My husband and I booked a trip to the Park Royal through Apple Vacations at a very good price, so all in all, we had a great time. However, we felt that this resort is not a 4 star, but more in line with a 3 star resort.

Good:
Activities staff is wonderful. They had lots of stuff going on throughout the day (water basketball, water polo, volleyball, dance lessons, water aerobics etc.). We had a great time participating in the sports activities.

As others have posted, the grounds are beautiful, well maintained and clean. The resort has utilized the space well.

All the bartenders were great! They are very attentive and make great drinks. Try the dirty monkey. Tip to get above the top service.

The free snorkeling was a plus from the resort, but don't expect to see great coral. There are some fish, but that's really it - take a snorkeling trip if you want to see some great coral - I also heard diving is awesome or do the submarine trip if you don't want to get wet.

We thought the snack bars were really good. The hot dogs are very good & hamburgers are ok too. Staff at the snack bars is great. : )

This is a smaller resort and the guests were wonderful! We met so many nice, friendly people - more so than any other place we have stayed.

Average:

The food was just average overall. I have been to many good resorts and travel a lot - nothing special at all about the food. You also had to stand in line for reservations, but we noticed empty tables at all hours - seemed like they were understaffed. The only plus was that I didn't get sick.

Breakfast buffet was really great.
Lunch buffet was average, but not good.
Dinner buffet was terrible.

Mexican - not very good - if you go try the fajitas.
Italian - pretty good if you ordered the right stuff and had very good salads.
Carribean - fish was excellent - top pick!

Night entertainment was probably the weakest that I have ever seen at any resort. They have competitions with guests, which is really fun. The sports bar is open at night, but is really smokey - I would suggest going into town for night life.

Bad:
Front desk staff was rude, but it wasn't too much of a pain as we didn't have to deal with them much. We asked for an ocean view non-smoking room, but didn't get either. We spent very little time there, so it didn't bother us too much. Not everyone can have a great room!

Housekeeping was terrible. We think it was our floor as others had great service (were in the 2200s). Our room didn't get cleaned one day and was cleaned very late & hastily others. This was really surprising as we tipped every day. Some friends we met had towel animals every day - so I guess it just depends on who you get.

Very disappointed in staff one day as our friends lost some money and a guest turned it in. We can only assume that the staff took the money as none of them claimed to have known anything about it. We were very disappointed at the dishonesty, but just take care of your stuff! Use the safe in your room.

We thought it was insane that you had to pay for the safe in the room. We have stayed lots of places, and never had to pay for the safe.

Prices are way over inflated for Mexico. Jewelry was so overpriced that I hardly bought anything. I think you get better deals after the cruise ships leave or on Sundays. There was a jewelry vendor that came into the resort one day and wanted $150 - $200 USD for some necklaces.

Ovreall, it's good for the price - we cannot complain about that. It is a beautiful resort. If they changed some things this would truly be a 4 star, but they have some things to work on.

My good friend and I decided to book this hotel about a month out. We are both 25 and wanted a fun hotel, but not crazy college spring break. This hotel was amazing.
Room- Clean, big, had unrequested balcony, granite bathroom--no complaints
Drinks- Strong if that is how you liked them, international branded liquior, all water purrified
Food- Buffet was alright. Many different choices everyday with different offerings from breakfast to lunch to dinner. Went to the mexican and italian restaurants and loved both. The pizza was very great! Sick with what you like---and you won't be disappointed. You could eat at the restauarants as many times as you liked during your stay there. By all of the pools there is a place with hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, and pizza. Great place to grab something while you are hanging out at the pool.
Pools- There are 3 large ones and two cold hot tubs(you would not need a hot tub there!). One huge one that was very close to the hotel, and two closer to the water. Swim up bars at all of them. The ones closest to the ocean were both infinity pools. There was sandy areas for people who like sitting in the sand and other areas for those people who do not but all very close to eachother.
Entertainment- snorkeling, shows, outdoor bars, a sportsbar, and daily pool activiities, giant cruise ships coming and going. We were able to see a pretty sunset also.
Bottom line is that this place is well worth the money. We never left the hotel the entire 8 days that we were there.

I stayed at the Park Royal from March 11-15 with a group of 8 other people, and this was my first time at an all-inclusive. For $99 per person per night, we got a great deal, and overall, we had a fun time. I won't get into the basic facts about the hotel (number of pools, etc) because I think that information can be easily located, and to make the review a little easier to read I'm going to break it down into the good and bad:
The Good:
1. Grounds and Facilities: The hotel was beautiful, and everything was clean and spacious. Our room had a little balcony overlooking the main pool, which was nice to sit on in the morning.
2. Service: The staff members were attentive, friendly, and accommodating. I would highly recommend bringing some small bills for tipping. In addition to ensuring you even better service, while chatting with one of the bartenders one day, we learned that he earns the equivalent of $6/day through wages(which doesn't go as far as you might think, even in Mexico). Everyone works very hard and definitely deserves anything extra that you tip.
3. Location on the Island: The hotel was a 5-minute cab ride from downtown, so we went there several times to shop, eat, and explore, which was a lot of fun.
4. Something for Everyone: One thing that I noticed is that the Park Royal attracts a wide variety of guests, from retired couples to families to college kids on spring break, and everyone had something to do. My group and I didn't partake of many of the organized activities, although there were plenty of them, preferring to spend most of our time frequenting the swim-up bars and enjoying the sunshine. However, we did snorkel one day, which was very cool. It seems like there's plenty of sightseeing to do around the island as well; if we had a longer trip I would have liked to do more of that.
The Bad:
1. Food: I was very disappointed in the food, particularly from the restaurants other than the buffet. Since we were expected to stand in line to make reservations and conform to a dress code, I was expecting something special. Maybe I'm spoiled by the restaurants in NYC, but I found the Caribbean restaurant terrible and the Italian restaurant mediocre (we didn't try the Mexican restaurant). Even the service failed to impress: our waitress at the Caribbean restaurant got exasperated when we asked what the various dishes on the menu consisted of (I hate to break it to you, but, "Rasta Pasta" is not a widely-known dish) and got several of our group's orders wrong. On our last night, we went into town for dinner at La Mission, which was great, and the front desk was more than happy to provide recommendations if you're interested in other places.
2. Chairs: Obtaining lounge chairs by the pools or on the beach was an ordeal. One day I went down to the beach/pool area at 8:00 am (after getting up at 10:00 am and not finding a seat either of the two previous days) and almost every chair was taken. By "taken," I don't mean "occupied by a human being." Instead, people apparently come down at some ungodly hour and place towels and other belongings on chairs to claim them. They then come back later in the morning/early afternoon, knowing that a chair will be waiting for them, in the meantime having wasted that space by keeping other people from using it. If you want a lounge chair, I strongly suggest getting up early (sometime well before 8:00 am) and "reserving" one. There just weren't enough chairs to go around.
3. A Couple of Nitpicky Things: It wasn't a major problem, but the elevators were somewhat small and slow, so at times it took a while to get up- and downstairs (especially if the cleaning staff was making its rounds, because their carts would take up an entire elevator.) My boyfriend found the beds in the rooms to be very hard, and we had 2 double beds instead of a king or a queen. Also, for some reason, during the breakfast buffet, the omelette station was positioned in the middle of the buffet with self-serve food on either side, making it impossible to tell who was in line for omelettes and who was in line for the other food and causing a huge traffic jam. All of these things are by no means deal-breakers, but were slightly annoying and might be less so if you know to expect them.
4. The Journey: This isn't directly on point regarding the hotel, but I would like to strongly recommend flying into Cozumel versus flying to Cancun and then taking a van, then a ferry, and then a taxi to the hotel. It is more expensive to fly to Cozumel, but particularly depending on your mode of transportation from the Cancun airport to the ferry (there is an inexpensive bus, but we rented a private van so as to get there more quickly) you may not save enough money to make it worth your while, which is how we felt. The trip between Cancun and Cozumel added about 3 hours each way of travel time.

Overall, my friends and I had a fun vacation, and if you're going to Cozumel I would recommend the Park Royal.

My wife and I and another couple atayed at the Park Royal Mar 1 to Mar 6. We were very inpressed by the resort. The grounds and the facilities were very modern and the cleanliness was beyond reproach. We never had a problem getting beach lounges at one of the pools by the beech. The beech is tiny and the bottom very rocky.
Each of the three pools has its own swim up bar which were dlighightful. Although our favorite bar was the one at the bottom of the steps from the lobby. The sports bar, which is open until 2:00AM was neat also.
We had requested rooms in proximity to one another and were inmpressed to fine out that our reservations had been paired and we had adjoining rooms. They were 2512 and 2514. This mean that they were on the 6th floor since Mexicans count the ground floor as 0. The views were fabulous.
We had some minor complaints about the food. Overall the food was above average. We ate in all three ala carte restaurants. The Caribbean was the best. You have to try the Grouper in Coconuts and raisins. The Mexican food was excellent but the service was weak. The Italian was OK.
Breakfasts were great with made to order eggs and many choices. But things were a little strange at times like the butter on the opposite side of the room from the toast. The one dinner we had at the buffet was just OK. If you are travelling with kids be advised that the buffet will be your only choice since they are not allowed in the ala carte restaurants.
The time share people were not a problem.
All in all a great vacation.

We originally booked a week at the Park Royal but after reading all the reviews decided to break up our week between two hotels. We stayed at the Park Royal from 7 - 10 Mar then moved to the Casa Mexicana and stayed there until 13 Mar.

Park Royal experience was a good one. Even tho we got to the hotel around 1:30, we were immediately checked in. I was impressed at the way everyone was so ready to help you. They were very polite and cheerful. The place was beautiful and very nicely landscaped. Our room was on the 7th floor and we had a beautiful view. Everything was very clean and people were constantly cleaning all over the complex. Bed was hard for me but my husband slept like a log with no back or hip pain (which usually plagues him). Breakfast and lunch was great but I'm not impressed with the three formal dining places. They were very nice inside and the food presentation and service was great but food was bland. Also, the hamburgers at the snack bars...not sure what kind of meat they were made of.

Drawbacks - having to walk so far to get coffee in the mornings, not enough chairs around swimming areas, constantly having to avoid the time share people. Timeshare people - they are everywhere...at the airport, downtown, the concierge at the hotel. If you wanted to arrange something outside what the hotel offers, the front desk said you had to talk to the concierge, except that person is a timeshare hound. I personally made up some cards to hand out that basically stated "I am on vacation and am not interested in what you have to sell. Please leave me alone." BTW, these cards were in spanish so there would be no misunderstanding.

Was glad we broke up our stay because after 3 days we were ready to go downtown and see the rest of the island. Which you should not miss. It has some of the most beautiful water. We rented a car and went around the island on a Sunday when there was much less traffic and most of the islanders take the day off and enjoy the day. Loved it.

If you can avoid the timeshare people (just walk past them without making eye contact) then you will have a great time.
