“An unexpected wonder in Cozumel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2009

When my wife and I began planning our next trip to Cozumel, we read good comments about Villas Las Anclas, near the downtown Plaza. We’d always stayed at the big resorts south of town and close to prime dive sites, and weren’t sure about this place. My wife is a light sleeper so quiet is a must, and we both hate long boat rides to the dive sites. But we also dislike feeling locked in at the all-inclusives – locked in both by distance to downtown and by the fact that we’ve already paid for it.

In emails, Pedro continuously assured us that noise and getting to the prime dive sites would be no problem. But isn’t that what they all say? We were still a little nervous when we got out of our cab in front of Villas Las Anclas for our week stay in the heart of downtown. Then Pedro and Eyal picked up our suitcases at the door, carried them to our room, gave us the key, and said, “Make yourselves comfortable. We’ll take care of the paperwork later.” We quickly found we loved our little condo.

While the big all-inclusive resorts have spectacular views and lots of activities, Villas Las Anclas is like visiting the home of old friends, friends like Pedro and Eyal. Their hotel, like an extension of their home, is extremely comfortable and relaxing. Artwork decorates the rooms and the courtyard. The rooms are very inviting, neat and well maintained.

Our fear that “downtown” and “quiet” were incompatible proved untrue – at least at Villas Las Anclas. Our upstairs bedroom loft was both quiet and comfortable. Noise was a non-issue. And our concern with getting to dive sites likewise proved unfounded. Cozumel is all about diving, with multiple dive shops on every block – all striving to stay alive by providing better service. With help from Pedro and Eyal, we hooked up with one that maintained a boat well south of town. With a quick $5 taxi ride we got to the boat and arrived shortly afterward at Palancar and other great sites.

The mini-kitchen in our condo, and the convenience of nearby grocery stores, enabled us to eat at home when we chose. When we wanted to go out, there were scores of good-quality, low-cost restaurants nearby.

Being downtown was the greatest treat. Sure, at the all-inclusives you get to choose from many activities that you’ve already paid for, but downtown we had the freedom to choose from a huge multiple of those activities, and we just paid for those we used. With our many walks we got to know the inland part of the city where the locals live and work, and found some great stores and restaurants. And we often found live entertainment, much of it free, during our strolls through the plaza.

After having now stayed in several of Cozumel’s big resorts and the little Villas Las Anclas, Las Anclas is the clear winner. Thank you, Pedro and Eyal, for letting us enjoy the comfort of your home.

Las Anclas is a very distinctive small hotel in downtown San Miguel. It is small - just eleven units or so around a small courtyard. Most of the guests are divers who return year after year. The rooms are duplex loft apartments with a small kitchen, dining area, and queen size bed in tshe loft. The units are spacious, feel extremely open, and are filled with light. Each one looks out onto a small individually designed garden. They really are architectural gems. Pedro and Ail are wonderful hosts and combine a perfect balance of attention and privacy. There is always a welcoming group of guests in the courtyard and is a wonderful place to make friends. I can't recommend it enough.

We visited Cozumel for the first time and stayed at Villas Las Anclas. VLA is a little oasis in the heart of downtown... steps from the water, the plaza, and restaurants. Our room was great, clean, very bright and open. The owners were wonderful...In short, we cannot wait to come back, stay at VLA....and relax.

We picked Villa Las Anclas based on recommendations from this site and we are really happy we did so. The hotel is a hidden gem in the heart of Cozumel.

Our two story Mexican style villa was neat, comfortable and stylish. The small kitchen was well equipped and we had unlimited supply of fresh bottled water. The rooms were serviced daily and each time we found a new towel animal on our bed. The bathroom looked like it was recently remodeled and the water pressure was very good (a luxury not many Mexican hotels have).

What we liked best about Villa Las Anclas is the personal service we were given from the owners, Pedro and Eyal. They were always eager to give us an advice or a recommendation and were very attentive to all of our needs.
We will defiantly be staying there again on our next visit.

Great jumping off place with plenty of space. We received excellent advice from the owners and they treated us almost as family. I would almost consider it cruise ship like service, we even had a different towel animal on our bed every day. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone that is looking to immerse themselves in Cozumel life!

Villa Las Anclas:

I booked this trip based on the reviews I read Trip Advisor. This was the first time that I ever travelled based solely on what I've read on this site.

I have to say, the reveiws on this place are accurate. This place is an oasis.

Pedro and Eyal are completely amazing. The reviews all mentioned them and they definitely held up to all expectations. You are actually treated like family here.

There is no door knob on Pedro's house. He wants you to walk in and call for him. He is 100% accomodating. One time, I caught him in the middle of shaving. He came out with shaving cream on his face to recommend a good restaurant for the evening.

We ended up running into Pedro and Eyal at a restaurant and I overheard Eyal ask for a table for six. (We were a group of 4) We did not end up eating with them as we did not want to disturb their evening...but again, I was amazed with the hospitality.

Pedro took care of booking our dives with Blue Angel Dive Shop. He made the phone call and set them up which was a good time saver for us. The dive shop was very accomodating. The boats were small (groups of 6 to 8) and fast. Even at the dive shop, they did not ask us to pay until we had completed our two days of diving. If I'm not mistaken, Pedro also owns Blue Angel. It is apparent that they are as well managed as Villa Las Anclas.

The rooms were very large. You have all the amenities. (Shampoo, conditioner, soap, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, refrigerator, cups, plates, silverware, COLD A/C).
It is not a luxury condo, but it is clean (how much luxury is there on Cozumel, anyway?).
The grounds are gated and you feel very safe. The sitting area outside the condos is beautiful. Many tropical plants surround a couple of comfortable sitting areas with plenty of shade.

V.L.A. is one block from the touristy/ocean front and two blocks from the town center with all the shopping you could need.

I highly recommend this place. My first experience in completly trusting Trip Advisor on accomodations was a complete success!

You cannot tell from the outside of the buidling what a gem this place is. As soon as the owner let us in, we discovered beautiful gardens and a shared space with tables and chairs and a mural on the wall. Each room is two stories, decorated modernly. The glass windows are so thinck you can't hear a thing when inside and the a/c works like a charm! We are not the big-resort types, so this worked perfectly for us. You can rent a car and park next door for five bucks and really see the island on your own schedule. We will be back with our friends!
