We just returned from a week at the Grand and it was the best family vacation we've ever had. After reading the reviews on this board, I was somewhat hesitant, but I e-mailed some of the reviewers and evaluated their individual comments. Our experience there was wonderful...we are planning our next trip already.

We rented a car and visited four other AIs on the island and the Grand is by far the best choice. The grounds are immaculate and the staff is continually cleaning, mowing and maintaining the property. The rooms are very large and the bathrooms are wonderful--large, clean, excellent water pressure. A daily tip ensured lots of towels in beautiful designs, fresh flowers and a well-stocked refrigerator. We had no complaints about the accommodations at all.

I am not sure what the previous reviewer's problem was with the food and the restaurants. We stayed from 8/8-8/14 and had no trouble getting food whenever we wanted it. We had breakfast at La Posada as late as 11:00 am and the Beach Club was serving lunch by 12:00. The rooftop pizzeria was incredible and we found ourselves having midnight snacks there almost every night. La Posada is very nice, with linens, nice place settings, decent wine selections and a large variety to choose from. Yes, you do see alot of the same dishes each night--but there was enough variety to keep us interested for the entire week. We did eat at each of the specialty restaurants and especially enjoyed the presentation at La Hacienda and the delicious smoked pork at the BBQ grill. The drinks were readily available and contrary to others' comments, the bar at the relaxation pool was staffed every day from 11:00 until 5:00. The pico and guacamole were outstanding and the deserts were lovely to look at, with chocolate sculptures and lots of garnish. The coconut ice cream was terrific--my teenagers ate it with every meal. I agree that it was not always a 5-star dining experience, but it was good Mexican/Spanish cuisine--and considering that it was served buffet-style, we found it to far exceed our expectations. At the specialty restaurants, the food was beautifully presented and very creative. We had no complaints about the food at all.

The tap water gave us no problems. We drank from the tap, showered and brushed our teeth with tap water. No one had any stomach problems at all. Friends of ours who stayed at the Fiesta did not have this luxury--don't use the tap water anywhere else on the island! The Grand's filtration system appears to work very nicely.

Our family, which includes three teenagers (18, 16 and 15), found the resort to be a perfect combination of activity and relaxation. We took advantage of all the free watersports every day and used Dive Palancar for diving, snorkeling and parasailing. Tip: Don't expect the free daily sailing lesson--unless you tip generously, you will find that there is "not enough wind for a lesson today." However, a $5 tip got our family an individual lesson and virtually unlimited use of the sailboats during our entire stay. These were great, because they have ladders on them, and you can check out your snorkel gear, sail wherever you want to go, and have some really outstanding snorkeling adventures at your own pace. A small tip to the captain of the parasailing boat gave each of my kids a full 30 minutes in the air and a very long boat trip besides. Well worth the money!

Do bring lots of $1 bills and use them occasionally at the Beach Club, the restaurant and with your housekeeping staff. The five of us spent about $125 in tips during our 7 days, but our service was absolutely outstanding. Armando and Luis bent over backwards to make our drinks quickly and "mas fuerte," our plates were always removed quickly, drinks were refilled constantly, and our rooms were cleaned early in the day with fresh flowers, turn-down service and lots of bottled water and beer.

I can't comment on the babysitting services--although I will say the Kids' Club is well-appointed. We saw lots of babies and younger children with their parents hanging out at the pools, playing on the beach, etc. It was a better caliber of guests than I saw at the other resorts we visited in Cozumel. They were well-behaved, well-mannered and generally friendly people (which is more than I can say for some of the rude, drunken, wild party-goers we found at the other resorts).

Our family, which includes teenagers (18, 16 and 15) found this resort to be absolutely wonderful and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. We saw lots of families, but not many young singles, so if you are looking for a party resort, the Grand is probably not the choice for you. If you are looking for relaxation, a beautiful resort, plentiful and relatively good food, lots of water activities, and a room you enjoy coming back to at night, choose the Grand.

We just got back from a one week stay here and from the beggining it was bad. Let me start off by letting you know we are frequent travelers (6 trips a year) and we have never had any complaints with any accomodations in the past. We frequently stay at the hyatt and mariott or similar. We also were traveling with another family, which made us 8 people combined.

We arrived at the hotel at about 11am to be told our rooms would not be ready until 1 pm. Because this is an all inclusive resort we figured we would just grab something to eat. No the buffet does not open until 1pm. This was a big problem the whole trip. The breakfast buffet closes at 10:30 and lunch starts at 1pm. Lunch closes at 3:30 and dinner starts at 6:30. You will find most of your vacation is spent trying to make to the buffet before it closes. Speaking of food. If you like you food over or undercooked. Dry and tastless. This is the place for you.
While everything looks wonderfull, We were actually comenting that golden coral had better food than this. The rooms are very nice and include a minimally stocked refrigerator. Three kids of soda and bottled water. restocked every two days. After unpacking I called the Front desk to ask about storage of our suitcases because of the lack of room in the closet. She said with a rude manner that I could Pay for the room next to mine and stoe the suitcases in there. When I asked her for her name she replied she was the manager of guest relations and told me to have a nice day as she hung up on me. Babysitting nightmare: We decided to get certified for diving. this required leaving our 2 kids ages 2 years, and 6 months in babysitting. When inquiring about a price the girl told us $10.00 an hour. We explained that we would be leaving the kids every day and would like to work out a set price. She replied she would have to speak with her suproviser. apon returning we found they did not know how to feed the 6 month old (they were putting baby food in her bottle) and they had no training whatsoever. Anyway to make along story short she kept checking supposedly with the front desk on what rate she could give us and on the last day of our stay, I went to the front desk manager to find out what was going on, and he let me know that they determine they own rates. We paid just about $500.00 for one weeks babysitting. In america daycare centers dont even make this much. The staff was pretty much rude to any Americans. This was felt by everybody at the resort. Just another american. The family we were with has always stayed at the Iberostar and they said its 100% better. Hope this helps anyone looking for good accomodations

We just returned from the best vacation ever. The Occ Grand is beautiful. The grounds are lush and well groomed. Our room was spectacular. We stayed in a Royal Club room (worth the upgrade) and our service was wonderful (especially room service). Our consierge was Ana and she made all arrangements for meals. She was so helpful to provide whatever we needed. We were pampered by all who worked at the resort.
The bartenders by the pool were friendly and kept us very hydrated. The dive shop at the resort was great. We had a dive master named Alex who was very attentive to our needs. We were able to see so much during our drift dives. The days went by too quickly...we are planning our return for next summer. This resort is fantastic, but it is the staff that makes it worth the trip. You will not regret this trip to paradise!!!

My wife, daughter(13), me and another family of 5 stayed here from
August 3rd to August 7th. We found the rooms and grounds to be
extremely clean and very well maintained. Additionally, the
rooms(deluxe) were quite large and the bathrooms and showers were
great. Most hotel showers are small with little water pressure but
these were large with tremendous pressure....very handy when trying to
wash off all the salt water.
The food was "good" for an all-inclusive package with lots of varieties and extended serving times. Experience Hint: don't go to any all inclusive resort expecting the food to be the highlight.....
The a/c in our rooms was exceptional (although some folks have complained here about the noise of the unit, it was a non issue for us... cold air in hot temperatures and super high humidities is MUCH more important).
The hotel is enclosed on either side with THICK jungle and tall barbed wire fencing. The entry is protected 24hrs by a staffed security gate and the beach is heavily patrolled by multiple security guards that keep out the street vendors trying to sell you stuff all the time. We felt more than secure letting our kids run around on there own( we did make them take the walkie-talkies).
We tried scuba diving for the first time by being introduced to it via a free class at the pool. Wow...everyone must try this! We went on and did two more dives in the ocean with the most professional instructor (ask for Katrina) and just loved it. The ocean dives were extra, $58.00, but they included everything you needed.
The service was ok but if you want super clean rooms with fresh flowers and decorations, special attention at the restaurants and double strong drinks then tipping is a MUST..even though it is supposed to be an all-inclusive, and believe me, it does make a difference.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we are going back again in two weeks to get our scuba certifications (just no kids this time)!! Cozumel is very addicting if you explore the water and the towns a litttle.
We are definitely staying here again when we return!

My wife, and I, plus our daughter and her family stayed at the Grand from 26 Jul - 2 Aug and could not have been treated nicer. The facilities were top notch and the senior staff knew their job. The "Fun Club" crew at the beachside pool did everything they could to keep everyone involved or if you just wanted to sit and sun, that was OK also. The serving staff was courtious without being overbearing and you could keep your drink glasses as full as you wanted. The food was varied and good and the special meals were superb. Give it a try, you can't go wrong!!
