“What A Treasure. . .”
Dropped in on a day trip to Cozumel from Playa week before last, and The Thirsty Cougar is our new favorite beach bar on the planet. The proprietors, Chad and Clara, along with the entire staff (both here and at Wet Wendy's) really have it dialed in. The vibe is very similar to the San Diego beach bars I grew up in during the late 70s/early 80s, with an amazing view out over the water back toward Playa del Carmen. Clara is a ball of fire who keeps the drinks and banter flowing with ease, and the drinks are nothing short of spectacular. The margaritas are stacked like miniature Matterhorns in their amply sized glasses, all set on Toon-themed plates to catch the inevitable overflow. The girls drank margaritas, while the guys stuck with nicely chilled, amply stocked, and exceedingly reasonably priced Bohemia Clara. We enjoyed this place so much we somehow missed our ferry back to Playa - no stress, though, just walked over to Wet Wendy's to kill an extra hour. Two days after our first visit, the wife and I make a special trip back over to Cozumel to kill a leisurely afternoon here, enjoying the view, sipping a few cocktails, and lunch. The ceviche mixto was beautiful, the grouper was pristine, and the onion rings are thing things domestic battles are made of (woe be unto the person who grabs the last ring without getting his/her spouse's approval). We made a full morning/afternoon of our visit to The Thirsty Cougar, and again, somehow managed to miss the ferry back to Playa. The only possible solution was a return visit to Wet Wendy's. We can't wait to get back down to kill a few days at The Thirsty Cougar just watching the world go by. Oh, if you do visit (and you definitely should) pray to the Cocktail Gods that Clara's special cocktail of the day is the strawberry-basil margarita. Wow! Just plain Wow!
