We just got back from a week at the Casa Mexicana. We were there in Feb. of 2005 and were relieved to see that they are up and running again. Our primary concern was hurricane damage. From the pictures we had seen after the hurricane hit, it looked like it would be awhile before anything would be happening in Cozumel. I was amazed as we drove from the airport to the hotel. I could tell that there were a lot of trees missing from the Zocalo, (central town square) but there was no other noticeable damage. I am still puzzled. We purchased a DVD of the hurricane. It showed that there were parts of the sea wall and the road that had been washed away after the storm. It also showed that most of the stores were gutted, and the streets were knee deep in debris and seaweed. You would never know it now. When we were able to walk around and get a closer look, it was obvious that there is still a lot of reconstruction going on. The shopping center for the cruise ships is not completely open. Most of shops in the rest of the city are alive and well.
The most amazing sight is the cruise ship peer. They are in the process of rebuilding the downtown peer but they have some work to do. It is hard to believe that it was only water that was able to smash the concrete decking. There are massive chunks of concrete hanging like leaves from steel rebar. Even more incredible is the cruise ship peer south of town. It is just not there. You can see where it started and a few traces of it here and there but if you had not seen it, you would not know there had been a peer at that location. This was a very destructive storm.
The game we played all week was “spot the hurricane damage.” We stayed at the Casa Mexicana last year and had a great time. In looking the hotel over, you would have to conclude that it was miraculously spared. Other than the fresh paint and some problems with a large banana palm in one of the planters, we could not find any evidence of damage! I can only say that Casa Mexicana is better than ever.
As you can see from the other reviews, everyone seems to agree that this hotel is a gem. The service is always friendly, the hotel is spotless, and it is a beautiful oasis at the end of your day. If I noticed any change, it might be that the breakfast buffet was even better this year. Every room comes with a free breakfast. In most hotels, this would be watered down fake orange juice and jelly roles. The breakfast buffet at Casa Mexicana has to be one of the best ever. There is so much to pick from that everyone will be happy. I liked the Mexican dishes, which were different every day. If I am going to a foreign county I like to experience something that I wouldn’t get at a Holiday Inn. One of the additions this year was a powerful juicer. You could chose from a basket of fresh vegetables or fruit, to make your own juice (if you don’t care for the fresh squeezed orange or grapefruit juice in the dispenser).
We had one of the best rooms in the hotel. We were on the top floor with a panoramic ocean view. It is the best place on the island to enjoy the sunset and to sip a cocktail. There are a limited number of ocean view rooms but they are more than worth the extra price. The lobby is another nice place to sit with a cocktail. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, it would be worth a visit to sit and enjoy a cocktail at sunset. The lobby is actually one floor above street level so you can sit and watch the cruise ships come and go. (The ships are not able to use the peer, but they anchor in front of the town and use shuttle boats.) I think the bar service is also an improvement over last year. I don’t remember using the lobby bar last year. We spent some time in the lobby this year to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi service. It was nice to have an ice cold Sol beer in the afternoon or a little Kahlua in a lounge chair before going up to the room after dinner.
Most of the restaurants on the island seem to have made it through the storm and are back in operation. Two of our favorites, Mesa 13 and the Aquarium Restaurant are gone this year. I’m not sure what happened to Mesa 13. Their location is still there but they are gone. The Aquarium was right on the water and was smashed. I hope they will be back in business for our next trip. The Mission is a good choice close to the hotel, authentic Mexican music that was actually pleasant. Palmeras is on the Zocalo and has the best Ceviche in the city. If you were looking for something a little more gourmet, it would have to be Guido’s. They are on the water, just a few blocks north of the Zocalo.
If you have read other reviews, you may know that this hotel does not have a beach and the pool is mostly for a quick dip to cool off. It is not the best hotel if you are looking for a place to sit in the sun. It is ideal if you like to dive. We were delighted to hear that the Aqua Safari dive shop also survived the storm and did not lose a single boat. They are located about 50 feet from the front door of the hotel and their dock is across the street from Casa Mexicana. Nothing could be more convenient. They have 4 large boats and one “fast boat” that has a maximum of 8 divers. The crew and the dive masters are great. They said their business has been a little slow since the hurricane but it was nice to see many of the same personnel from last year. We noticed some changes to the underwater flora and fauna. Even at 80 feet you could see that there was more sand and that some of the large sponges were gone. If we hadn’t been there a year ago I’m not sure I would know that there had been a change. It is still one of the most beautiful dive sites on the planet. The water clarity was absolutely amazing, there are fish everywhere and there seemed to be an abundance of large lobsters and green eel this year.
If you were having any hesitation about a trip to Cozumel because of the hurricane, I would not hesitate to stay at Casa Mexicana. I was told that the resorts on the north and south ends of the island were hit harder and may take longer to recover. Casa Mexicana and the restaurants in the city are good to go now. The good news is that there are not as many cruise ships in town these days and you can enjoy it even more.
