The Occidental Grand Cozumel resort was fantastic! My husband and I just returned 2 days ago and already miss it! Check in was a breeze, we were promptly whisked away to the Royal Club check in (we didn't stay in the Royal Club though), where they poured us a drink, checked us in, and directed us to our room. We stayed on the 3rd floor of building 19 and it was wonderful! Shortly after we arrived in our rooms our bags followed. We quickly changed out of our "Ohio Winter Wear" and into our "Cozumel Wear" and headed out to explore.
The beaches were great, the pools were great, the room was great. Everything was so beautiful! The grounds were perfectly maintained. The staff was excellent and very responsive.
I read reviews here for weeks before we headed to the Occidental Grand and read lots of mixed reviews on the food so was a bit nervous. However, the buffets were just great. Lots of variety at every meal and plenty to choose from. Drinks were refilled promptly and plates were taken away fast. I will say however, that by the end of the week we were ready for some home-cooking, but that's just us, not the fault of the their food.
As for bar service- we never once had a watered down or bad drink. Bartenders always remembered our drink order and gave us top shelf every time.
Also, one thing to keep in mind is, tips are included with the price you pay for your stay however they are greatly appreciated. We left $2 at every meal and $1 with every trip to the bar. That's not a lot though, I think that made the difference for us with the great service we got as well as top shelf liquer. Try it!
On housekeeping, they were great! Every day we left $2 on the bed for the maid and she really took great care of us. She restocked our fridge daily and we always had plenty of towels (2 showers a day for each of us and we never ran out). We even had a new towel creature every night. Turn down service was a bonus too!
The acitivities planned by the 'Fun Club' were ok too. We participated in just the BINGO and the nightly entertainment. We weren't really interested in the sports or anything, but they didn't bug us a bit. I never felt pressured to join in. They were all really friendly and outgoing.
As for Cozumel itself- shopping downtown was fun. I'm so glad we rented a car and were able to head there whenever we wanted. It appears Sunday is the only day with no cruise ships, so try to head there then. Otherwise try to go just as they are leaving around dinner time for the best deals. We never paid more than half of the original asking price for anything. We shopped a lot off of the 'main drag' too.
Driving- Be aware of scooters and taxis. They were a little scary at times. As far as getting around the island, it was really easy. From the airport, head West, towards the main drag (a left out of the airport- via a round a bout). When you see the ocean, turn right- that's the main drag- where most of the shopping is. Keep heading south out of town and you will eventually run into Occidental Grand on the left. It's about a 10 minute drive from downtown, 15 from the airport. To go to the east side of the island (see next paragraph) go right out of the resort parking lot. You will curve around the most beautiful costal roads. When the road ends at a bunch of little shops (approx mid-island) just go left with the road and you will end up right back to the main drag downtown. It's an easy and fun cirlce around the island. The roads on that route are all paved so don't worry if you didn't rent a jeep.
One last thing- DRIVE EAST. Get to the east side of the island. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Aqua Blue water, crashing waves, rocks, just stunning! There are a few beach side shops and small food stands and that's about it, but it's beautiful.
Overall, a perfect vacation!
