My wife works in the travel industry and booked 3 rooms for a small group that was going for a quick dive weekend in Cozumel. When we arrived, our names were on the checkin list and we were given some nice champaign cocktails as we settled into the lobby. After we finished our drinks, we proceeded to the check-in and were informed that the hotel was full and that there were no rooms available for our party. HOWEVER, they did have rooms at the other Occidental property and they offered to have us stay at that property for one night and that they would bring us back to this property the next day. To compensate us for the trouble, the one night at the other hotel was free. So we take the taxi to the other hotel, have dinner, drinks, etc and the dive boat picks us up in the morning. We got off the boat around 1:00 pm, the boat operator dropped us at the property where we were supposed to be checking in. One person had stayed behind to make sure all the bags had made it and to oversee check-in. They asked that we wait till 3 to check-in, so we sat on the beach and enjoyed more cocktails untill 3 when we were supposed to go back to the front to check-in. My wife and her sister go to check in while the rest of us stayed on the beach. About 30 minutes later, my sister in law comes back the beach and asks the men to hurry back to the front because the front desk is threatening to throw my wife in jail for tresspassing if we didn't leave immediately. So we grab all our dive gear and hurry back to the front. I got to the front and my wife explained what was going on. When I walked up, my wife and the hotel manager were in a very heated discussion while the guys that work the front lobby area were conviently hanging around as if ready to physically move her away from the counter. They weren't security, but it was obvious that they were supposed to thor us out. The hotel was now saying that they have no record of our reservation, then they said (almost in the same breath) that our reservation was invalid because there is no way they would have booked an agency rate during the high season and that there were no empty rooms in the hotel. However, if we were willing to pay the rack rate, they would be able to get three rooms for us right away and the entire ordeal would be over. By the way, the rack rate was 2.5X as much as the reservation we made. While she is explaining this to me, the manager is saying that we either need to pay the new rate or leave the property. If we don't pay or leave they are going to call the police and have us charged with tresspassing. So much for the previous night's free room and champaign arrival drinks. A few of us headed to pay phones while another 'borrowed' a hotel phone and we started calling around to find out if there were any other rooms available in Cozumel. We were EXTREMELY lucky. I called my dive operator and found our that they have the ability to book hotel rooms and since they are local, they called around and found 3 2 bedroom suites at (Fiesta Americana) another hotel. What's important about this little slice of luck is that it was high season and most of the big popular hotels were full. The afternoon flight for Dallas had already left while this was going on, so if the dive operator hadn't come through and found rooms for us we would have had no choice but to agree to the price gouging and pay 2.5X the reservation rate. Convient how they had rooms if we were willing to pay extra for them. No doubt if we would have paid they would have kicked some other family out to the curb. You may get lucky and be one of the many people that doesn't have a problem with this place, but look at how many times you read a story like this one and tell me that it can't happen to you. By the way, if we would have paid, someone else would have been posting a story just like this one. We go to Cozumel at least two times a year and this was our first and last attempt to stay at an Occidental property.
