We stayed at the Occidental Grand for 2 weeks in June and loved it. We had a ground floor room which looked straight into the jungle which proved brilliant for wild life spotting.
The gardens were amazing here and really well kept, the layout was well decorated with plenty of water features. The 2 swimming pools were cleaned regularly and were very decent sizes however my partner did cut his foot on the tiling and we discovered a lot of other people had done this also. There were always plenty of activities around the pool area thanks to the entertainments team including water polo/volleyball, bingo, "crazy games" and quizzes (thanks to Alan, Yuanwario and Enrique!).
The beach can't be faulted, there were plenty of beds any time of the day and there is a brilliant reef to snorkel round just off of the shore (be careful of the resident barracuda). This was really good for experienced divers and total beginners(Amy!).
The rooms were large with spacious bathrooms, however they could have done with a bit more wardrobe space. There is everything you could need - tea/coffee maker, hair dryer, TV with a good selection of channels and even an ice bucket. The maid visited every day and always left towel animals for us with fresh flowers which was a really nice touch. We were lucky enough to be visited by humming birds, endless lizards & iguanas and a delightful tarantula.
!! THE WALLS ARE VERY THIN IN THE ROOMS SO YOU CAN HEAR LITERALLY EVERYTHING IN YOUR NEIGHBOURS ROOMS !!
Food - The hotel is All Inclusive and we found that generally there was a really good selection (however it was definitley catered for the Americans - pancakes & french toast). Although you will find they serve the previous evenings dinner for breakfast (potatoe wedges & curly fries next to the toast). The quality of the food was really good and the A La Carte restaurants were of a very high standard (the Grill does a mean steak!!)
A friend we met out there (lucky number 7 - you know who you are!!!) did get food poisening from the Mediterranean restaurant so be wary of the shell fish, but then again he did go back to the restaurant once recovered so the prawns must have been worth it!
When looking at booking to go to Cozumel be careful of the timings as this seems to be a hot spot for young Americans to enjoy their Spring Breaks/Graduations/generally getting drunk before hitting 21! There were a lot of young kids getting drunk as the bar men don't ask for ID so a lot of 15-16 year olds were getting there full of the free bar.
In general we had a brilliant time here, met some really decent people (Chinese Alan, Meow People) and some crazy people that can't handle beer and enjoy "wet floor" signs (and harrass the poor locals and their radios in the taxi's!!)
One thing to add though - the reps for First Choice are crap! Be very wary of the excursions they sell as they exagerated most things (The 3 reef snorkel trip doesn't have a retro boat with bean bags?!?!) and they fail to mention that you have to get your own taxis to the ferry for any mainland excursions such as Chichen Itza (which by the way is amazing and seriously recommended!)
They even had the nerve to ask for glowing reports at the end of the holiday!
