“Overall a good little hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2009

We stayed at El Cid through out timeshare and brought friends with is who booked through Expedia. We both booked suite rooms with kitchens but were given hotel rooms as no suites were available. The room next to our had a kitchen and we were told the 4 of us could use that room after the guest checked out later in the day. The guest never checked out so we decided to wait until the next day to find rooms with a kitchen. During the first night we were there our air condioner died. A man came the next day to fix it but it needed a new compressor. After that they moved us to 2 suites on the first floor. The view was not as good but it was convenient to the beach and restaurant. The bath products were lovely.
We ate a few times at the restaurant and found the food there to be excellent. Luis (or Louis) was a wonderful waiter. We can't say enough about him. He was friendly and brought us drinks and food very quickly. The drinks were awesome. Excellent Margaritas!
During our stay our friend walked into a glass sliding door and injured his shoulder. We had to visit the Cozumel clinic and were quite impressed with the service.
This resort is not high class but is clean and friendly. A few negatives are the cruise ship people who monopolize the lounge chairs and beach and were quite loud. Also the resort should provide drinking water as we were only given 1 small (10-12 oz) bottle of water all week. The rest we bought at the grocery store.
All in all it was a great time and we enjoyed our stay.

“Loved the Snorkeling!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2009

My husband and I really enjoyed our visit at El Cid. In order of fairness, I will first share our good and then some irritating experiences.

The snorkeling from the resort was tremendous - WOW - I have never in my life seen so many different kinds of fishes! La Chopa served excellent food and drinks. Even though the menu was limited, we found it to be of the highest quality. The breakfast buffets were a great way to start the day and varied a bit each day. The wait staff was VERY attentive - Luis was awesome and Leonardo was the most wonderful bartender. His margaritas are the best we have ever experienced in Mexico. Smiles.

Cindy, our timeshare salesperson was understanding of our reason to not buy and was not pushy and irritating. We dreaded sitting thorough our presentation, but she made it enjoyable; however, Joe - the boss - was rude. I would recommend her to anyone who is interested in El Cid and Cozumel.

The resort had a wonderful private lagoon - BUT - it was closed for two separate days for special occasions. This was very irritating as it was a quiet spot to spend time relaxing and reading. Two of the downfalls of the resort are the fact that they "sell" day packages to the cruise ships who dominate the chairs, snorkeling equipment and the food. It seems that the every day patrons of the resort should be able to experience it without the crowding of the cruise passengers. Also, we have been to timeshare resorts before and never had to sign for things. El Cid requires you to sign for each and every time you order an item. It was annoying signing for bottled water, drinks & food. I could not understand the reason behind it since we had an all inclusive bracelet on at all times. We offer our sincere thanks and kudos to the food manager for running such a wonderful operation with his most attentive staff. Loved spending time with them! Overall wonderful experience.

  • Disliked — cruise ship passengers and signing for everything

Dear Madame,

On behalf of everyone who works here at El Cid La Ceiba, we would like to thank you for you comments. Our guests' comfort is our number one priority and we are very glad that you were happy here. We hope we can see you soon again so we can pamper you even more.

We are sorry you found the Cruise ship passengers irritating, but we have to cater to all our customers equally. Next time you're here, you can approach the front desk or any of the staff, and ask to have some lounge chairs reserved, we'd be more than happy to do so.

We're very honored that you chose El Cid to spend your vacations in, and we hope to see you again soon in your home away from home.

Kind regards,

Salvador Sanchez Meza

“An OK stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2008

We just returned from a trip to Cozumel and stayed at our timeshare, El Cid La Ceiba. Scheduling our stay went well and we received the room we asked for. The room was very nice as it was a one bedroom apartment and the furnishings were updated and nice. The beds were a little hard and the rooms were without clocks which was somewhat annoying when you have reservations for certain events. There is only one restaurant on the property (dont do the all-inclusive, not worth the money unless you can drink your moneys worth). The restaurant serves good breakfast and lunch but dinner was a little less than desirable. If you charge your meals to your room make sure you keep track of what you spend (total for bill, total for tip, date and time). You do not get a receipt until you check out and our bill had over $150 worth of charges that were not ours and possibly more but we did not keep track. When we disputed them they took them off immediately. Be ready to leave a tip for everyone for everything! We go to all parts of Mexico all of the time so his trip was no surprise to us as it seems that all areas do the same thing. Just be a cautious consumer and know what you are paying for! Trip overall was good and would reccommend El Cid because it is a smaller resort where you do not get lost among hoards of tourists. It is on the ocean and the dive shop was extremely accomodating. Not many people go out at a time and you pretty much have a dive boat to yourself. Not a cattle-call type dive operation and dive masters are very patient and informative.

“Fantastic resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2008

We went to spend the day at this property when our cruise ship docked in port. What a wonderful facility. We took advantage of the spa. We had the best massage ever. I had never had a massage outside by the ocean. What a wonderful experience. We also ate lunch at the restaurant. We had wonderful service and such good food. The staff is so friendly and wanting to make one's stay very pleasant.

“Wonderful place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2008

My family stayed at El Cid at the end of October 2008. We could not have had a better experience. From the moment that we checked in and had a delicious welcome drink, to the sad moment when we checked out, we were treated as family!
The rooms were clean and well stocked- the balcony offered gorgeous views of the resort and ocean.
The property was well cared for and was beautiful to walk around, I especially loved the tide pool. The snorkeling was the best I have ever done.
The food was delicious and every attempt was made by the staff to meet our needs. The staff was so freindly and helpful.
We had a lot of fun, and it was relaxing for my whole family.
We cannot wait to come back as soon as we can!
