show was called show business it was a lip syncing take off on old broadway performances. The production was amateurish at best and the female costumers a little risque if you have children but the performers are your staff from the Hotel so you can't expect to much so over all it had pretty good entertainment value. I then proceeded back to my room for the night and that is how my day ended. so over all I would say my first impression is favorable. BTW don't let anyone tell you there is no WiFi access because I am using while sitting out on my Balcony writing my review and watching the waves roll in

I must say that my family(husband, daughter, and my mom) and I were pleasantly surprised given the many mixed, and often times bad reviews on this website. I panicked after reading the reviews. Here are my thoughts on this hotel....

The Beach....yes it does look brown and you won't be able to snorkel here. Just walk over to the next hotel, El Coz, the water is clear although a bit rocky (wear watershoes). Plenty of fish, especially if you feed them. There were plenty of chairs and palapas on the Melia beach. Bring your own insulated cup in order to keep your drinks cold while relaxing on the beach or poolside.

Accomodations...we upgraded our rooms from standard oceanview to deluxe suite for 80.00 (we stayed 4 nights) and it was worth every penny. Our room was on the 7th floor with a spectacular view. We had a small fridge which our maid stocked with water, sodas, beer, daily (we only asked her once). Also, we had no mold or bugs in our rooms. Overall, great accomodations, couldn't be better.

Food...We did not eat in the reservations only restaurants, we opted for La Isla and the Iguana grill. We could always find something to eat, my favorite meal was breakfast...fresh fruit, juices, made to order omlettes, and the list goes on. Same with lunch and dinner. Our favorite waiter was Roger, he provided excellent service. Make sure to tip these hard working folks, it was our waiters and bartenders (Check out William at the Iguana Grill/Bar) who really made this a memorable trip with their attentiveness and excellent service. OMG, I forgot to mention the guacamole, without a doubt the freshest I've ever eaten.

Our experience at this all inclusive was excellent from begining to end. Make sure to check out the Dolphin Discovery in Chankunaab, also good snorkeling there. We hope to go back to Cozumel again and would stay at the Melia again.

  • Liked — service provided by waiters, bartenders, maids,
  • Disliked — swimming pools could be bigger and the water in both pools was not very clear (a little cloudy)

I'm glad I read these reviews after I got back because I wouldn't have gone had I read them prior to my stay. I didn't have any of the problems mentioned by others who stayed at the Melia Cozumel. The staff were wonderful, the room was clean and cool with a breath taking view of the ocean, the restaurants were well stocked with very tasty food and open till 11:00pm and we had absolutley no problem drinking as much alcohol as we could possibly want. The swim up bar was the most fun and always had interesting people from all over the world to talk to. We snorkled all over the beach at the hotel and the water was the most beautiful blue I've ever seen. No murkiness like the others have mentioned. The staff were constantly cleaning and even raked the beach every morning. My wife and I felt like we have never been so pampered anywhere we've been. I've included a picture from the hotel room.

  • Liked — The beach side bar, the Iguanas on the hotel lawn, and the buffet
  • Disliked — No Internet access in the rooms, just in the lobby.

My husband and I stayed at the property in 2007 and we were pleased with our stay not super happy but pleased. We liked it so much we became members of the Sol Melia Vacation Club. We booked another vacation there and brought our son in July 2008. We thought because we were members of the Melia vacation club (and Royal Service) that we would get outstanding service. When we arrived the manager greeted us. I think he remembered us. Maybe it was just a rue. But anyway, we figured this was going to be great. WRONG!! We had heard there was new construction, everything looked the same. The only difference was we had a better room. It started with the hotel not remembering that we had our son with us and we needed the sofa bed prepared each day. Twice we had to mention that there were 3 people in the room. Every day I asked for 3 wash clothes and 3 towels and still got 2. I stopped asking. The fridge was not filled just on the day we arrived. There were only 2 restaurants that took reservations: one was the place where they served burgers at lunch time. We remebered from last time the servings were so small that we should stick with the buffet joint of which there is only one. There is no room service at all. So if you did not eat by a certain time forget it, you would have to wait until breakfast. There was no poolside drink service. You either plopped yourself at the adult pool with the swim up bar or walked to the bar on the beach. Being we had our son we opted to stay by the kiddie pool and walk to the bar by the beach. Speaking of kids, there was no kids club even though there is one in the hotel description. There is a kids club building, but no activities for kids and there was no place to take them where they could be engaged in kids activities except by the kids pool by just playing with other kids. There is a pool table and table tennis but for the most part, adults used them. We also got bit up by mosquitoes pretty bad, which you expect in such a warm climate. Can I tell you I am stil waiting on the alcohol I requsted from the second day we were there which was Sunday, 7/27. Unreal. The beach is EXTREMELY DARK AND MURKY because of some barrier in the water between the Melia and the hotel next door. Evidently the 2 hotels are in some sort of argument. Because the barrier keeps the water from flowing and keeps the dirty water at the Melia but if would walk a few yards to the hotel next door beyound the barrier the water is clear as can be. That is where we went snorkeIing. I could go on and on but I would not recommend this place at all. You should also know this is one of the oldest Melia and needs work. We stayed at Melia Caribe Topical in Punta Cana and we were treated like a king and queen. So we were really surprised at this dump. Cozumel is such a beautiful place. Find another resort...Hope this helps you.

We have stayed at Occidental Royal Hideaway, Occidental Grand Flamenco Punta Cana, Occidental Xcaret, Allegro Punta Cana, Occidental Grand Cozumel, Paradisus Palma real, Melia Punta Cana, Melia Puerto rico, Ahmsa Punta cana......all have excellent qualities. We have stayed and I have never written a review.....until now......

Melia Cozumel is horrible. Don't go. Save your money. Pool is too small(crowded dirty......like a city pool) No chairs. Impossible to get a drink. Rooms are wet and moldy. Honeymoon Suite ....smelly and tub broken....big whole in the ceiling. Food was all fried at snack bar. Impossible to get drink. We checked in and and checked out all in the same day. nine people traveling. Take a little extra money and go somewhere else. PLEASE!!!!!! It's not worth the aggravation.
