When my wife and I began planning our next trip to Cozumel, we read good comments about Villas Las Anclas, near the downtown Plaza. We’d always stayed at the big resorts south of town and close to prime dive sites, and weren’t sure about this place. My wife is a light sleeper so quiet is a must, and we both hate long boat rides to the dive sites. But we also dislike feeling locked in at the all-inclusives – locked in both by distance to downtown and by the fact that we’ve already paid for it.
In emails, Pedro continuously assured us that noise and getting to the prime dive sites would be no problem. But isn’t that what they all say? We were still a little nervous when we got out of our cab in front of Villas Las Anclas for our week stay in the heart of downtown. Then Pedro and Eyal picked up our suitcases at the door, carried them to our room, gave us the key, and said, “Make yourselves comfortable. We’ll take care of the paperwork later.” We quickly found we loved our little condo.
While the big all-inclusive resorts have spectacular views and lots of activities, Villas Las Anclas is like visiting the home of old friends, friends like Pedro and Eyal. Their hotel, like an extension of their home, is extremely comfortable and relaxing. Artwork decorates the rooms and the courtyard. The rooms are very inviting, neat and well maintained.
Our fear that “downtown” and “quiet” were incompatible proved untrue – at least at Villas Las Anclas. Our upstairs bedroom loft was both quiet and comfortable. Noise was a non-issue. And our concern with getting to dive sites likewise proved unfounded. Cozumel is all about diving, with multiple dive shops on every block – all striving to stay alive by providing better service. With help from Pedro and Eyal, we hooked up with one that maintained a boat well south of town. With a quick $5 taxi ride we got to the boat and arrived shortly afterward at Palancar and other great sites.
The mini-kitchen in our condo, and the convenience of nearby grocery stores, enabled us to eat at home when we chose. When we wanted to go out, there were scores of good-quality, low-cost restaurants nearby.
Being downtown was the greatest treat. Sure, at the all-inclusives you get to choose from many activities that you’ve already paid for, but downtown we had the freedom to choose from a huge multiple of those activities, and we just paid for those we used. With our many walks we got to know the inland part of the city where the locals live and work, and found some great stores and restaurants. And we often found live entertainment, much of it free, during our strolls through the plaza.
After having now stayed in several of Cozumel’s big resorts and the little Villas Las Anclas, Las Anclas is the clear winner. Thank you, Pedro and Eyal, for letting us enjoy the comfort of your home.
