Before you decide to go to Cozumel you need to remember that the island has not yet fully recovered from Wilma and that it may be several years before it does. The resorts have planted new vegetation and trees but much of the island is still covered with dead trees and debris. Some of the older roads have been washed away preventing ground travel to some areas. However, it is still a beautiful island worth discovering with lots to see and do.
Accommodations:
We upgraded to the Royal Club and it was well worth the extra. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. The only complain is that the buildings are very noisy with doors slamming shut and some guest leaving their doors open with the TV blasting, this is a problem in all the buildings. Unfortunately this was the first week of summer school break and there were plenty of kids around and a couple of wedding parties. We requested to move to another building in the middle of the week because of an impromptu party in the room below us. They don't monitor who goes in and out of the Royal Club area.
Restaurants:
Both the service and the food were excellent at the Royal Club restaurant; we had most of our meals at this restaurant. The Posada buffet restaurant has plenty of variety and the food is good quality. Los Olivos has a nice atmosphere but the service was rushed the evening we went and the meals were average. The meals came before we even started our drinks and we never got to the antipasto bar that we ordered. It could have been a bad night for them. The Grille is OK if you order the filet mignon but no one we spoke to really liked this restaurant. Again the service was rushed and the place was noisy.
The La Hacienda Mexican restaurant was not open. We never tried the Pizzeria but we did go there to listen to a band that plays there each evening. The beach bar restaurant provides a selection similar to what Posada offers at lunch but not as extensive.
Note: most food is very salty
Features/amenities:
The grounds and pools are very well maintained with plenty of friendly iguanas roaming around and the odd turtle. The gym is perfectly fine for a quick morning workout. The lobby bar is well decorated with large adjoining areas but as with most ‘all-inclusive’ resorts there are always ‘barflies’ that are glued to the bar with the usual lit cigarette or cigar. Some even bring their young offspring to share in the experience. Order your drink and take it with you to the outside patio. We never went to the bar & disco called Mision.
Activities:
For those interested, there are plenty of activities at the beach side pool all day long for both adults and kids. Although we didn’t participate in any of the activities, the staff appeared to be very professional and experienced. Snorkelling in front of the hotel is OK for starters. There are plenty of great locations along the coast without having to take a boat out. Try next to the Dzul Ha beach club. A useful web site with a list of Cozumel snorkelling info is (--). A trip to the eastern side of the Island is a must but not for snorkelling or swimming. Lunch at a Beach Club can be a bit pricy but worth a try to get some of the local flavor.
Beware:
If you want a rental car do it from the airport, the rental desk at the hotel will charge you USD $10 per day cash up front for taxes which of course are already included in the rental price.
If you get stopped by the police for speeding, which probably happens regularly to tourist, they will want to take your drivers license from you which you then have to claim back the next day in town after you pay the fine. Offer to pay the fine now and most likely they will accept but they won’t give you a receipt. The fine was $45 and I never saw a ticket pad, just a blank piece of notepaper.
Be adamant with the timeshare guys if you’re not interested, you’ll quickly get to know who they are. They hang around the buildings and prey on guests as they go in and out. They have an office next to the hotel parking lot where they take their intended victims.
Tipping:
We tipped at almost every meal. We would generally leave a couple of dollars at breakfast and lunch and $5 or more for dinner. We also left the maid a $5 tip every morning. We did leave tips with the bartenders although the quality of the drinks and the service was always a hit or miss. We ended up getting most of our drinks from the Royal Club where there was never a problem with the service and they also use premium brands.
We have always stayed away from 'all-inclusive' packgages preferring to do things on our own. I would however recommend the Grand especially if you can afford the Royal Club.
