We just got back from a ladies long weekend at the Park Royal. I've stayed in a couple of resorts in Mexico that were much more expensive. This one exceeded my expectations. I am not sure why there were many of the negative comments we've heard. I've stayed at Palace resorts and while the Park Royal is not as plush, it is a really beautiful place.
When you are on property, you do not feel like you are right on the road. There is enough buffer with the buildings, trees and other "tropicana" that you forget where you are. There are lots of birds around all the time, so you feel like you are isolated.
For the price, you absolutely cannot beat it. The resort is not so huge that you have to walk a mile to get places, which we loved. The food was very good - Caribbean was our favorite, then Mexican and Italian last (but it was still good). The buffet had lots of good choices for breakfast and lunch - it was perfect.
The bars and snack bars were conveniently located by the pools. Drinks were strong, which is always good! Service throughout the hotel was great. No one approached us about timeshares. The walk under the street to get to the beach area was absolutely no big deal. We loved that area! There are two infinity pools and you could be right by the ocean watching the cruise ships come in.
The only thing lacking at the resort was nightlife. The resort only had 280 people there, so it was not busy. I think it could be more "hopping" if they were at max capacity. The resort only had one late night bar that did not really have a dance floor. However, a taxi into Cozumel for nightlife was cheap - $7. One night the hotel even arranged for taxis (free) for all of us to go into Carolos and Charlies, which was really fund (hotel staff went with us too).
I would definitely stay there again but only for a 3-4 night stay. It is perfect for that. You can get all the nightlift you desire in downtown Cozumel for a cheap taxi ride, so don't let the lack of nightlife at the resort keep you away. It was the perfect place for my friends and I to go to celebrate my 40th birthday!
