“Seamless Transition”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012

We visited La Ceiba again April 22 to 29 and were saddened that our old friend, Salvador Sanchez Meza, the general manager, had been promoted to a new position within the ECVC organization. He will be missed by many. The good news is that the La Ceiba did not miss a beat in providing excellent service, food, and the very best of Mexican hospitality. This is a great credit to the standards that Salvador demanded and the quality and depth of the La Ceiba staff. Give credit to the efforts of the management (Roberto, Food and Beverage Manager, Crisanto, La Chopa Manager, Jorge, Assistant La Chopa Manager, and Esther, Rooms Manager). We met the new general manager, Andres, and have great confidence that he will maintain the tradition of excellence at La Ceiba. Despite being very busy with his new job, Andres found the time to welcome us and many other guests and we look forward to seeing him again.
The weather was as good as it gets in Cozumel on our visit, 75 degrees and no humidity -- we just opened our balcony door and enjoyed the sea breeze every day and night.
We ate many meals at La Chopa (the open air restaurant on the resort property) and as usual the meals were wonderful with great service. Our favorite meal is breakfast as we look out over the beautiful Caribbean and enjoy the fresh fruit and other great foods. We have visited many places and have not found a wait staff that can compare to the professional and friendly service we receive at La Chopa. Many thanks to Alberto, Fausto, Luis, Armando, Benecio, Pedro, Williams, Eli, Wilberth, Miguel, Vicky, and Juan. Paulino and Leo provided their usual friendly service at the bar, as did Guadalupe and Miguel.
The beach BBQ with live music was great as was our romantic dinner for two (celebrating my wife's birthday). Armando, assisted by Benecio and Wilberth, gave us a wonderful dinner and experience on the pier. La Chopa is blessed with a great executive chef, Javier Pachecco, and we have discovered that La Chopa is one of the finest restaurants in Cozumel. More people should take advantage of it when they stay at La Ceiba.
Once again, we treated ourselves to a massage at the Cocay Spa and were not disappointed. This is the epitome of total relaxation and we had a hard time staying awake during dinner because we were so relaxed.
We had our usual friendly and informative chat with the concierge, Marco, and found out some neat things to do on the island as well as all of the local news. Our room and maid service were excellent -- typical of Esther Zapata's standards. We also had time to talk to Cain, the activities director, and catch up on island events.
Our favorite moment at La Ceiba is getting off the free shuttle from the airport (15 minutes away) and seeing Natalio or Arcadio, the doormen, and stepping into the lobby of our home away from home and checking in with Babiena and the other staff at the front desk. Needless to say what we dislike the most is checking out.

Room Tip: Rooms in the tower have great views, especially the sunsets. The rooms on first floor of the garden...

My wife and I recently spent two weeks at El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel in Cozumel. We did 10 dives while there at their on-site dive center, Babeica Dive Center. My wife has been certified since 1976 and has gone diving in many countries over the years, and I was Advanced Open Water certified last year. We were very pleased with the dive shop. Juan is a friendly and helpful manager and our captain, Mariano and dive master, Luis were excellent. The boat is fast and they take no more than eight divers. We never went to the same site twice. Luis gave excellent instructions above and below water and kept us all together, quite a feat on some of those fast drift dives! We did need to rent equipment and theirs was excellent and in good shape. We plan to return to Cozumel and dive with them again in the future, hopefully sooner than later!

La Ceiba is right on the beach and has very easy access to snorkeling which is the main reason I go to Cozumel. Within 10 feet of getting into the water there are all kinds of fish and plant life. For days when we are not up for driving around this is great.

The staff is very nice and helpful. We stayed in a suite for 4 in the tower - it has 2 bedrooms, a living room / dining area / kitchenette, 3 full baths and 3 balconies. It was perfect and great to be able to cook in some of the time. They keep it very clean.

There is a small pool and jacuzzi with a swim up bar, a good place to relax after a day.

The location is south of town and close enough that it is easy to get in a car or cab to go there quickly or to stores or to other nice snorkeling sites on the island.

The only drawback is that cruise ships dock just south of the hotel but they are very entertaining to look at.

We intend to go back next year.

Room Tip: Decide whether you want to be able to walk out onto the beach easily, or whether you want to be in a...

My husband and I just spent two weeks at El Cid La Ceiba in Cozumel. The rooms were lovely, the front desk, restaurant, housekeeping and concierge staff very friendly and helpful. Marco was especially helpful at the concierge desk. The on-site dive shop, Babeica Dive Center, is excellent and I've been a certified diver for over 30 years. We were also able to rent good cars from Thrifty with Marco's help at a very reasonable rate with no hassle. The only drawbacks were the many cruise ships parked very close by and the fact that although there's a nice cordoned-off place to swim, there was no actual beach. But we still got plenty of time gazing out at the ocean without cruise ships blocking out the view, and there is a pool and many beach chairs on the sand right by the water. It was a quiet and low-key resort, which was perfect for us. I highly recommend staying at El Cid La Ceiba in Cozumel.

This hotel is older, a little worn and very quiet. But it fits our needs perfectly. It's our 4th stay and we keep coming back. The rooms have cooking facilities with a small refridgerator, microwave and a small stove. Dishes are provided. This makes it nice because you can do a small amount of cooking in the room and don't feel like you have to eat out at every meal.

The hotel is a little worn but very clean. Maid service is excellent. The rooms are dated and desperately need new TV's, furniture and linens. WiFi service in the hotel is spotty which needs to be imporoved. Restaurant on site has good food at reasonable prices. Snorkeling in front of the hotel is quite good. Pool and hot tub are great. Waiter service on the beach area is not the best. Front desk people and doorman are helpful.

There are a few good restaurants near the hotel but we like to venture out and explore with the locals. The spa and it's services are wonderful!

This hotel just got a new manager this week so maybe things will improve. A little updating would help a lot.

If you want a hotel that is quiet, laid back and clean this is the place for you especially if the decor does not matter to you. Will will be back.

We got the "freebie" stay at El Cid for buying 2 other trips...We haven't decided if we will do an exchange there or do one at the Park Royal. By just looking at the two it would be a no brainer but the only thing that would make me go back to El Cid is sitting on the pier or at waterside in the restaurant for breakfast. The beach section of Park Royal was dark at night...I can sit by a pool here at home.
I don't know what the tower rooms look like but our room was shall we say basic and clean and utterly blah and bland. It's not like we spent tons of time in the room...not really enough sleeping either but let's say we could do an HGTV make-over and it wouldn't hurt things at all. For a country that explodes in glorious color, one pastel palm print just doesn't quite cut it.
There was a 2 burner cook top, fridge, dishes and all that good stuff plus a toaster, blender, coffee maker and microwave. I don't believe in cooking when we're on vacation....coffee and tea-making is it!

The restaurant was pretty good, we only ate there for rainy dinners and a couple of breakfasts...you can't beat Nutella crepes! There was a pizza place advertised but it wasn't open, ditto another bar.
I think someone has said its best asset is the staff and we agree. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. We had a couple early morning taxis to take and we had no problems...they took very good care of us! I think we did disappoint as we had all our trips planned through other sources...
As for snorkeling there's probably better places with more coral, etc but for the new ones we were quite happy with our 3 ventures. It wasn't too rough and there were plenty of fish to go around for the sometimes dozen or more snorkelers out at one time.
There is a shop just outside the doors of the hotel, water, soda, sweets, over-priced batteries you forgot....but it is there. There's also 2 ATMs, one pesos and one USD....had no problems with outrageous fees as I've read about here on the forum.
I hate to judge the El Cid on such a silly basis as lack of decorating but color is kinda expected in Mexico don't you think? I really think tho it will be sitting on the pier at night that will seal it.... We will make up our minds --will go to Cancun before going back to Cozumel. Maybe they will take the comments I left seriously and go shopping in the market...or give us a room for a week and a budget and I will do it myself! Woo hoo!

Room Tip: I don't know about any of the other rooms but ours also had a Murphy bed in it...had we needed t...
