Pros: some parts pretty, kids had fun at pool
Cons: biggest is Sewage smell, many others listed below
Returned last night from 5 days at Occidental Grand (5/24/2008 - 5/28/2008). We have been to Cozumel numerous times and this was a first visit to an all-inclusive on Cozumel. However, we have stayed at them in Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas, and Jamaica.
The entire place is a mixture of some really beautiful things, a lot of small bad things and a few really bad things that will keep us from staying there again.
Some of the buildings our clan stayed in were 10, 12, 16,and 20 (the Royal Club).
The rooms were nice as were the bathrooms which include a narrow soaking tub. Each room has a balcony which is equipped with 2 cheap, green plastic chairs. The curtains close completely and have a blackout lining- so the room is nice and dark for sleeping. The a/c works so-so unless it is raining hard and then it works pretty well. Nice electronic safe. Small fridge with water and Pepsi products. You can buy a can of Coke or Dr. Pepper in the gist shop for $2 each (regular size cans).
The grounds, not counting the water fountains, were very pretty. The grounds could be difficult to navigate if you drink too much and try to remember which turn to take (they all look alike) to find your building. But, each building is numbered so I think most people would eventually find the right building. There are four fountain pools around the main courtyard area where they have events at night. For the length of our stay they were never cleaned of the debris in them, mostly leaves and some trash.
There is a considerable walk to the beach, pool, scuba diving, lunch area, especially from buildings 10 and 12. You cross a somewhat lengthy wooden brindge that is in a state of disrepair to get to the family pool, beach, lunch, etc. the first day I thought it was neat but by the second day I was starting regret it. Last and this is the big one *** the sewage smell ***. When we existed the shuttle from the airport I was so disgusted by the stench in the lobby I could hardly check in without gagging. It is bad most days, especially up around the lobby, bar , gift shop. One day there was a noticeable air freshner smell up that way the was able to cover it somewhat. The sewage smell is also on the grounds but it sporadic locations (I think it may be tied to the water?).
The staff. Let me first say there are a few great staff. They are the lady who does the activities with the kids. She remembers their names after one meeting and actively tries to engage them in the activities around the pool area (water polo, horse shoe throwing in the sand, etc). At times, she would just hop in the pool and start bouncing a ball back and forth with the kids who happen to be there. There are one or two great activity guys at the pool area who try to get you involved in the adult activities. But for the most part, the staff could care less about their jobs. There is real lack of pride at this hotel that I've never seen on the island before. ie. A pile of limes from drinks was on the ground in the pool area where we sat and it was there for three days (almost in the walkway) before it was washed away by a heavy rain.
The food is marginal, even at their "special" restaurants. There are very strict times/ locations for eating meals. With travelers from all different time zones it means you could be hungry for a while before the next meal is available. You could make the trip back to your room from the pool to order room service but it seems like alot (considering the distance). I was at the pool one morning around 9:30 and asked one of the staff where I could get a water or Pepsi and he told me "back home" that the bar didn't open until 10:30.
Location: too far from town with a pricey cab fare.
