I have been in Occidental Grand Cozumel for two weeks in february and it was the best time in my life! I travel all over the world, I have been in many 5 star hotels but this one had the nicest stuff ever!!!!(Roberto, Carolina, Luis and Miguel from entertaiment stuff and Jourge Luis and Jourge from the front desk) those are really awsome people that you can have a loooooot of fun!!!!They did everythiing to make my stay over there unforgettable and it was breathtaking ....the hotel was pretty small and because of that it was so snug and pleasent...the food was delicious(there were shrimp and other seafood every night, and for lunch we could order any meat or fish we wanted, they made great fajita...let's not forget about huge buffet for brakfest where we could get almost everything) the beach was beautiful ...and there was a lot of fun things to do, pool volleyball, beach volleyball, dance lessons, excercise in a pool, dance(salsa)lessons, crazy games and many more.... in the bars they made the best drinks, which we could order on the beach, cause waitress was asking if anyone wants anything to drink all the time ...so we just stayed on the beach and we got the drinks (MAMASITA, rainbow shots ...).The rooms were huge and very comfortable ...and everything was very pretty cause it's build in a mexican style ....this hotel is just AMAIZING!!!!!!and the worst hotel ever is Occidental Flamenco from which we had to move cause it was packed, huge, and it had tiny beach....which was very far away from the rooms ...they gave us room with two beds and told us that it is a room for four people even we had ordered different room and they told us that it is all that they have ....the stuff in Flamenco was the worst ...people were so unpolite and they were blaming us for everything like it was our fault that they didn't have a room for us... there were guests complaining that someone have stolen their money and other thing ....there were MANY people who had moved from Occidental Flamenco to Occidental Grand in Cozumel for many reasons ...mostly cause people just couldn't stand Flamenco ....so good advice don't ever go to occidental Flamenco, it's the worst hotel ever ....and they can ruin your vacation like they did it to us!!!

We just returned from a week stay. The place is beautiful. The food was great. Alot of variety to choose from especially for the little one. The room was a little musty but expected that. Was very impressed with the spacious rooms and the beautiful bathrooms. We meet alot of wonderful people and would most definetly go back again soon:-)

Like others, I too read the reviews before traveling. I thought OK, I'm prepared for anything- good or bad! The trip was fantastic! We were a party of 9 people, 4 adults and 5 teens, ages between 15 and 18. After a rough start (problems w/ the airline overbooking their flight) we arrived to a waiting taxi, a van large enough for 9 with luggage. When we arrived at the hotel, which was gorgeous, we were met with Champagne and led to the Front Desk for check-in. When we got to our four rooms, all were located in the same building! I read that the rooms could be musty, 2 were. We requested 2 room changes, and we got them with no problem. It seems that the "mustiness" problem is worst with first floor rooms. The rooms were large & clean. The baths had whirlpool tubs and a separate shower. All of the staff, from housekeeping to waiters to management, were most accomodating, helpful and happy! I understand that hotel jobs are prized among the locals in Cozumel. The food was very good and plentiful. It seems as though our stay revolved around drinks and meals! Towards the end of the week, I had my fill though!
Some "MUSTS": Go on the Wild Tours ATV Trip. You can book the trips in the main building...ask for Wilberth(he was a terrific help with all the trips). Also, book early in your stay as the tours do fill up quickly. What a blast! It rained the day we went ATVing, but that made it even better(the large puddles in the rough terrain road made for lots of fun!). Our guides Joy and Guy were the best. They were informative about the island and the ruins. We had lunch on the beach, but couldn't kayak out to the reefs or snorkel due to the poor weather but it was definitely one of the highlights of the trip! We arranged snorkeling and deep sea fishing trips through the dive shop.
Snorkeling, 3 or 2 hour trips(we did both on different days) were also fantastic. The reefs, the fish, the guides- all were world class!
Caught some tuna on the deep sea fishing trip! The men enjoyed golf on the only course on the island. The starter at the course, Gary, recommended a local restaraunt and reserved our table! That was a special treat!! Food and atmosphere were awesome! All in all the trip was definitely one of the best for all of us! The hotel was clean, safe, and offered fun things to do both at the hotel and off-site. We unanimously decided that we'd do it all again!

This was an excellent resort! The rooms were beautiful. Everything was VERY clean! Grounds were kept emmaculate. The food was not fantastic but was good. You have to chose to eat what you like! There is something there for everyone so the food shouldn't be a problem. Makes me wonder where some of the people stayed that are complaining. The staff was great - very professional and fun. Nothing to whine about here! It was an excellent stay and I would recommend to anyone. I will definitely be going back.

Just returned from a two week vacation at the Grand Cozumel. (Feb 7 - 21). This was our 4th all-inclusive vacation in 4 years. The resort exceeded our expectations and we plan to return.

Resort and room: The design of the resort is very appealing. The attractive villas (housing 18 units per villa) bordering a central boulevard amid lush tropical vegetation give the resort a more intimate scale than the traditional hotel resort. The rooms are clean & spacious and the bathrooms oversized with plenty of storage space. We had an ocean facing room on the 3rd floor. Did not use the AC except for a couple of hours in the afternoon to reduce the humidity in the room. At night slept with the balcony door opened and listened to the wind/water. The villas have tiled floors throughout, so there will be some noise - but nothing that we found to be a bother. As you probably know, this is a very humid climate and wet articles left in the room (towels, bathing suits etc) will not dry.

Pools/Beach: The beach is among the best for Cozumel. However the beaches are not on par with what you will find on the Mayan/Cancun coast or Varadero. The beach is smaller and the sand is much grittier.
However, we did not need to use our water shoes to enjoy the beach or the water. The hugh plus of the Cozumel beach is the easy access to the beautiful reefs - literally a stone's throw from the beach. There are two pools - the "party/childrens' pool" and the "quiet pool". The pools are not heated and some people found the water cold.

Food/Service: The food quality exceeded our expectations on 12 of the 14 days we stayed. The buffet restaurant featured fresh grilled-to-order seafood, chicken and beef at lunch and dinner everyday. Wide selection of salads, cold entrees and hot dishes. The dessert selection was the best we have experienced, offering fresh cakes (chocolate, cheese, mocha, pineapple etc), flans and pasteries.
The a la carte restaurants were very good, and offered menu choices not available at the buffet. The first week of our stay we easily made reservations without having to face the 8am line-up. On the 2 days we were less than happy with breakfast or dinner, this was because the resort was clearly at capacity and had difficulty responding to the number of people. We also noted during the second week that the menu selection changed to respond to the large number of families/children at the resort (US school break for many of the northern US states). The service was friendly and responsive - from the front desk, maid service, restaurants and bars. The front desk staff all speak English very well as do most of the restaurant staff.

Activities: Wide range of activities available, but this is not the place to go for night-life. If you want an active night-life you will probably find Cancun much more to your taste. IF shopping in San Miguel is on your list, it's better to go to town on Monday, Friday and Saturday when there are fewer cruise ships in port - less crowds and better prices. Prices are also better one street back of the main shopping street and bartering is a must.

What could be improved : No shuttle service to San Miguel meant a costly cab ride to town and back. ($17 US each way). Cost can be reduced if you can find someone to share the cab - but best solution would be for the resorts to offer a shuttle service.

What we would do differently: Avoid school break and President's day holiday weekend. Simply put, there were far too many children the second week of our stay and unfortunately many of the parents acted like they were on holidays from their kids. The first week there were no wait times - the second week we experienced wait times for access to the buffet, restaurant bookings etc. The President's day holiday brought a number of short term vacationers (2 to 4 day junkets) who, understandably, wanted to make the most of their short stay.
Unfortunately this meant that some of these short term visitors adopted an aggressive "it's all about me" attitude and behaved boorishly.
