“Like going home again even though it was my first time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2011

We stayed at La Ceiba for the first week of January 2011. It was my husband and 6 year old and my inlaws. It was such a wonderful experience! It is a very welcoming enviroment. Everyone on the staff couldn't do enough to make sure we had everything we needed and were happy. I loved the intimate atmosphere of the smaller hotel. We got to know most of the staff and they greeted us daily by name and asked if we needed anything. We stayed on the 7th floor of the tower. I think the room was bigger than my house. It had a wonderful balcony that looked onto the ocean. Being a cruiser, I loved to watch the cruise ships come in and see where they were from and how big they were. We ate in the restaurant multiple times. The prices were inline with normal restaurant prices. Everything was wonderful. My favorite thing on the menu was the Seafood Risotto, to die for! Also, the guacamole and pico de gallo were out of this world. I also would recommend the xochitl soup, pronounced "cho chill", it was so great, I'm going to try to make it at home. The best snorkeling on the island is right in front of the hotel, so many fish! I can't wait to go back! Thank you to all the wonderful people at La Ceiba....Jaime, Alberto and Jorge in the dining room, Esther in reservations, Salvador the manager, everyone was superb! Also, the massages! So great, I had Diana and she was wonderful!

Also, the bed were VERY comfortable and pool quiet and not crowded, so great!

We LOVE staying at this place. The service and hospitality is impeccable! After you've been there, they remember you and you are family to them. Your wish is their command. The staff will bend over backwards to please. Yes, there really is no beach, per se, but there is snorkeling right off the edge..and the dive shop is right there too. Sitting at a table on the edge of the water watching the ocean and the cruise ships is an amazingly calming passion. Happy hour is from 4-6 every day. Salvador, the general manager is always walking around the premise checking things. If there is any litter lying around, he'll pick it up. He's not too good to do things or send someone else to do it! He brings his family there to enjoy the place on Sundays too. He was in the hot tub with his little girl last week. For what the place lacks, the service excels.

I cannot tell you how much my husband and I enjoyed our stay with EL CID. Most of the credit should go to the outstanding GENERAL MANAGER who took An OK Vacation and turned It Into One Of The Best We Have Ever Taken. MR SANCHES (SP) took care of our problem with a GRACIOUS SMILE. We are already planning our next visit. We were celebrating our 40 WEDDING ANNIVERSARY and he made it wonderful for us. We will always remember his kindness.

We found the hotel to be very clean with an extremely competent maid who cared for our room. The staff at the restaurant were always friendly and the food was very nice. We loved snorkeling right outside of the hotel. We realize that there is more to see from boats but you still could enjoy things at their spot as well. I highly recommend the all inclusive. Nothing is better than taking a dip and returning to your chair where a great waiter would bring you a mojita and a full lunch. It just doesn't get any better. I realize there are larger resorts with more aminities but El Cid was just perfect for us. We can't wait to come back to say hello to everyone.

We returned again, to the El Cid from the Princess Cruise Ship. My husband and I had massages in the open cabana near the ocean. I thought my last massage was good...this was super. Your gals are the BEST! We also enjoyed delicious refreshments with my husband's brother and wife. Thank you for such an enjoyable time off the ship.

We have stayed at the resort on many occasions. We have ALWAYS found the entire staff pleasant ,helpful, sincere. They have gone out of their way to make us feel like royalty. The resort is smaller more personable. El Cid has a great location, every thing is easy access. We have recommended it to many friends. You won't regret your choice to try the resort.

We stayed at La Ceiba the week prior to Christmas - very quiet, never crowded. If you have the right set of expectations, then this property is perfect. This was my fourth visit to Cozumel, but last time was early 1990's. First visit for kids.

We are a family of 4 - parents with 13 and 15 year old teenagers. Our room was a one bedroom in the "lower" secton - first floor, two patios with tables and sliding doors, walk right out to the "beach" area - very convenient to the restaurant, main lobby, pool, dive center. My 13 year old daughter slept on the murphy bed and our 15 year old son slept on the couch - never a single complaint. The room was great - both A/C units were as cold as you like, everything clean, plenty of room for the family. Having the bathroom / shower separate from the 2 sink areas was convenient for getting ready or taking a quick shower and not "hogging" the whole space. We did not use the small kitchen area.

This was a 6 day / 5 night trip, and I opted for the elite all-inclusive plan (remember, I am feeding a 15 year old bottomless pit :-). We loved it - ate breakfast and dinner every night at La Chopa - great food, and having the elite plan let us choose anything and everything from the menu (with the 1 lobster dinner exception). The food was wonderful, the wine was great, the Sol / XX / Tecate were ice cold - we NEVER had a bad experience. Waffles or crepes or quesodillas for breakfast; filet mignon, different shrimp combinations, risotto for dinner - thanks to Eli "Whitney", Virginia, Jorge and the entire crew for their smiles and excellent service. Nice singing, Elizier!

My son and I dove 3 days - a 4 dive day, a 2 dive plus night dive and a 2 tank day. Luis (dive master), Juan Carlos and Elizabeth at Babieca and the "Evil" Capitan Marisico were very laid back, accomodating and easy to work with. The Tara II boat does depart at 9:00 - we liked the later start, fit with an easy start to the day. We enjoyed the dives - of course, some more than others, but never a bad experience. Fast boat, small groups, all gear in order.

We rented a car (Hyundai Atos - very small 4 door) for $30 + $10 liability on a windy day - when the main harbor was closed during the morning and small craft were not on the water (i.e., no diving until close to Noon). Travelled to the back side - a must, especially if on first visit - eat at Coconuts. Jaime and Marcela at the Hotel Concierge were very friendly and helpful with arrangements. The kids also para-sailed, and Jaime set this up as well (all in excellent English). No surprises, no pressure, no gimmicks.

We ventured into town twice - but it just simply is not our style. Fun to see once - an experience for the kids.

Now, to address some of the reported negatives (I read all the TripAdvisor reports before booking - thanks to all!!). 1) No, this is not a big, new or fancy place, like possibly Royal Park - if that is what you desire, spend the extra money and go elsewhere - be happy; 2) There is a small, true beach area - but the large sandy area with palapa huts and numerous chairs is great - again, if you want wide open beaches, go elsewhere - perhaps even another island; 3) Yes, water from the bathroom shower area does get on the tile floor (outside the shower) - eees OK!; 4) Pressure on time-share sales - tell Marcela or Jaime that that is of no interest to you, and you will not hear of it again; 5) Hot tub - temp does vary, but goes from warm to hot - again, eees OK!; 6) Cruise ships at the International Pier - yes, they are - but we enjoyed seeing the variety of ships, and their departure usually coincided with our dinner hour, so fun to see them depart at night - no problem or irratation, otherwise; 7) Small work out room - yes, three different machines - go for a run towards the south end of the island, or maybe a swim, instead; 8) free Wi-fi (not blazing) is available - but best connection in the lobby and La Chopa.

Final observations. 1) Go for the ground floor on the "low" side - convenient to everything; 2) If you are staying longer than 6-7 days, then you will probably desire a change of restaurants (simply for variety of atmosphere); 3) Attend the beach bar-b-q nite - have the chef grill you a GREAT rib eye and enjoy the evening; 4) If you are NOT diving, or reading on the beach (and there is a tennis court), then you may wish for additional activities; 5) Smile, interact with the wait staff, and relax - the staff will do everything they can to help your stay be enjoyable.

Have the right expectations, and La Cieba will be perfect!
