My family and I and a friend just returned from the Occidental Grand Resort in Cozumel and had an amazing time there. We were six in our group and did many activities on the resort and off. We found ourselves painting our own souvenirs on the beach "the seller is a friendly man and wife team" , relaxing on the amazing soft sandy beach, playing pool in the disco, going dancing at the disco "kids night" my 12 year old nephew loves to dance, and watching the nightly shows. We didn't swim too often in the pools as the water was cold, "they had just had a week of cool weather".
We also enjoyed the ride out to the coral reef to snorkle with the fish. My sister and her family were hesitante at first as she had been sick the day before on another excursion but decided to go and try it out. The men on the boat were extremely friendly and helpful. They teach you how to use the equipement and how to be safe in the water. I should say it was a Catamaran instead of boat. We visited two reefs but the first one was the best. OH IN CASE I FORGET PLEASE READ THE BOOK ON THE DEST IN YOUR ROOM TO GET A HISTORY LESSON ON THE ISLAND. THIS WILL HELP YOU TREMENDOUSLY. At least i learned quite a bit.
We also took a tour of the island. I would recommend it but would not do it a second time.. the water on the other side of the island is so awesome to see with the waves breaking on the beach. The options for the tour include either an air conditioned van or rent a jeep... You will visit the Tequilla factory and St Miguel. If you like to shop the shops in St Miguel offer all sorts of souvenirs and other goods.
I've read the other reviews and don't agree with them on the food... we absolutely enjoyed all our meals and with two boys ages 12 and 15 it isn't always easy to find something they will like. They ate like little pigs... lol... so did we... We did not try the other specialty restaurant as we don't like fancy dancy food but i heard that they put out good stuff.. we did try the pizzaria and like it very well..they make your dough right in front of you. OH THE BREAD IS ALWAYS FRESH AND YUMMY. The restaurant on the beach offers a wide variety of food and is always fresh.. the only unfortunately thing is that the food attracts flies. If you're use to eating out doors you'll be ok with this. If not then stick to the fruit and veg... the flies seem attracted to the hamburgers. Yes the burgers are frozen patties. We learnt that all the food is brought in from the Yucatan peninsula. Nothing is grown on the island for the resorts. So considering that they fly or boat the food in it is in amazing shape and always fresh hence the frozen patties.
The people are second to none in friendlyness. I found myself smiling all the time and they respond well to that and a warm hello. Like most people in the world they like to be treated with politeness. I loved meeting other people from Canada and the US.. everyone was friendly and enjoying themselves.. never heard any complaints.
Without a doubt my favorite time was at the Dolphin resort near our Hotel. We had the most amazing time with the dolphins. I got to kiss and touch and shake hands with two of them. This place is a must see for all dolphin lovers. We didn't swim with them but you can if you want to.. ask at the booking desk for info. We dealt with Air Canada and had mostly ok service. There are off course more things to do and to see.
Our rooms were well kept and cleaned daily. The shower is to die for. Our safe functionned ok but my sister and nephews had quite a bit of problems with theirs.
If i had to complain about anything it would be about not having enough water or beach activities to keep the teens happy. Adult only beach volley ball was the only one allowed, we asked if we could go play as a family and was told no.. My younger nephew was insulted by the activity woman when told he had to go play with the kiddies in their area. He is 12 and was very angry and upset. We finally got a ball from her and played in the pool.. that was the only time i could have told someone off..
I've been to the Mayan Riviera before and enjoyed it there also but because you face the East the waves are bigger and the currents stronger. I definetaly enjoyed this beach better as the waves were calmer and safer. I floated on a sea of bliss the times i was in the water. I would however recommend some sort of water shoe as the beach under the water is full (in some areas) of sea shells and whatnot.
I would recommend this resort to all my friends. We visited the Occidental Allegro and although the resort is beautiful i heard that the food wasn't.. Both places are amazing though. It is up to you to decide which one suit you best.
