My husband and I spent the week of December 9th through the 16th at the Occidental Grand, Cozumel.
We had our reservations about going all inclusive because we like to get out and explore the place we are visiting and eat at different restaurants. We decided on the Occidental Grand because after much research, it looked like a great place to stay and most of the reviews were quite good.
We were dropped off at the hotel after about a 30 minute van ride from the airport. We were greeted by the staff with champagne. I could not believe how beautiful the hotel was. Everything was just perfect. All of the buildings were vibrantly colored and beautifully constructed.
The grounds were lush and perfectly manicured. The resort was not too crowded while we were there, and I found the whole place to be quite serene. We did not upgrade to the Royal Club and I have no regrets about that. The room was very pretty. Th efloors were all marble with a neat rock pattern around th edges. The room was a cheerful yellow with tasteful decorations. We had a balcony with a jungleish view. The bathroom was large, with marble floors. The one thing that impresed me was how clean the room was, especially the bathroom. I am very picky about showering in places that feel less than clean, and I have to say this had to be one of the best I've even been in.
I thought the staff at the hotel was very hard working, friendly and professional. I did not find the service to be lacking at all.
My only 2 complaints about the Occidental Grand are this : 1. Our room had a strong musty smell. We actually switched rooms after the first night, and both rooms had an odor. I realize that Cozumel is a very humid place, and I am not sure that a whole lot can be done about the mildewy odor. Our clothes even smelled like the room after we returned. ACK!
2. My other complaint was the dining. Neither of us feel like we had a good meal from the Occidental. It is a shame because everything else is so great at the hotel. Their food quality comes no where close to the image they are trying to portray. Breakfast was fair, pretty much the same stuff each day. Lunches were lacking, although the view of the beach is quite nice. We ate dinner at Los Olives once which we both thougth was pretty darned bad, and the pizza place once which was also not great. We ate the rest of our meals in town.
We rented a car ( geo tracker, also mildewy LOL) for the week form the hotel which was worth every penny. Cozumel is a safe place with lots to explore. Riding in a taxi in Cozumel is like a thrill ride at a theme park, something I could do without. Driving in Cozumel is no problem.
The beach was being fortified while we were there, so part of it was all torn up The part that was not being worked on looked very nice. We went to other beaches on the island. We found some really great beaches on the east side of the island just begging to be explored. Chen Rio was great and the beach at Punta Sur Parque was magnificent. Those are only a few of the beaches on the east side.
We were constantly hounded by people selling time shares ( or time sharks as we called them). There were even workers at the Occidental Grand hounding us to go see other properties which I took offense to but politely declined.
You have to wear a bracelet all week which makes you a target for the time sharks. They should find a better way to identfy their guests.
We spent most of the evenings in town as the hotel was pretty dead.
We had a great time in Cozumel. The Occidental Grand is overall a very nice place to stay. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
