First, let me say I have no complaints other than my AC was not cold enough for me. At night when I slept, it was fine and very comfortable. But, I happen to like a very cold AC and I was up on the 3rd floor, which could the reason and it probably was just me personally. Other guests that I asked about the AC in their room were just fine. I told the management and they kept checking it. The hotel wants you to be happy and they are very quick in sending help. I locked myself out of my safe on 2 occasions. They were there quickly to open it for me. I absolutely loved my stay at the Occidental Grand.
If you were there during my stay, I was the professional singer that you all heard during Venus vs Mars game in the plaza and at Karaoke in the disco.
Im a widow and travelled with my only son who is 15. I am a seasonsed traveller to the Carribean and have been to very remote areas. My son and I are both Naturalists (the study of biology, insects, trees, birds, ocean, etc, you get it). We both are divers, snorkelers, adventurers, ecologists.
I cannot say there was a problem with bugs despite the fact the hotel is absolutely surrounded by jungle. The tiny ants that may appear in your bathroom are just scouts and are minimal. Some people may get them, some wont. If you kill them, they cannot send back a signal to the colony they have found something. If you are phobic about insects, Im not sure you will be happy anywhere. Even Disneyworld has insects. I live in NYC, we are nothing but concrete and hardly any trees and we have insects. You really cannot get away from them. That is why management does not want you to bring food outside the restaurants and leave it in your room. There is no infestation of any kind in the hotel. As a naturalist, I would be the first to tell any of you the absolute truth. I personally had to seek out bugs in order to study them. There are wonderful birds, beautiful butterflies, interesting insects that dont bite, many iguanas that you can see in the trees and walking around (they are harmless), turtles, hermit crabs, etc. (if you want more info on any of the flora & fauna, you can email me) There is a small wetland that is connected by a bridge from the hotel buildings to the pool and beach area. It has great wading birds in it and turtles. Take the time to see them. I go no where without my binoculars. I was a regular on that bridge scanning the wetland. I also saw alot of hummingbirds in the wonderful plants that are around the hotel. Take time to listen and look around. While snorkeling from the hotel beach, all the way out towards the ropes, I encountered a huge school of horseyed jack fish. Id estimate over a thousand, maybe more. In the middle was a huge barracuda. (I counted 3 different cudas in different locations. ) I just floated over them and observed. Interestingly, the barracuda has, what I believe to be scavenger fish that travel along side it. When the Cuda attacks the school and eats a fish, the other fish that accompany him get the morsels that he doesnt eat. If you get the opportunity to see the barracuda hunt, its quite a spectacular scene. Its so fast. Its like watching a torpedo. Dont worry, they are not interested in humans, just do not harass or taunt it. Like anything or anyone, respect is always the name of the game. As humans we will protect ourselves from an attack and so will the animal, fish, bird & insect kingdom.
Remember, this island is nearly 2/3 preserved as national park including the surrounding reef. Unfortunately, Hurricane Wilma did destroy alot of the trees (along with buildings) and the fragile sea fans and sponges in the reef. I saw reef damage, but it is coming back. We used Dive Palancar which is adjacent to the hotel. We went diving with them and went on a 3 reef snorkel tour. I spoke to several of the guides who took me out on dive/snorkel trips who informed me that the Mexican Government is protecting this island and not allowing over developement. They are very ecologically minded and know how fragile the eco system and reef is. The turtles use Cozumel as a nesting ground and no one is allowed to go anywhere near those beaches. Im have to commend the Mexican government for its awareness and protection of this magnificent place. I saw Grand Cayman before there were cruise ships, stingray city and hotels. It was simply pristine and magnificent. 2 hotels and 1 flight a day. It was like being back in time. Now that island is one giant development and totally commercialized. So, Im happy that I can come back to Cozumel in 20 years, and still find alot of it pristine. If you want commercialization, just go to the mainland.
The food, in my opinion was great. The service was excellent. The hotel room was kept extremely clean. The entertainment staff were very good and friendly. All the guests I met, from all over the world, were great. I had alot of fun. I also made my very own ceramic bowl, with the people who operate the stand on the beach near the outside dining area. Its fun! The owner will finish off your item and make it look like a real work of art. I had great conversations with others guests while we were all doing this.
I rented a car and went to the "other side". (I did not take any discounts from the timeshare people, my time is more important than sitting through a presentation to save a few bucks. Be careful, you can easily get sucked into that) It is totally uninhabited and the ocean is treacherous, but magnificent. The beaches are pristine. Do not swim there unless you are in a designated area. I went to Playa Bonita, which has a little restaurant and palapas on the beach where the ocean comes right up to you while your sitting and to the steps of the restaurant. It was magical. They had a lifeguard. All I did was order a soda for both of us. The surf was great! It was a crescent shaped beach with huge breakers. I live in NYC and our surrounding waters have huge breakers (fire island, jones beach, Jersey shore, etc), so Im used to that kind of surf. The ocean in front of the hotel is extremely calm as it is on the leeward side of the island. We then went to an area called Playa Chen Rio. This area was unique as it had ironshore that would break the waves and create huge tidal pools. It was packed with the resident Mexicans that live on the island. I truly believe that my son and I were the only tourists there. It was a Sunday and the island residents were there with their families, having picnics on the beach and swimming in the tidal pools. They had posted lifegaurds on top of a hill to watch over all the children. In some areas, I could feel where you could literally get dragged out to sea. Thats why I realized that one huge tidal pool was the most populated because it was extremely safe. There is nothing but pristine beaches and jungle on the other side. For me, it was spectacular.
On Sunday night, we drove into San Miguel and went to the main plaza. The residents of Cozumel congregate on Sunday night at the plaza to listen to a band, salsa dance and just have plain old commaraderie. There were hundreds of residents. It was simply great. Because there were no cruise ships, there were minimal tourists. Everyone was friendly and I was asked to dance. I love to experience the real culture of wherever I am. I would recommend to anyone to go there on a Sunday night to see this and to go to the other side to see how the island looks without any development. It is the way it was created from time immemorial. Thats hard to find today.

I highly recommend this hotel. I loved it. Just a reminder, do your research before you book any vacation. If you want to be near town and want alot of shopping and touristy type of stuff, realize that this hotel is several miles from town. It was perfect for me. When I noticed the hotels near town, they were not near as nice as the Occidental Grand. I did not want to be near town. I reasearch very thorougly for what I want before I book. This hotel was perfect for us!
