We just returned from a week at the Grand and it was the best family vacation we've ever had. After reading the reviews on this board, I was somewhat hesitant, but I e-mailed some of the reviewers and evaluated their individual comments. Our experience there was wonderful...we are planning our next trip already.
We rented a car and visited four other AIs on the island and the Grand is by far the best choice. The grounds are immaculate and the staff is continually cleaning, mowing and maintaining the property. The rooms are very large and the bathrooms are wonderful--large, clean, excellent water pressure. A daily tip ensured lots of towels in beautiful designs, fresh flowers and a well-stocked refrigerator. We had no complaints about the accommodations at all.
I am not sure what the previous reviewer's problem was with the food and the restaurants. We stayed from 8/8-8/14 and had no trouble getting food whenever we wanted it. We had breakfast at La Posada as late as 11:00 am and the Beach Club was serving lunch by 12:00. The rooftop pizzeria was incredible and we found ourselves having midnight snacks there almost every night. La Posada is very nice, with linens, nice place settings, decent wine selections and a large variety to choose from. Yes, you do see alot of the same dishes each night--but there was enough variety to keep us interested for the entire week. We did eat at each of the specialty restaurants and especially enjoyed the presentation at La Hacienda and the delicious smoked pork at the BBQ grill. The drinks were readily available and contrary to others' comments, the bar at the relaxation pool was staffed every day from 11:00 until 5:00. The pico and guacamole were outstanding and the deserts were lovely to look at, with chocolate sculptures and lots of garnish. The coconut ice cream was terrific--my teenagers ate it with every meal. I agree that it was not always a 5-star dining experience, but it was good Mexican/Spanish cuisine--and considering that it was served buffet-style, we found it to far exceed our expectations. At the specialty restaurants, the food was beautifully presented and very creative. We had no complaints about the food at all.
The tap water gave us no problems. We drank from the tap, showered and brushed our teeth with tap water. No one had any stomach problems at all. Friends of ours who stayed at the Fiesta did not have this luxury--don't use the tap water anywhere else on the island! The Grand's filtration system appears to work very nicely.
Our family, which includes three teenagers (18, 16 and 15), found the resort to be a perfect combination of activity and relaxation. We took advantage of all the free watersports every day and used Dive Palancar for diving, snorkeling and parasailing. Tip: Don't expect the free daily sailing lesson--unless you tip generously, you will find that there is "not enough wind for a lesson today." However, a $5 tip got our family an individual lesson and virtually unlimited use of the sailboats during our entire stay. These were great, because they have ladders on them, and you can check out your snorkel gear, sail wherever you want to go, and have some really outstanding snorkeling adventures at your own pace. A small tip to the captain of the parasailing boat gave each of my kids a full 30 minutes in the air and a very long boat trip besides. Well worth the money!
Do bring lots of $1 bills and use them occasionally at the Beach Club, the restaurant and with your housekeeping staff. The five of us spent about $125 in tips during our 7 days, but our service was absolutely outstanding. Armando and Luis bent over backwards to make our drinks quickly and "mas fuerte," our plates were always removed quickly, drinks were refilled constantly, and our rooms were cleaned early in the day with fresh flowers, turn-down service and lots of bottled water and beer.
I can't comment on the babysitting services--although I will say the Kids' Club is well-appointed. We saw lots of babies and younger children with their parents hanging out at the pools, playing on the beach, etc. It was a better caliber of guests than I saw at the other resorts we visited in Cozumel. They were well-behaved, well-mannered and generally friendly people (which is more than I can say for some of the rude, drunken, wild party-goers we found at the other resorts).
Our family, which includes teenagers (18, 16 and 15) found this resort to be absolutely wonderful and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. We saw lots of families, but not many young singles, so if you are looking for a party resort, the Grand is probably not the choice for you. If you are looking for relaxation, a beautiful resort, plentiful and relatively good food, lots of water activities, and a room you enjoy coming back to at night, choose the Grand.
