We went to Melia from 1/23-1/28 jan 2008. As I'm sure YOU are, we were very scared after reading some of the reviews. We brought our 3 kids, 1,4, and 11, and all of us had a wonderful trip. We brought our baby's crib out each morning and set it up by the pool, under the trees and an umbrella. She hung out there all day; we brought her toys out. Everyone waled by and talked to her. It was great!
1. The "murky" water. Well, I've seen more clear water, but it's a minor detail. It's still warm and nice. There is seaweed, but again, a small detail. We walked down the beach like some reviews said to do, but although the water was more clear, the beach itself was nowhere NEAR as nice as ours. The Melia beach is the nicest by FAR.
2. The air conditioning. Just turn it on when you get there and leave it on the whole time. Things are slightly damp, but it's a humid environment in general. Our room stayed nice and cool, and if you hang things in the closet, they are dry/less damp.
3. The room. Our room was beautiful. no complaints.
4. The food. I'd say that the buffet was fairly good, with a wide variety of things to choose from. Again, no complaints. The gourmet restaurant, however, was nothing to write home about. It was just as good as the buffet...nothing better. You HAVE to have long pants to go there if you're a man. We experience "fine dining" quite often, and although the atmosphere was very pleasant, the food was just average.
5. The shows. Very basic...my 11 year old enjoyed them alot. Some people said on their review that there is no night life there, and I would agree. It's vert "homey" and low key. Sitting at the bar talking to the bartenders is fun. It's not a wild and crazy place. Great for families. Downtown Cozumel is fun and has a night life...a $5 cab will get you there. We ate at a local place. "La" something. Great.
6. "Just say no" to the time share/vacation club guys. A tip: stay out of the lobby during the morning/afternoon hours. They don't search you out or anything, so staying out of there will save you the hassle.
7. The resort/grounds are flawles. Very beautiful and well maintained. People are ALWAYS cleaning or gardening.

The staff there is so nice and they all want you to be happy. They will do just about everything you ask, with a smile. PLEASE TIP the bartenders and guys in the buffet! And your maid!! They work SO hard, and a few bucks is nothing to us, but everything to them. We tipped at each meal.

We had a fabulous vacation at Melia. We travel alot, and this resort was nice. We actually had a relaxing trip, even though we brought 3 kids and my mother!! Don't let those bad reviews scare you...my guess is that those people are miserable about everything, and probably complain about the smallest of things.

Keep in mind: this is a 3 star, NOT a 5 star. (However, my husband and I would rate it a 4 star based on all of our traveling.)

Have a great time...and oh yes, bring a clock!!! And be sure to look for the ENORMOUS orange Iguana. He hangs out on or near the Paradisus restaurant..he's often on the roof or under the restaurant in back.

  • Disliked — had to go out of the resort for night life

We had 3 couples staying at the Melia for 7 days. The food was generally of good selection with theme nights the best bsing the Italian and Japanase nights in our opinion. We tried one of the specialty restaurants which was the "grill", we should know this by now don't order steak in Mexico, tha T-bone was more like a slice of ham and tasted terrible. The chicken and seafood were good.

Two of upgraded to ocean front rooms with whirlpools the other couple stayed in the normal deluxe rooms. The first upgrade room we had the A/C wouldn't cool but they did move us to a new room the next morning - this may not have been possible if the Hotel would have been full, I think about 50% of the rooms were occupied. This made it very nice for getting food, drinks and chairs on the beach. The couple in the deluxe room kept running out of hot water that was a problem in the beach rooms

The service was good and the entertainment crew tried to get us involved in activities. The nightly entertainment had some good nights like Disco, Broadway and Casino night.

Biggest complaint was the liquor - they advertise premium liquor. The Tequilla was of cheap varieties, no good scotch, brandy or a coffee liquor like Baileys for a night cap. They did have at most of the bars Jim Beam but not at all and they kept it hidden and that is not exactly a premium drink.

Overall we did enjoy our stay and the vacaction in Cozumel.

We stayed at the Melia Cozumel from Jan.6-13/08. It was a very pleasant stay. The staff are very helpful, our ocean view room was beautiful, and the hotel was very clean.

We did however, find that the meals need to be improved. Breakfast was good, but lunch and dinner were either repetitive, or the cuisine was just not good, especially the oriental night. If we had not been on a budget, we would have eaten in town every night. We did eat at the gourmet restaurant twice, which was good, and at the Grill one night. The Grill also was not very good.

We have been to Mexico about 15 times, and know that the quality of the fresh ingredients is wonderful. It should therefore be easy to prepare good meals with good ingredients. I love the tomatoes in Mexico, but hardly saw a tomato while we were there. Also, the food at the snack bar is terrible - everything is fried, except for the salad area, which has flies all over it. The coffee also was quite bad. I think they are using instant coffee, instead of brewed coffee.

In these days of health consciousness, quality of food should be of top concern to anyone providing meals for travelers.

One last comment - all the mixed drinks were extremely sweet. Even the cranberry juice was sweetened. It would be nice to provide some other options for people who don't want really sweetened drinks besides Diet Pepsi.

Would I go back again? YES! But, I would want to eat in town every night!

  • Liked — The view, the cleanliness, the beach.

Been at several Sol Melia's and this is by far the worst.
Arrived on a Saturday and was promised a Jr. Suite only to learn that it was given to someone else. After several hours we were given a room on the 8th floor which wasn't cleaned from the last guests. After waiting another hour it was finally cleaned or so we thought. Mold around the bathroom sink along with tiny bugs walking under the sink. Notified the desk and after another hour someone came and sprayed the bathroom with Raid. Had to call the desk again because towels were dirty and no bottle water in the room. The next evening, we had to walk down from our room because the electric was out and the elevators didn't work. My husband has a heart condition and this was not good for him. When we returned, the electric was back on and we rode the elevator up to our room. We have never experienced a Sol Melia with such poor conditions and inept management.
Food was tolerable and only that, the beach was full of seaweed and the water was murky. Made the management aware of the horrid conditions but they seemed to occupied with other guests. Wrote letters of complaint to their office in Mexico City as well as Spain with no reply. One thing for sure, we will never return to this Sol Melia or suggest it to anyone else.

This older hotel must have recently had a facelift, although not a good one. The pictures on their website look better than the property does in person. The food in the main dining room was satisfactory. The food in the more elegant restaurant (reservations required) was terrbile...skip it altogether. The drinks served throughout the facility, although plentiful, are watered down. Don't expect top shelf liquor here. The pool area was invaded by drunk fratboys who could be heard screaming one property over. They drank all day and never left the pool area. It made relaxing by the pool impossible. The water immediately in front of the Melia is nasty. There is tons of sea grass and the water has a greenish/brownish color. While on the beach you will notice the occassional smell of methane. The Cozumeleno, immediately next door, has crystal clean water with tons of fish, perfect for snorkeling. If we wanted to go swimming in the ocean we had to trek to the Cozumeleno...a hassel. We would not stay at the Melia again!!
