My husband and I vacationed at the Occidental Grand Cozumel from August 12-18, 2007. We travel very significantly thru Mexico and the Caribbean staying in a variety of accommodations - sometimes all-inclusives, or either hotels, villas, etc. We've been to a variety of all-inclusives and I must say that I believe that this resort ranks up there with one of the better all-inclusives. It is not a large facility - app. 250 rooms but is a top notch operation. The staff at this resort is unbelievably friendly and helpful. I found the rooms to be above average for an all-inclusive (remember you are not staying at the Hyatt!).
For an island of reefs, the beach is above average. There is a good number of beach chairs, umbrellas and palapas and the beach was never full. There is a quiet section off to the right side with several palapas that we utliized and no one was ever on top of us. The water in the sea was outstanding - so crystal clear. We snorkeled off of the beach all week and although there are no reefs right there, the snorkeling was great. Each day, we swam in a school of thousands of fish, saw the hugest starfish, sting rays, barracudas and a variety of colored tropical fish. We also utlized the hobie cats several days and the water was calm enough that it was quite fun.
Something you rarely see in an all-inclusive is that they had drink service on the beach which was quite nice, although they had two bars at the beach so drinks were quick to come by. And one very big plus in my opinion at this resort is that they use brand name liquor and hand blend all drinks - they do not use pre-made mixes so the drinks are very high quality.
I found the food at the restaurants to be of very good quality and variety as well and we enjoyed the buffet, both a la carte restaurants and the pizzeria. We enjoyed every meal and one other thing to note is that the house wines that they use in all of the restaurants are Spanish wines that were also quite acceptable for an all-inclusive. We have been to several resorts where the house wines were so poor that if you wanted to drink wine with dinner, you needed to purchase a bottle. The evening shows were short but very cute. We did not utilize the disco or the spa because we were up too early and wanted to just be outside all day.
The island of Cozumel is really quite fun as well. It is a large island but flat and very easily navigable. We rented a jeep for the week because it was very cheap to do so at the airport. We paid $112 for the week thru Hertz for our jeep. This gave us the opportunity to go into town whenever we wanted as the resort is about 20-30 minutes outside of the town. Shopping in San Miguel is fun and there are some good bargains. And the drive over to the east side of the island is worth it - very scenic, rough, and rocky and there are a number of fun beach bars along the way. One other thing to note is that there were very few people along the beach selling things and the ones that were there were not aggressive at all which is nice. We decided to stop going to Cancun because you just get tired of telling people "no thanks."
I would highly recommend this resort to other vacationers and I would definitely return to this resort if given the opportunity.
