We stayed at the Casa Mexicana this last weekend and had a very nice, relaxing time.
First, as noted by other reviews, if you're looking to stay at a hotel with beach access and a big pool, this isn't the hotel for you. It is on the waterfront though, and we were close to a lot of restaurants and shopping on the main strip. Great view of the ocean with the boats and cruise ships passing by. The ferry dock was about a 10 min walk away. It was nice to be able to stay in-town to get a better feel of Mexico, even though it is the "touristy" area. It is a $12-16 taxi ride to the beach, and $7 to Dzul Ha for snorkeling. $5 back to the airport.
The rooms were very clean, I'd give them a 10 for cleanliness. That was a big reason I chose Casa Mexicana because this hotel was noted for being extremely clean from every review I read, and I am very picky about hotel cleanliness. "Animals" made from bathtowels each day placed on the bed was a nice touch. I've stayed at mixed-reviewed hotels in Mexico and they really are hit or miss, even at the so called 4 stars, so Casa Mexicana was great.
I read a few complaints about the rooms with a "partial" oceanview, and I specifically emailed them to make sure I didn't get stuck with one of these. So I was disappointed when I opened the curtains to see a big white wall obstructing half of our ocean view. Avoid rooms ending in _04.
Other notables...
Breakfast was above average...great considering it was free. =)
Free computer room with wireless internet was excellent since I need to stay connected.
There's a small dipping pool with some lounge chairs and small bar overlooking the ocean. Nice for a brief stop, but not to make a day out of.
If you are a light sleeper, and if there is noise in the lobby either in the morning or evening, it may bother you.
Beds were soft yet firm. One reviewer said they had replaced all the rock hard beds from before. Definitely great quality beds.
To summarize, if you're looking for a very clean hotel with good service, no unpleasant surprises, that is in town and is relatively close to everything, I'd highly recommend Casa Mexicana.
