We stayed at El Cid the week of July 10th. We did not encounter any of the problems the previous review stated. When we arrived, we inquired about the all inclusive. We were told to check out the menu first because it was different. We had a wonderful meal the first night there but decided against the all-inclusive because it is a very limited menu, but the regular menu was very reasonable and had great selection. We ate everything from nachos and tacos to steaks and lobster. (The lobster was excellent by the way!) We enjoyed the wait staff and did not encounter any "begging for tips". The service was always prompt and very courteous. The rooms were humid, but considering the humidity outside we didn't think twice about. The concierge was extremely helpful in booking things to do for us. All we had to do was tell her what we were interested in and she set everything up. We are timeshare owners and did go on their timeshare presentation. It was a very low pressure sales pitch. (Much nicer people than some of the presentations we have been to in the states.) After the presentation we tried a "day-pass" for the all-inclusive. It was good for one day. We were traveling with 3 kids (2 teenagers) so the menu was good for them. (Cheeseburgers, tacos, nachos, chicken sandwich) We hung around the pool and went snorkeling all day. It was great! We would definitely stay there again and are looking forward to the opening of the resort in Cancun.

We had booked an all inclusive stay for 5 nights at the La Ceiba. The air conditioner leaked the whole time we were there onto our bed and us. There was no hair dryer or remote for the TV as should have been. First night asked for these items and didn't get until late the 2nd day after asking 3 more times for them. The toilet seat broke, reported it, came and took it off but never returned to replace it until 6 hours later complained again. The all inclusive is a separate menu from paying customers and very few choices. When the waiters or bartenders see that you have an armband for all inclusive, they take their sweet time to get to you. Especially the bartender. Most all inclusives include the domestic beers, such as Corona, Tecate, etc. not here all you get is the cheap beer, Superior and margaritas are made with cheap tequila. Be aware that the all inclusive stops at breakfast your last day there. They do not inform you of this, so we had lunch just before our 12:00 check out and found that we had to pay $52 US for this lunch. The hotel has no beach per say, but is on the water, go figure. It is 2 1/2 miles from town so it cost anywhere from $6 to $8 one way to town. We will never stay at this hotel ever again and don't suggest it. If you want to stay at a real nice all inclusive hotel, stay at the Allegro (we had stayed there 3 yrs ago, but my husband wanted closer to town this time) which is at the end of town so you would need a rent car or pay around $12-$15 one way for taxi. Rent car is worth it. The Allegro has 4 restaurants and you get all the domestic beers and good tequila. They have lots of activities to do where La Ceiba had none. Allegro is a great place and we will go back there next time we go.

All I have to say is stay away from the 3 story rooms to the right! They are horrible! The humidity was so heavy in the rooms that nothing would dry and paper felt like it had been dumped into water! The rooms in the tower are alot nicer and we had alot less problems in the tower rooms. Overall I, personally, was not too thrilled about Cozumel.

My fiancee and I just got back from a weeks stay at El Cid La Ceiba. Neither of us was happy with our experience there. We stayed at La Ceiba because it was a free vacation through Carnival Cruise Lines. We were grateful that this was an experience we were not paying for.
When we first arrived, it seemed like a cute place. We arrived early, so our room was not ready yet...which was fine. Luckily we are both under 30 so we did not get bombarded with the timeshare sales while we waited;although we see a lot of people who were.
Before we arrived, we decided to upgrade to the all inclusive package because we thought we would take advantage of it. We were told that the menu was alittle different and when asked what was different, we were told that it excluded lobster and steak. Thinking that it would be fine, we signed up. We should have trusted our first instincts. As other reviews have said (we wish we had read them before coming) all inclusive at this resort is not all inclusive. We had a very very selective menu and the food was not great by any means. My finacee had a very limited supply of beer (all of which were served to him warm in a small glass) when other paying customers got icey cold bottles of whatever they liked. The second day, we went to the front desk to cancel the package and were told that we were not able to. After several minutes of talking, we were finally able to get credited the remaining days, but were told we had to keep the package until after the third day. After that, we rarely ate at the hotel.
The location of the hotel was not very ideal for someone looking to enjoy the island. It was far from downtown (a $4 taxi ride each way). We ended up renting a car and a moped to drive ourselves around while we stayed.
The worst part of the trip was our room. As you read in other reviews there was a smell near the elevators... Well our room was next to the broken elevators (everyday one of the was out of order). it smelled like a sewer, constantly.
The beach looks nothing like what it is described to be. It was very tiny with not very many chairs and was often overcrowded with the crew from the neighboring cruise ships (at least three a day were docked at the nearby pier). This did not set the scence for a relaxing vacation sitting on the beach. The cruise ships were docked so close that you could hear the captains talking as the cruisers disembarked and embarked the ship everyday. You also got the pleasure of hearing the horns when the ships were leaving, regardless of the time.
My fiancee and I made the best of our vacation, not with the help of La Ceiba but because we left the hotel to find our own things to do. We definitely would not recommend this hotel for anyone to stay at.

We were treated very well. The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. We had the all inclusive, so we got "that special menu", but were very satisfied with every meal. With lunch and dinner your served fresh salsa and chips. I want some right now! On Wednesday nights there is a buffet and breakfast you can have an omlet or eat off of the buffet. We ordered bottled water with our meal and ordered 4 more when we left so we could put it in the refrigerator in our room so we would't get the Doo Doo's. lol. We did the timeshare and got to rent our snorkle gear for two dollars a day per person. If you don't do this, then it will cost you nine dollars per person. We went to Xel Ha. this was a very expensive trip. its $18 per person on the ferry round trip, and thats not included in the trip. With our discount it was still $160.00 for 4 people. There were so many people there the water was cloudy. Our advise is to save your money and stay at the hotel. The snorkling is excellent and there is plenty of marine life there, keep your snorkle overnight and go around 7 p.m. and will see differnt things than you see in the morning. We went into town and rented 2 mopeds from Tommys Mopeds....STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. THE ONE I DROVE BROKE DOWN ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE ISLAND AND THE NEXT DAY I WENT WITH THEM TO GET IT AND THEY ACCUSED ME OF WRECKING IT. WHEN WE GOT HOME, THEY HAD CHARGED OUR CREDIT CARD $185. WE REFUSED THE CHARGE AND THAT WAS ALL OF THAT. THEY ARE A VERY VERY DISHONEST BUSINESS. OUR ADVISE IS TO GET A CAR. STAY AWAY FROM THE MOPEDS IT IS SOOOO DANGEROUS. When we go back, The La Ceiba is where we will stay again. On sunday nights, take a taxi into town to the square. there is a fiesta with music and dancing, artists, and everyone trying to sell you something from thier store. One caught my wife and showed her an opal necklace, wanting $85. She offered $40 and got it. Next to the hotel is the dock where the ships come in. There is another place to shop. Guess what we bought. Another necklace. they wanted $48, we got it for $20. Lots of fun and will go back as soon as we can. STAY AWAY FROM TOMMYS MOPEDS !!! please feel free to contact us anytime. imagoodn@sbcglobal.net
