“Beware the timeshare!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013 via mobile

My best friend and I stayed at the Occidental Grand Cozumel for our very first trip out of the country. We loved the resort, the staff was really helpful and the drinks and food were flowing!! We did get sucked into a timeshare pitch while we were there though, and we actually did sign up/purchase. It was a good decision for us, but I understand how that can be hard for some people (people who CAN'T say no!!). Aside from that, the resort had a few sit-down, reservation only restaurants that we unfortunately didn't get to take advantage of, as well as a nightly buffet and room service. The bars were open late as well, and we had a great time socializing with our fellow vacationers. I would definitely go back sometime in the future. The resort itself is just beautiful with a Moroccan-style theme with domed roofs and gas lamps, along with beautiful fountains lining the walkways. I would definitely recommend this resort to my friends and family!

I want to start by saying the hotel was beautiful! It had an old Mexican open concept. It was beautiful. The hotel was spread out, there was a main building, a disco, a place where the shows took place, the rooms were like "mini" hotels, and the beach was unbelievable.

The hotel was gorgeous, and clean. The staff was very friendly, although they were not very helpful. As an example we arrived on a Monday, Tuesday morning I went down to the front desk at 7 AM to make reservations at one of the restaurants THEY WERE BOOKED UNTIL SATURDAY, we left Friday. I thought the way they booked the restaurants was unfair, esp. because they did not tell us how to make reservations for the restaurants when we checked in. A word of advice when you check in get information about how to make reservations right away, they fill up fast. We ate at the "buffet" type place every morning, and night which got very old. The food was not bad, but not good. Other days were better than some.

Overall, I had a fantastic time, but I will not go back. The food was not worth the "all inclusive" I left many meals uneaten and even left the resort to find some food we could enjoy. If your looking for a relaxing hotel for a family this is a great hotel for you. If your young and enjoy a little night life, this is not what you will get. The beach was breathtaking and downtown Cozumel was a blast, just be ready to pay $50 for your cab fare into town (including tip).

Room Tip: Rooms that are in building 16 are not ocean front, when you book your room they are all considered...

We stayed here a couple of nights, the location on the beach was good, plenty of sun beds and great pool areas. The food in the main restaurant was good, plenty of selection.
The whole site was well laid out with great gardens. The hotel travel staff were more interested in promoting the Vaccation Club, than getting us an inexpensive island tour

Room Tip: Make sure you get a third floor room, the lower floor is dark because the blocks are surrounded by t...

Pros
- away from town but still only 20 minutes from the airport
- friendly staff
- beautiful beach
- no touble finding lounge chairs at the beach
- away from other resorts, no one else to share your beach with
- good snorkelling at the resort beach and even better a hundred feet south of the resort
- convenient and afforable snorkelling and diving trips right from the resort
- free kayaks, always several available
- clean, well cared-for grounds
- good variety of food, different things each day
- spacious bathroom with separate shower and tub with a fast supply of hot water and good water pressure
- complimentary safe in the room
- fridge in room stocked with complimentary pop, Corona and bottled water

Cons
- intense, disgusting, musty smell filled the room from the A/C system, it was probably riddled with mold. It was also very noisy. Fortunately we didn't need to use the A/C much
- paper thin doors separating our room from an adjoining room. We could hear every sound our neighbours made at all hours of the day
- the resort seems like an upscale, adult oriented destination but they allowed a group of a couple dozen kids come from Austin High School who ran around the resort vandalizing things, yelling, screeming, cursing, passing out on the sidewalks, vomitting in the bushes, and basically ruining the experience for everyone but them. Our trip only overlapped with these delinquents trip for two days or I'm sure I would have more examples of their bad behavior
- the mattresses are too firm, you will be stiff in the morning if you like to sleep on your side all night
- the sink and tub did not drain, we could have called for maintenance, but should not have to do that
- waiting in line for a table at the lunch restaurant
- waiting in line for a drink at the beach bar
- no free internet
- no cheap way to get into town, about $18 for a cab each way

Other
- they tried a few different ways to talk to us about timeshare sales but were never pushy
- breakfast served 7:00-10:30, lunch 12:00-4:30, dinner 7:00-10:00
- internet costs $80 for a week (there are cheaper options). The signal was strong enough most everywhere, even in some spots of the beach. Speed was mediocre but fine for browsing and email. We were able to use it on two devices concurrently.
- We were able to rent the cheapest car at the resort, a 5spd Atos with A/C, for $79 with full insurance.
- a one hour diving trip was $35 and gear was rented for $14 (everything but mask and snorkel)
- a two hour snorkelling trip to two spectacular near-by reefs was $30. There is also three reef trip for $40 but we were cold and tired after the shorter trip so the longer one may test an average persons endurance a bit too much

Room Tip: Don't get a room with an adjoining room!

In mid December our family of 8 went to this hotel for fun in the sun and sand through West-Jet. We had stayed at another O. Grand in Cartagena in January 2012 that we enjoyed so we thought we would try another here.
Check in was quick and friendly and we had time to go to the beach. However even after having asked in advance to be in the same building as our kids, we were'n't. A simple request to do so was accomodated immediately. Both families asked for and got mattress toppers immediately and a crib was delivered with a half hour when requested.
The rooms are large especially those numbered 3,4,5,6. The buildings are three stories high with 8 rooms per floor around a central courtyard. The grounds around the resort are well maintained and pretty. The kids really liked the roving igaunas and lizards. It is less than a five minute pleasant stroll from the furthest room to the beach. The walk across the bridge over the mangrove swamp is interesting. Stop to watch for turtles, crocadiles and birds.
The beach is coarse white coral sand that is easy on the feet. The beach is not too steep so even small children can play at the water's edge and with the coral reef off shore the waves that reach the shore are small. The snorkelling was very good inside the ropes with lots of sea life including a large barracuda (it will threaten by charging at you if approached but not harm you) that was watching over a large school of smaller fish.
The beach pool and the quieter small pool just across the bridge were clean and well maintained. The kids loved them.
The friendly activity staff had many projects for the 4-12 years olds to do everyday. There is a paint your own pottery stand that was very popularespecially for kids.
The food in the restaurants was average with lunch at the beachside restaurant the best. The selection at breakfast and supper was not huge but I suspect the resort was not full so they had cut back on choices. Food on the buffets was often cool and most potato dishes were undercooked. Staff was attentive and pleasant. Wine was drinkable and the mixed drinks were usually very good.
We were not hasselled at all by the time-share people after we said no thank you.
If you looking for an out of the way, quiet resort with a nice beach and rooms with decent food and drinks at a good price this is the place for you. We all agreed that we would go back to this resort again.

Room Tip: If you can try to get rooms ending in 3,4,5,or 6 (103, 206 etc) since they are biggerr and have a...
