Being in Cozumel is already a wonderful thing! ... no matter where you stay. However, there are better options than Melia there. My husband and I are water people, and - unfortunately - the sea is NOT inviting in front of this hotel. LOTS...LOTS...and LOTS seaweed come to shore making it really unpleasant to go in the water. If you decide to stay at this hotel, the best closest beach area would be the beach at the hotel next door (El Cozumeleno) - nice crystal clear water!! ... and you can walk over there easily. On a nice note, 1 of the 3 restaurants this hotel has is absolutely GREAT! The only thing is that you've got to travel prepared to dress up a bit to get in. They do not allow shorts or flip-flops at that restaurant. They serve just a couple of tables every night, and you MUST wake up at 6AM to hit the front desk by 6:30AM and stay in line (believe it or not!!...stay in line) to make reservation to go to that specific restaurant. They do not accept ahead of time reservations. You must reserve that on the same day you wish to have dinner there.
We will be going back again this year to Cozumel as the island is really relaxing and inviting. Just keep in mind that the further South you go on the island, the more crystal the water looks... great for snorkeling! We will stay at another hotel this year (South of the Island).

My husband and i loved the Melia and are going back to stay there again in 28 days! Top shelf drinks and really good food. Clean rooms and a nice relaxing beach with plenty of chairs. They have shows each evening also.

I'm a true believer "it's what you make of it", each time you go to an all inclusive you need to come in with a fresh mind-set. We stayed at the Melia from Feb. 16-23rd. We had a great time, everyone was friendly and very helpful. There were 3 different couples that went in our group, 2 with suites, 1 with what we called the Value Pak, a room off the "kids area". All the rooms had fridges & Safes. All were very clean, they stocked the fridge everyday, but, we were only allowed an alloted # of drinks each day. The food was okay, I've had better and I've had worse. We just ended up eating out a couple of times towards the end of the trip, found a GREAT Italian resturant, I believe it was called Prima's, not sure if that's correct, just asked the taxi driver and he told us. The beach was great, the water was a little darker than the beach in front of El Coz, but it was still great to snorkel in. You can just walk down to El Coz & snorkel there, they didn't mind. I was VERY nervous before leaving on this trip after reading some of the reviews, but had a GREAT time. I went in with a positive attitude and left with some great memory's. Oh, rent a jeep, don't do the jeep tour, you won't regret it!! We had a great time doing that!

Good news and bad news. Let's end on a positive note, so the bad news first. Be prepared to either buy into the costly all-inclusive package or you get nothing beyond your room and use of the tennis courts and workout room. Unlike the far superior Melias in Cancun and Cabo, Melia Cozumel does not offer a "pay as you go" option. For example, light breakfasts and light lunches are non-existent. You either buy the $19.00 breakfast or you get nothing. You can't order a drink at the bar without buying the $35.00 per day drink inclusive. So unless you want to eat and drink yourself silly, this place is a rip. By the way, stay out of the little shop in the lobby; a small bag of chips is priced at $8.00 (US)! The beach was okay; beware of the dangerous large underwater rocks when wading into the surf; real toe breakers. It is unfortunate that the tides tend to bring in seaweed making the water very uninviting at times. The fitness room is lacking. Barbells but no plates, lots of heavy dumbells; however, my girlfriend and other women noted that there were few light weights. The Universal machine was okay; the treadmills slipped as noted by just about everybody who came in, the stairmaster did not work, the (1) exercise bike was decent. On the positive side, the staff is extremely cordial as per the other Melias. The room was spacious with a beautiful sea view. Luckily the room had a kitchenette so we were able to stock up some items from a local grocery for breakfasts and snacks. The tennis courts are the nicest of the Melias we have stayed at, and virtually unused. A cab ride to town cost $5.00 (5 minutes); rent a car and drive to the east side of the island for at least one day (we went twice); Coconuts and Punta Sur (lighthouse and beach) are a must! Beware of the drinking water!!

My mom and I returned from a 1 week stay at the Melia on Feb. 18 2008. The hotel was very nice, right up close to the beach, which is in fact the nicest beach on that side of the island. Yes the water was a weird brown colour most days, but if we wanted to swim in the ocean we just walked next door to the El Coz to snorkel. The pools were bare, most days we were one of the few in them, especially the adults only pool. The food wasn't the greatest, but hey we didn't starve, the drinks were good to us, but we aren't heavy drinkers that need tons of alcohol in our drinks. If you want more in them, just ask they are more than happy to do what you ask. Our room was the basic deluxe garden-view room we liked it, we were on the 3rd floor and had a bit of a view of the ocean, the room was always cleaned and the maid left us 2 bottles of water everyday. There was a safe in our room which we kept our valuables in, so I don't understand why people are saying there isn't one. There was no fridge though, but what we felt was more of an inconvenience was no ice machines, we bought beer in town and had no way of keeping them cold. Speaking of cold the air-conditioning wasn't cold enough??? As if, my mom had 3 blankets on the bed and most nights we either shut it off or put it on low beacause it was toooo cold! The staff here aren't the friendliest of the resorts I have been too, but by the end of the week some would say hi. WE went on the jeep tour one day, don't waste your money, the island is sooo small that you are better off just renting your own and taking your time sightseeing. We also took the ferry over to Playa Del Carmen, too busy over the there, the beach was packed, we were glad we picked Cozumel over Mayan. The weather was warm, it rained all day one day and a couple short times through the week. The entertainment obviously isnt first class but hey it was fun, and gave us something to do after dinner. Overall liked the small, close set up of this hotel, after seeing others on the island I think this was the best pick. But we preferred the pacific coast of Mexico, more sunshine and more culture, not as commercialized on the pacific coast, and we found that we liked the beaches and food in Cuba better! Enjoy your trip :)!
