I just came back from Park Royal Cozumel and I must admit I quite enjoyed the experience.
I'm going to break my review out into the good, the neutral, and the bads:
Good
1. Checking in was very efficient. Our flight came in later at night so there were few couples checking in at that hour. We basically just gave them our names and got our room key right away. The bellboy gave us a nice description of the services and amenities on site, and was very helpful in general.
2. We ate at the buffet nearly everyday because there was always a generous selection of food. It was usually a combination of Mexican dishes plus North American dishes. Sometimes they had themed nights like Caribbean nights and what not. Best of all, the food wasn't too salty so it suited our palettes very well. If anything, it was more the vacationers that bugged us a bit. Some people were sort of pushy and cut in front of lines. Let's be friendly here, we're all trying to have a wonderful time. (It definitely is important to keep an open mind and try out other foods; you will be a lot happier that way.)
3. Rooms were clean and well-lit. We had an abundance of towels and hot water was always available. Housekeeping came around 9am in the morning (we were on the first floor), and if asked them to return later, they normally showed up again around 3:30pm. I think they run two shifts for housekeeping.
4. I liked the freeform pool the best (in the middle of the resort). Although the pool wasn't heated, your body does adjust to the temperature not too long after. It was great as there were lots of pool activities as well, including aqua-aerobics and salsa dancing (pool side).
5. The service was excellent. They were friendly and helpful, and always asked you if you wanted something from the bar. The hostesses were very friendly as well. The buffet had the greatest service by far.
6. The bars were also excellent. I believe they opened at 11am, which was fine for us (since we didn't really need to start drinking any earlier than 11am). They were very wrist-friendly and were great for recommendations. Try out the "albina-lai" (or something sounding like that) at the Chac-mool bar. Loreto, the bartender, makes it the best (just tell him it's the green drink with like rum and pineapple juice).
Neutral
1. We paid $2 USD each day to use the in-room safe. We were ok with that because the $14 USD we spent (we stayed for 1-week) bought us a peace of mind everyday as we had some pretty pricey equipment with us. (According to their in-room guides they offer guests free use of the front desk safes.)
2. There is no in-room fridge and you have to purchase your own bottled waters. Although once you have purchased a bottle of water you can always refill it at the many spots on the resort free of charge. We hung out at the resort most of the time anyway so we had no problem getting water. At one or two of the bars they actually had a water cooler, so we didn't even have to wait for the bartender.
3. We ate at each of the three a la carte restaurants once. We found the service and the food at Caribenos the best. Our server was very attentive and made sure we were comfortable at all times. We felt a little neglected at the other two restaurants, but we figured we were on vacation and didn't want that to ruin our trip. In fact, we checked into the buffet restaurant after one of our meals to get some desserts. It was awesome!
4. You have to pay to use the gym at the resort. I believe it was $5 per visit per person. We were a little disappointed at first, but we found other ways to exercise (e.g. swimming, walking to downtown, etc).
5. Downtown is about a 15-minute drive away from the resort. It should only cost you $4 USD each way, just be sure to establish the price before hopping onto a cab. Like I said, if you feel like getting some form of exercise, walking to downtown is a great way of doing it.
6. There were some Royal resort representatives around the resort trying to do some timesharing presentations. We basically told them we weren't interested and they left us alone. Any other time thereafter they just greeted us with their friendly smiles. No biggie. If you do attend, I believe you get a free jeep rental for the day or something like that.
Bad
1. It was difficult to find a spot on the beach as it was a smaller private alcove. We are strong believers in sharing but we didn’t observe this at the beach. Some vacationers claimed the chairs early in the morning and occupied them until the beach closed. Unfortunately this meant other vacationers couldn't enjoy the beach, or you can choose to wake up at 6am in the morning and claim your territory.
To be honest, we didn't have a lot of bad things to say about this place. Considering the price we paid for our vacations, we felt it was definitely worth the value we paid. Like I said, just remember you're on vacation, so there's no need to rush around for things. Keep an open mind in terms of trying out new foods, and your stomach will be much fuller.
In the end, you're the one who knows what you want in a vacation. So if what I've described above doesn't suit your needs, then this place may not be your ideal vacation spot.
Wherever you end up, go and enjoy yourself!
Tips
1. Bring insect repellent and some ointments with you. Yes, guess what, there are mosquitoes there!
2. Put suntan lotion on even if it looks cloudy. The sun will get to you somehow. Trust me (especially if you plan to stay outside all the time).
