Our family just returned from a 7-day stay at the Melia Cozumel. We had a wonderful time and would return to Melia if visiting Cozumel in the future.
My mom booked this trip for her adult children and their families through her travel agent and Fun Jet. All together, there were fourteen of us, including three families and their five children (ages infant to 14 years).
We stayed in the 12-floor high rise on the top floor. Our rooms were very clean and spacious and faced the ocean. The ocean-side wall was one large sliding glass door, and the view was spectacular. The beds were adequately comfortable, a bit hard for my tastes, but my wife liked hers. Our rooms all had two queens, but they were too uncomfortable for my wife and me together (we have a king at home). The pillows were hard. They were really bad. I wish that I had brought my own. The TV in our room worked adequately, including HBO, Cinemax, ESPN, and CNN, but we don't go on vacations to watch TV, so this doesn't matter to us. Bathroom was clean and large; no problems with water pressure. Our room had a microwave and small refrigerator. Rooms were quiet. The only noise we heard from outside our room was when we left our sliding glass door open and heard somebody getting sick next door to us on New Year's Eve. Other than that, all we could hear was the roll of the surf. Very peaceful.
Our group was four couples, including my parents (late sixties); brother his wife (early forties) and their 2 y.o. son; sister and her husband (late thirties) and their infant son, 3 y.o. and 6 y.o. daughters; and my single brother (late thirties). My wife and I are in our early-mid forties and have a 14 y.o. daughter. Melia offered something for everyone in our large group: two pools, one adult with a swim-up bar, and the other a large children's pool for toddlers through teens that had activities for the kids. The hotel is on the Gulf of Mexico side of Coz. and has a very nice, white sand beach, and there were always plenty of chairs. The staff was up and preparing the beach for the day very early each morning. I was up every morning at 6 AM, and the beaches already were being groomed and cleaned for the day. The resort offers all of the typical water sports on the beach at the typical rates: wave runners, snorkeling gear (free), parasailing, etc. Although they allow you to use snorkeling gear for free, there really aren't any reefs to make snorkeling worth while. Most of our group spent most of their time at the resort.
The food at the all-inclusive restaurants was good. We've stayed at three or four other all inclusives in Mexico, and this resort was slightly above the average. Most of my family ate all of their meals at the resort, while my wife and I ventured into town on a few occasions (only five minutes by cab, fare was five dollars US each way). They have three restaurants, two of them are supposed to be finer dining by reservations only. You must make reservations the day of, and they begin taking them at 7 AM. My mom was usually the first person in line and they seemed to frown upon a table for fourteen since they have only room for about 75-100 seats and have only two servings each evening. Reservations seemed to close by 7:30. Sometimes the third person in line was told that reservations were closed, which didn't seem to make sense. Many people were upset that they could not get reservations, but we ate at both of the reservation-only eateries and the large buffet restaurant and found that the buffet was just as good quality food as the others. In fact, the food essentially is the same. What you are paying for is a somewhat nicer, more intimate atmosphere and being waited on. Although the food and atmosphere is nice, it really wasn't worth the hassle of fretting about reservations, though. If you're a couple looking for a romantic dinner, try making reservations at The Paris at the resort; otherwise, I strongly suggest going to a nice restaurant in town instead. (My wife and I ate a very nice and romantic dinner at Guido’s in town.) The food in the buffet was very good. Breakfasts were the same every morning, with dozens of options ranging from cold cereal to excellent fresh-made omelets. For lunch, you can choose from The Grill, which serves hot dogs, hamburgers, quesadillas, a large salad bar, French fries, poppers, etc. The buffet offered much of the same but also had a grill chef who would prepare beef, pork, or chicken meat for building your tacos. (You have to ask him for tortillas!) Dinners in the buffet were very good. Each night was a different theme; the nights we ate there we had Mexican, Italian, and Asian. Our favorite was Italian with a pasta bar. You tell the chef what you want on your pasta and he prepares it for you on the spot. We had no complaints about the food, overall, but I do recommend getting there early for each meal so that you have the freshest choices. It seems that they don't keep things on the buffet very cold, nor did I see them exchanging out food items very often. We usually arrived very early for each meal. Of the fourteen in our party, only one person became sick, and that was my wife. She had a short, violent attack of upper and lower g.i. flue-like symptoms that we attribute to something she ate, but we are not sure. Most of our party ate every meal at the resort, and nobody else experienced any illness.
I must say that the staff was excellent in their attitude and service, especially the bartenders and restaurant staff. We have learned at other resorts over the years that tipping, although never expected, often goes a long way. My family is very generous, and we all tipped our bartenders and the wait staff at all of the restaurants, and we were treated like royalty. A dollar goes a long way and is very much appreciated by the folks working at all inclusive resorts, but never did we see any tip jars or staff expecting tips at Melia.
We experienced very bad weather during two of the days during our stay, including 60-70 mph winds that caused nearly all off-island activities to close down. The ports were closed, and people were not able to go to attractions off island or on the water, including fishing and SCUBA. So a lot of people were pretty much stuck at the resort for two days, and I suppose the scene there could have turned very ugly. The staff really rose to the occasion and helped everyone maintain an upbeat and fun time there. We had dinner reservations at The Grill the night of 70 mph winds and they had to close the restaurant since it is open air and sand was blowing so hard it made eating impossible. The staff went out of their way to make amends by moving us to the buffet restaurant and waiting on us there.
The resort provides computers with Internet access. It costs $5 for half an hour on their computers, but I saw many people using personal laptops in the lobby and assume they were accessing wi-fi. I don't know if this is available or what the cost is.
The resort can make arrangements for all activities on and off Cozumel, including snorkeling and SCUBA, fishing, excursions to the mainland and parks, car and jeep rental, etc. We booked all of our activities through the Fun Jet representative who is not directly connected with the resort, but who had an office there. We were told to beware of booking activities with the resort staff or other vendors because they might not refund if something is cancelled. We had several events cancelled due to weather, and all was refunded by Fun Jet, or at least when booking activities to make sure that full refunds are made if anything is cancelled for any reason. We could easily have lost hundreds of dollars in cancelled events if refunds were not made. Also, there are about seven or eight people who daily work the lobby of the resort. Our Fun Jet rep. said to work only through him because many of these people are timeshare reps. We followed his advice and didn't talk to any of them, so I really can't comment on what they're up to.
Overall, despite the bad weather our trip to Cozumel and stay at the Melia all inclusive resort was a wonderful time. We all agree that we would return to Melia if visiting Coz again.
